You'll never escape the soaps, little brother! They're all around you!!!
Anyways, for anyone interested in soap opera trivia:
(The) Guiding Light: January 25, 1937 to Present
- Premiered on Television June 30, 1952, replacing a serial called "The First Hundred Years" and was Number 1 in the ratings from 1956-1958. The radio production ended in 1956
- Dropped the "The" from its title in 1977
As the World Turns: April 2, 1956 to Present
- Dethroned The Guiding Light in 1958 as Number 1 serial. Held that position until 1978, when it was overtaken by All My Children.
- The only original castmember left, Nancy Hughes (played by Helen Wagner) was originally fired 13 weeks later because the creator (and headwriter) didn't like how she poured coffee, among other things.
General Hospital: April 1, 1963 to Present
- The largest audience ever for a soap was its November 16-17, 1981 wedding of Luke and Laura, with Elizabeth Taylor guest-starring as Helena Cassadine.
- Held the Number 1 spot from 1979 to 1987, having dethroned All My Children, and being dethroned by The Young and the Restless.
Days of our Lives: November 8, 1965 to Present
- The first soap that featured a "possession" storyline since Dark Shadows (1966-1971). It propelled them to Number 2 in 1995. Despite having fallen since then (was at near-cancellation last year at this time, when it was at #7), it unfortunately is back at Number 2.
- Killed off 9 veterans and 1 young character in their Serial Killer storyline. Among those killed: original castmember Frances Reid, 30 year vet Suzanne Rogers, 23 year vet James Reynolds, and 20 year vet Peggy McKay. James Reynolds' character, Abe Carver, was the longest running male black character on television.
One Life to Live: July 15, 1968 to Present
- Original title was "Between Heaven And Hell", but creator Agnes Nixon was asked to change it to something less...intense, at the last minute.
- Featured an early crossover, probably daytime's first, when Dr. Steve Hardy of General Hospital went to One Life to Live to treat Meredith Lord.
All My Children: January 5, 1970 to Present
- Hailed as the first socially-relevant soap, it was the second sole creation by Agnes Nixon.
- Yes, this is the one with THE diva of Daytime, Erica Kane Martin Brent Cudahy Chandler Roy Roy (neither Roys were legal) Montgomery Montgomery Chandler Marick Marick, as played by the wonderful Susan Lucci.
The Young and the Restless: March 26, 1973 to Present
- Currently the Number 1 daytime serial, holding the spot since 1987.
- The first line on the show was spoken by Sally McGuire: "Kind of a drag, isn't it, stuck in a place like Genoa City. God I feel so restless."
The Bold and the Beautiful: March 23, 1987 to Present
- Considered a "sister" show to Y&R since they both were created by Bill Bell, and have had several crossover characters, such as Sheila Carter, Lauren Fenmore, Scott Grainger, Victor Newman, and Brooke Logan.
- Set against the fashion industry, B&B is one of the most popular American soap operas that aired overseas. Others include the canceled Santa Barbara (1984-1993), and Sunset Beach (1997-1999)
Passions: July 5, 1999 to Present
- The newest soap, created by James E. Reilly, who penned the possession storyline on Days, and is now writing the serial killer storyline as well.
- I don't like it.
