Really the only things I liked about Brave were Elinor and Fergus (although you rarely got to see them interact), the Witch (one scene), and the Will-o-the-Wisp / Mordu. All the stuff that actually filled the runtime--buddy roadtrip bear nonsense, the men, Merida and her horrid design--are hard to get through. Although this film is a good reminder that not only films with Black characters featured dumb transformations where you don't see a character's human self most of the film.

I personally think TR being "about" periods isn't true. I think the mother does bring up periods at one point as a funny gag / allusion, but the red panda represents really the same thing menstruation signals--change, maturity, growing up, interest in romance, rebellion, etc. I feel like that's one of those things where talk around a film overtakes the actual film because it really does not talk about periods or even mention it much at all?

I am curious how Turning Red has done on streaming, if they consider it to have performed well (or consider it to still be performing well compared to other old films) like with Raya? While I feel like Raya would be the better film to gamble on as far as those films hit by the pandemic that live in a sort of grey zone getting a sequel, I could see Turning Red potentially having a sequel, too. But it would really only be interesting if they were to jump forward to teen years, for example. And going by how I had hoped for a jump forward for Incredibles 2 and the actual thing started almost literally the moment where the first ended, I'm not sure I'd want a sequel that was them at the same age and time as the first film. Not sure what new story they could tell there.

So the metaphor doesn’t really make sense. That was my point. And yeah, it is more about the sexuality and rebellion that come with the time girls get periods, true. I dunno the movie just plain did not interest me and I hardly remember how it went.

Honestly Disney and Pixar haven’t made much good movies lately. I think the last thing I thought was good was Inside Out 2.
