Emmy winner and Oscar nominee Colman Domingo and “Slave Play” director Robert O’Hara are in talks to write a live-action film about Princess Tiana from Disney’s “The Princess and the Frog.”
Looks like the Moana flop isn't going to deter Disney from mining their more recent works for live-action adaptations. I'm guessing that this is going to be used to salvage ideas from the abandoned tv series.
This is actually more on target for what I would have liked to have seen from these live-action "reimaginings" of animated Disney pics. We already have a "The Jungle Book" film and it's already perfect. I would have much rather seen like an original musical spin-off centering on Baloo or something. (I guess on paper, that means I would have rather taken the Mufasa origin story than the 2019 photocopy which ... I suppose is also how they stack in my final ranking anyway?)
Well, this is just stupid and a guaranteed flop. People would only be interested in a sequel if it was animated.
A shame because I'd been wanting them to do a remake of the original, this one's inevitable massive floppage will guarantee a TP&TF remake won't happen as a result. A film with Lupita Nyong'o as Tiana opposite Colman Domingo as Facilier would've been so good, too. Only other real question mark would be who could play Naveen well.

Hot off of notching two Emmy noms this year, we hear that Colman Domingo is looking to co-write an original live-action feature about Princess Tiana inspired by Disney‘s animated 2009 feature The Princess and the Frog. We understand, per sources, that the two-time Oscar nominee will co-pen the feature with 2020 Tony-nominated Slave Play director Robert O’Hara. It’s still early days on the project, particularly as far as deals go. We hear that Domingo and O’Hara’s take is being billed as a spinoff of the animated feature rather than a full-on adaptation, a la Disney’s live-action Beauty and the Beast project that’s in the works, Gaston.
Q: We hear you’re looking to co-write a live-action film about Princess Tiana from The Princess and the Frog. What do you love about this story?
Colman Domingo: I just love that it’s the first princess story centered on a young woman who just wanted to have her own business, and it wasn’t associated with any man or anything like that. One of my comrades, Robert O’Hara, was seeking to develop a piece that is based on the film, but it really is about looking at the family and tying everyone in together—all the magic and the spiritual nature of New Orleans and Mardi Gras, and centering all these characters that we’ve loved from the film, and putting them into this live-action film that is grounded and has humor and heart. We haven’t even put pen to paper, but we’re thinking and gestating on "What could that be?" You know? So, we’ll see.
I’ll be honest, I’m a bit annoyed they decided to make a live action spinoff (not remake). Like, why would you do it in live action instead of it being animated? It doesn’t make sense.
Just speculating ... but a LA spin-off allows them to cash in on the brand just the same as a traditional remake. But premiering a whole new story gives them an off-ramp to avoid some of the more tempestuous story choices that plagued the animated film. We probably won't see Tiana spend 60% of her screentime as a frog this time around, I'd imagine.
Still wanting confirmation on whether this is a musical, and who would be providing the music.
I'd gun for Menken, which is who they should have gotten for the animated film anyways. But I wouldn't say no to Miranda, Pasek & Paul, or the Lopezes.
