What's so cool about 101 Dalmatians?
The platinum label is not a label for the greatest movies but a sales trick from Disney to sell their movies. Nothing more and nothing less.
If they thought that Basil Mouse would sell of the rack with a platinum release then they would release it as a platinum edition.

101 Dalmatians is great because:
- it has a great story (dogs)
- funny characters (dogs and humans)
- great animation style (stylization and caricatures/Layout and Art Direction)
- it´s the london swinging 60s (for the retro fans)
- Cruella de Vil (one of the most colorful villainesses of all time - even the name is stylish "Cruel" "Devil"...)
- great opening sequence (humorous and imaginative)
- xerox process that allows to animate 101 characters at all (today we often forget that to animate 101 spotty dogs isn´t that easy...)
Chuck Jones gave disney his compliment: "Of course. Only the Disney studio think of doing a hundred and one spotted dogs. We have trouble doing one spotted dog." (from Leonard Malting "The Disney Films")
personally I love the animation style (this is animation art at its best), the caricatures and that touch of irony, the warm and charming story/characters. It´s unique...

I know this is kind of off-topic, but when speaking of Cruella as one of the meanest disney villains I always wonder why she has so much luck at the end of the film (I mean the original animated feature, not any sequels/live action films)... she doesn´t get killed, she doesn´t even go to prison. I mean after all she tried to kill the puppies... with her on the loose no dog-fancier can feel good.

"101 Dalmatians" most DEFINITELY deserves the PE treatment! It's got a terrific story, wonderful characters, animation innovations that are still in use today and one of the NASTIEST, most utterly VILE of all the Disney Villans, Cruella! One of the things that I like most about the film is that they did a very nice job of adhering to the book it was based on by Dodie Smith, right down to the black and white twotone of Cruella's hair! I just wish they could've utilized the sequel she wrote " The Twilight Bark" for the sequel to the movie.....it would've been infinitely more entertaining!

I find it weird that it gets a PE because it's just different from all other PEs. Most of them involve royalty, and I think at least this generation recognizes princess/prince movies the most. Come to think of it, all PEs currently released involve royalty.
Snow White's a princess.
Beast is a prince and lives in a huge castle.
Lion King - look at the title
Jasmine is a princess, Aladdin becomes one temporarily
I don't remember Bambi, but he is called a little prince, right???
....
Sleeping Beauty isn't a PE, but close... and we know it's all royalty there
Cinderella becomes a princess, right?
Little Mermaid... Ariel's a princess...
We're surrounded by royalty!!!
