Just rewatched it without the nighttime red light filter, and the transformation really is not creepy.

Fans of the books who posted on YouTube are not happy with the trailer...!

An industry analysts posits that if Artemis Fowl flops, it will be the last Disney-branded, original, live-action feature we see in theaters.
If Artemis Fowl stumbles or tanks, it may be the last time that Disney offers an even remotely "small" (or mid-budget) movie in theaters as opposed to their Disney+ streaming service. The streaming outlet will already feature a handful of "smaller" movies (Lady and the Tramp, Adam Devine's Magic Castle and Anna Kendrick's Noelle) that will debut on the site, and they seem to be the kinds of flicks that are struggling against the big-scale event movies. If Artemis Fowl, starring Ferdia Shaw as a 12-year-old criminal mastermind in a world where fairies exist, stumbles, it'll both condemn the next such projects to streaming and again show that Walt Disney still has a 15-year-Achilles Heel when it comes to crafting new live-action franchises for theaters.

We know Avengers 4, Frozen 2, Captain Marvel, Toy Story 4 and Star Wars 9 are going to make an unholy amount of money. But those films are arguably about the pay-off from the hard work (in terms of development, marketing and distribution) that went into cultivating the post-Avengers MCU, the new Star Wars universe and not giving up on female-led animated fairy tales. The Lion King, Aladdin and Dumbo are about the past-tense glories paying off. Artemis Fowl is about whether or not Disney has a theatrical future beyond reappropriating our collective childhoods. If not (give or take if they end up with JJ Abrams' Bad Robot), then it'll just be an endless cycle of Avengers movies, Pixar sequels, Pirates of the Caribbean reboots and Lucasfilm redos.

I guess they'll go the way of hand-drawn animation at Disney--at least for the most part.

It's not a big loss, to be honest. They'll still make them for their streaming service.

The film has been pushed back to May 29, 2020. They're just prolonging the inevitable.

The only thing i can see going for it is that Disney doesn't really have any big releases set for 2020.

I wonder if the special FX/CGI needed more time? Or if they're doing reshoots & needed more time? If it'll strengthen the movie, then it's smart of them to take the extra time. I guess they had no time-sensitive promotional tie-ins, like Happy Meals or ads on cookie bags or anything...?

The funny thing is that Kenneth Branagh was originally going to jump immediately from "Artemis Fowl" to directing "Death on the Nile" and both were going to open this year. However, they probably needed more time on the "Death on the Nile" script and maybe Branagh needed more prep time, so Fox moved its release date to 2020.

With "Artemis Fowl" getting moved to next May, it looks like we will be seeing both Branagh films the same year, after all.

I'm not surprised. The fact there was no mention of the film at the D23 Expo was a dead giveaway that Disney doesn't have faith in it and expects it to bomb.

Hmmmm... Then continue to rewrite/reshoot it? Obviously that will cost even more money... Are they really going to release a sub-par product? And theatrically? Unless it's in the contract, maybe just release it to Disney+, but even then, releasing any sub-par movie can hurt Disney... RIP original live action Disney fantasy films not part of a franchise. I have been in the minority, but I have enjoyed them. :(

(Or must they release it theatrically to financially write it off?)

So when will it be announced that this is going straight to Disney+?

I read the book and even the book just was so so. If they want blockbusters, YA fiction seems to be a fairly empty well. Few successful series translate to successful movies (look at Percy Jackson).

Artemis Fowl is trending on Twitter, but for all the wrong reasons. Fans of the book series are livid that Disney has turned the anti-hero, borderline-villainous protagonist into a regular good kid who wants to save the world. Watching the trailer, it reminded me a lot of Wrinkle in Time. That was another recent fantasy movie about a young genius who steps into a weird, magical world in order to save their father.

I think this trailer looks better than the teaser (duh, that's the point). I'm remaining cautiously optimistic about this...

I liked this trailer more than the teaser. The story looks more interesting to me now. But the main character sounds more original in the books, it's a shame Disney has transformed him into the typical hero. Curiously, I think the actor they've chosen looks more like an anti-hero. I didn't know Josh Gad was also in the movie. And this is the third time Colin Farrell plays the father of the protagonist in a Disney movie after Saving Mr. Banks and Dumbo.
