If I remember correctly, I think it actually became the highest grossing animated film up until that point. (Of course Little Mermaid would knock it down a year later

)

I'm glad I'm getting positive feedback on the movie as that makes me want to revisit it even more. It scored a sadly very low 50% on Rottentomatoes.com, so that put me off a bit, but since you're all not 80 year old philosophy professors, I'll take your word.

Oliver is one of my favorite Disney movies for one reason, It's what got me started in the whole love of Disney thing. When I saw it in the theater I fell in love. I started collecting the McDonalds toys, the soundtrack, the stuffed animals from Sears (pre Disney Store) and any coloring book I could find. I loved the music: Billy Joel, Huey Lewis, Bette Midler, Ruth Pointer, What's not to love. It was the 80's after all and they were all very big names.

*FACT for those of you who don't know, Oliver was voiced by a young Joey Lawrence before his "Blossom" Days, and Tito was voiced by Cheech Marin.

It was also Eisner’s first film in which he wanted to bring back Disney Musicals. It was because of Oliver's success that the studio was able to continue this tradition with the Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast. It was really a movie that was a stepping stone to what became the rebirth of Disney animation in the 90's.

I've saw Oliver and Company when it was new in the theaters and I enjoyed it. I'm a Billy Joel fan and he wrote the songs for it and does the Voice for Dodger.

One thing to remember about this film is that before Lion King was the highest grossing animated film, there was Beauty and the Beast. Before that was The Little Mermaid. And before that, the highest grossing Animated film was Oliver and Company. It was a huge hit and one of the first steps on the way to the rebirth of animation at Disney. I think that makes it an important movie because it was an important milestone.

The story is good, but if you're a big fan of Dicken's Oliver, there are only general plot similarities, this is definitely a retelling -- Disney-style.

Some voice talent in addition to Joel are: Dom DeLouis, June Pointer, Bette Midler, Cheech Marin.

I think it's worth it, but I think that before I will buy it, I'll wait to see if it goes platinum. It should.

Well i was currently on a dvd price check site when reading this so for anyone interested i did a lil search for the cheapest place too get it (region 2).

Finger puppets? oh yeah, I remember when Oliver and CO first came out.. and I wanted to the see the movie so badly.. but my mom couldn't take me..

then I saw one of the finger puppets (loose)( it was Oliver ) at a Fred Meyer store.. mad me so sad because I wanted to see the movie so bad.. I didn't take the puppet home with me though.. but I found one like it a few years ago..*so happy*

I also have a couple dodger figures, and a Rita pin as well, too bad O&C didn't have as much merchandise as the more recent Disney films

... funny thing is..I never heard of any other Disney films in the 80's besides Oliver and Company and of course TLM.. I was only 3 when Fox and the Hound came out.. but I heard it was re-released in theaters in 89, Black Cauldron we know was a box office dissapointment so there wasn't much advertising there .. and I'm baffled about the great mouse detective.. I don't remember any advertisments for that.. granted I was 8 but still...

Well I watched Oliver and company tonight and I had completely forgotten that when I was little my parents took me to see it

and I was watching and thought it was so wonderful and fun. its highly underrated I want to go get the special edition of the dvd tomorrow since is probably no chance of it getting the 2 disc treatment right? well what did you guys think of it

I haven't seen it in a while. But I remember loving this movie. My favorite characters were Dodger and Oliver. All in all a great movie.

It truly is a great movie and it really has a great 80s vibe to it

Oh yea another one of my favs! Theyre all my favorite! lol.. but really though this is a great 80s disney movie.. I really love the soundtrack and OMG cheeche marin doing the voice of a chiuaha (how ever you spell it) is comedy and a half! Perfect choice for his voice.

I, too, was pleasantly suprised with Oliver and Company. I really love that movie, and am surprised that I had heard next to nothing about it before my viewing. The music is fun, the story is great, and the artistic style is so well chosen.

I haven't watched this movie in ages, but I do remember liking it as a kid my favorite character was that Dog Oliver first follows before meeting all the other dogs, I can't remember his name

I saw Oliver and Comapany when it was first in theaters(I was 9 then),and I enjoyed it alot.I still love the songs (my faves are "Why Should I Worry?" and "Good Company"),and the characters are great.I'm especially fond of Oliver,because I love cats.

Its nothing spectacular but it certainly is above average and way better than some of the dregs that preceded it(Black Cauldron/Rescuers/Fox and the Hound). The treatment of the story wasn't the best, a little too suggary for Dickens. And the voicing of Oliver was pretty bad. The music was very good though and some of the other voicing was good.

It was in 88, so you might have been a bit older...
