remakes may suck.. but I just found out Alan Menken is doing the score for this. Let's hope he'll do more Disney films soon..
now sure you can say "didn't he recently do Home on the Range?" well yeah sure, but he was signed on to the project back in 1998 and wrote most of the songs for that back in 1999. (how funny an actual trainwreck was featured in the movie
) So that doesn't rally count. I also hope "Enchanted" is still on tracks. Eventhough its storyline is starting to sound an awful lot like Rapunzel Unbraided.
Anyway, great he's doing Shaggy Dog, I wonder how an Alan Menken score with no songs sounds like. I don't think he's ever scored a non-musical movie.

By the way, the original "Shaggy Dog" was made back in 1959 with Fred MacMurray (of "My Three Sons"), Annette Funicello and Tommy Kirk. It was a great film. The 1976 remake of "The Shaggy D.A." stars Dean Jones, Keenan Wynn, Tim Conway (Carol Burnett's sidekick) and Jo Anne Worley. In 1987, "The Return of the Shaggy Dog" that I've never saw it before and the 1994 TV remake with Scott Weinger (from "Full House" and "Aladdin"), Ed Begley Jr.) and Jordan Blake Warkol. That one I've never saw it too. The 2006 theatrical remake with Tim Allen. That I've never heard of that one. I might going to see the remake. It was great. The original was way better.

MusicRadio77 you have again mispoke. "The Shaggy D.A." is not a remake. It was the follow-up or sequel to "The Shaggy Dog".
This new version looks to be really bad. Why can't they leave good enough alone and not have to add all the toilet humor. I can't believe that it isn't getting an R rating for all the sexual innuendo and toilet humor. I will avoid this film and any sequels that may follow. I hear they are already saying that there will be a "Shaggy Dog 2" next year. I hope not!!!!
Remakes and direct-to-video releases should all be avoided like a kiss from your Great Aunt Matilda!!

Eh, I just ignore it these days unless it's something that should really really be corrected (such as calling The Shaggy DA a remake).dvdjunkie wrote:MusicRadio77 you have again mispoke.

The film looks interesting, but not interesting enough for me to catch in the theater. I'll stick to buying the original next week...

I took my kids to see it yesterday.
It was better than I expected. There were a few BIG laughs that weren't included in the sneak peeks or trailers. Tim Allen did a great job. My kids loved it. I would rate it a B. I didn't think I wasted my money seeing it in the theater. I was disappointed that it wasn't #1 this weekend.
By the way, I watched the original Shaggy Dog and the Shaggy D.A. with my kids before we went to see the 2006 version. Afterwards, I asked my kids which one they liked the best, and all of them but one said the one in the theater. One of my kids said he liked the original and the new version the same.

I, for one, will not subject any of my grandkids to this crappy movie. I decided that I wanted to go to see it and see if it was worth anything and I was right, it wasn't.
They took a very wholesome family movie, and ruined it. Why couldn't they just update the story a little bit, and instead of the Fred MacMurray role of father, they turned it into a 'toilet-humor-filled' movie that Disney should be ashamed of foisting on the movie-going public. Sure, there are some laughs, Tim Allen sometimes is just funny being on the screen, but to make him the Shaggy Dog and not one of his kids is really wrong. I thought the scene with him running over the little old lady with the grocery cart to be very offensive and not needed. Sure it was done for laughs, but surely they could have come up with something else rather than knocking her around like that.
Why can't they leave the classics alone? "The Shaggy Dog" was one of the funnier movies that the Disney studio made back in the 50's and 60's. I know that there is a new generation of movie-goers, but c'mon, let's get some originality going and start making family movies that don't rely on gross-out toilet-humor to make a person laugh.
I consider the $5 I paid for this movie a waste of money and I will not be adding this film to my DVD collection when it comes to DVD.
Again I emphasize, "Remakes SUCK!!!!!". They should be avoided like a kiss from your Aunt Matilda. And it not just Disney remakes that are terrible, but in the past years there have been a slew of 'junk' remakes - "The Longest Yard", "Texas Chainsaw Massacre", and more recently "The Hills Have Eyes" come to mind immediately as just pure garbage. And they wonder why attendance at the theaters is falling off? It is not just the prices at the box office and snack bar folks, it is the quality of entertainment that is being offered.
I apologize in advance for the rant.

I don't remember that much toilet-humor in this movie, but what there was made sense because that's what dogs are all about. It was a movie about a man that turned into a dog - some toilet humor fits in nicely for laughs.dvdjunkie wrote:that don't rely on gross-out toilet-humor to make a person laugh
Come on - Did you really think the movie was THAT bad? I think you are seeing the movie through the eyes of an adult and not a child. This movie was obviously aimed at younger children, and it succeeded there. I'll admit, this isn't the best movie I've seen this year...but my kids LOVED it and I would never say I felt I wasted my money seeing this movie. It was a Tim Allen comedy - funny stuff.dvdjunkie wrote:I consider the $5 I paid for this movie a waste of money
Also, I must add that this movie creatively took the original idea and made a whole new movie. It was not a re-make by any means - the entire plot was completely different. I think, even if you don't want to see it in the theater, you should at least rent it to give it a try.

Why would a caring parent subject their child to a movie such as this? The humor is definitely not 'aimed at kids' for the most part. Some of the slapstick things are really truly funny, but as a whole, I think that if I were raising my kids all over again, this is one movie that I wouldn't let them see.
Why do you think it has a PG rating? If you read the ratings guide this is for children with Parent Guidance, and if you read further, it says PG rated for Rude Humor and Adult situations. This is not for a child below the age of 10 or 11. If it was meant for younger kids it would have been rated G.

Give me an example of something so terrible in this movie that you really wouldn't let your kids watch it? All Tim Allen was doing in this movie was acting like a dog does.
Really - I understand you don't like remakes, but I really didn't find anything inappropriate in this movie. I'm afraid you went into the movie biased against it because of your dislike of remade movies (this is based on reading your previous posts before the movie was released into theaters), and now are trying to dissuade people from seeing it based on that alone.
I guess bottom line is I disagree with your opinion of this movie, and hope that people reading this thread give it a fair chance and form their own opinions about it.

I seen the Shaggy Dog (2006) remake and thought it was okay it wasn't like Tim Allen best acting movie but it was average.
I guess I gave it a higher score because I'm a Home Improvement fan.
Score 8/10

Well I finally saw this tonight on DVD (it came out a week earlier in the UK). I wasn't expecting much, and I didn't really get much. Tim Allen was OK, but nothing more.
Random thoughts:
Is this the first Disney branded film with a scene in a gentlemen's washroom and with shots of people using urinals?
Robert Downey Jnr was the best thing in the film. Shame he didn't get a bigger part. But what were Disney thinking when he was hired. ("Well, we've had trouble with Lindsay Lohan disrupting filming schedules because she parties all night. Let's get Downey Jnr. in and see if we can make a schedule go to hell in a handbasket?").
I thought the idea of genetic experiments was a good modernisation and backbone for the film. But they never really went far enough with the idea. Like a lot of films these days, it just seemed to potter about and be about nothing... at least nothing 20,000 other films aren't already about. Did we really need another overworked father story? Robert Downey Jnr.'s character should have been more evil too.
Excellently trained Dog. Although I found myself rapidly boring of the story, it was worth seeing the film throughout just to see the dog tricks.
