Here are the six
Kill Bill regular release
Kill Bill 2 regular release
Kill Bill special edition - superbit
Kill Bill 2 special edition - superbit
Kill Bill/Kill Bill 2 2 pack
Included in complete works of Quenten Tarrantino.
So each movie has 4 treatments and none of them will be exactly the same for content.
Mickey Mouse in Living Color Volume 1.....Help!
There's no "con trick" been done over the Lord of the Rings releases. New Line were very upfront about the Extended editions being released later, plus none of the content from the Theatrical releases has been duplicated on the Extended Edition sets.Of course a bunch of us got sucked in by the first Lord of the Rings. It was a special enough movie that I did repurchase it.
Plus it's the only way to get the theatrical releases of the films (which are important in my book - and I do actually prefer the theatrical release of Fellowship over the extended edition). I'd support double dipping on any film if it means the theatrical version is made available. Anyone who thinks the theatrical release of a movie is irrelevent needs to read up on Universal's original Phantom of the Opera release to see why theatrical edits of movies need to be kept and readily made available.
Just look at each LOTR release being a super 6 disc set.
As for Kill Bill, I don't think you can count box sets as seperate releases. I assume both the 2 pack and the QT Box will contain the same discs as one of the previous releases. After all, is Warner double dipping on their Warner Legends releases by releasing a box set? Is Warner double dipping on their Marx Bros releases by releasing a boxset as well as the individual releases? Or Universal with their Monster Legacy sets and gift set?
So really each Kill Bill volume will only get two releases - the regular and the special edition. It's not too bad, and certainly not unexpected. And everyone and their dog must have been expecting a box set of the two movies at the appropriate time.
Part of the problem with double dipping is people want their DVDs as soon as possible. In today's instant gratification society nobody has the patience to wait for anything. I remember the fuss caused on several DVD forums when people found out the Japanese release of X2 was to be released two months before the US release. Everyone was demanding a US release at the same time. Of course, when I pointed out the Japanese release was a single disc with almost no supplements other than trailers, everybody ignored me. Everybody. All they saw was Japan was getting something first and they were complaining that they weren't.
You cannot have definitive DVD releases if they have to be released within 10-15 weeks of the movie's premiere. It stands to reason.
Now, to get back onto topic, there's nothing wrong with Disney releasing the Treasures again in an unlimited format. Firstly, It's not as if the limited edition tins were sold at that high a premium in the first place. Take a look at some of the margins charged for collectable Laserdisc releases over the standard releases to see what Disney could have charged.
Secondly, any Ebay watchers will see that demand for these titles (the high profile ones in particular) vastly outstrips the supply. Rereleasing in an unlimited format enables the collectability of the original releases to be maintained, while allowing anyone who wants a copy to have access to them. Only the selfish would want to see no re-release.

Well back when Fellowship came out I was new to DVD and not nearly sofisticated enough to look at press releases and release schedules to know the studio. In fact, I think the unsophisticated purchaser would be in a rather large majority.
As for the Kill Bill sets, I believe it is Mirimax that has said the content for all four versions will be different. They went as far as to say that Quentin Tarantino fans are extremely loyal and want everything and they are banking on his fans buying every version so they can be completists.
In my mind that is horrible and a total rip off. I believe the title of the article was DVDs are ripping you off - pretty high handed for a pro DVD site.

This is getting way off-topic, but correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't the original R1 Fellowship of the Ring have a sticker on the packaging advertising the upcoming Extended Edition? I seem to remember a promo or something telling you that you could save money when you bought both. But I could be wrong.
I personally don't see anything at all wrong with the LOTR releases - foreknowledge or not. Quite simply each release is a totally different product.
To bring this back onto topic, the issues I do have problems with are releases like Disney's Lilo and Stitch where they had the materials for the 2 disc set ready, but held off only to release it later. I also have issues with Disney's release of Alice in Wonderland as we know lots of material was missing from the LD release. Its obvious these will appear on a later release at some point.
Double dipping is not an automatic evil - it can be justified and can be done carefully, but most often or not it is done out of greed. While sometimes this is greed on the studios part (Lilo and Stitch, Kill Bill Vol 1 - which was obviously released only to hype the second volume at the theater) it can also be caused by the greed of the public who want everything NOW! NOW! NOW! and are not prepeared to wait for a quality product.

2099net - this is my last comment on the issue cause we are way off topic.
You are right about the consumer greed and not being patient. I myslef have been to blame on that one. A lot on this forum are look at threads like Home on the Range and Cinderella where members are demanding their DVDs right now instead of demanding a quality product.
As for Lord of the Rings - you may well have been right about the sticker and it certainly is not the worst example. The four disk sets included so much it was worth the extra purchase.
However, for Kill Bill it sounds like they are going to add some extra outtakes and maybe a commentary, throw it in a two pack and hope the completists want all four versions. That is really sleazy to me.

Kill Bill has been a total rip job from the beginning. They intentionally created two movies out of one, just to rip you off, so of course they're doing the same thing on DVD.
I didn't go to the theatre to see it, in protest of their sleaze tactics, I doubt I'll even rent them when they're finally released.
Interesting to see the rumours of re-releases for the Treasures. I missed Silly Symphonies and Goofy, and it'd be nice to fill in the collection. With a tin would be nice, even if it's not numbered, so they don't look out of place.
