I wouldn't use that as an argument considering RotG is more an exception for Dreamworks. I think Disney has avoided going head-to-head with Dreamworks so far, but now they've finally killed 2D and are now focusing on 3D fullsteam (what's in vogue), they probably feel more confident taking them on.
Turbo has to deal with Monsters University, Despicable Me 2, The Smurfs 2 and Planes. When so many family pictures are released so close together, one or two are bound to fall by the wayside and I'm afraid Turbo will be that one later in the summer.
I think Monsters University and/or especially Planes could fill the other slot (or both).

Speaking of Dreamworks Turbo: Turbo the film bows July 19. The series, Turbo: F.A.S.T., is set for Netflix release in December.
Seems like Dreamworks Animation is ALL in on this film.
And speaking of Rise of the Guardians, I found this info on TAG: Mr. Katzenberg cited the surprisingly strong home video performance of "Rise of the Guardians," which was a box-office disappointment in theaters last November. The movie has sold 3.2 million copies on DVD and Blu-ray, well ahead of DreamWorks' prior expectations. ...

I've noticed the films that do badly in theaters usually do well on home release, because the same occurred with TP&TF. Families probably choose one of the films out at the time to see in theaters together, but buy most of the movies when they're on DVD/Blu-Ray.

"The Pixar and Disney brands speak for themselves," Disney head of distribution Dave Hollis told TheWrap Wednesday, "and we think Monsters University is going to continue that tradition of success."
Brave and Toy Story 3 are among the Pixar movies that have taken off following June debuts, and with Wednesday’s announcement, Disney has ensured it will release projects from the studio during that month for the next five years. Similarly, it will release a Disney Animation title during in November through 2018. The strategy has worked with recent hits Tangled and Wreck-It Ralph, and the studio has set Frozen for Nov. 27 this year.
"It’s an alternating strategy," Hollis said. "We want parents to be able to set their clocks by us."
Another prime candidate would be Ron & John's new film. If it's ready, it could be the later 2016 film, but as of now it's more likely to be the first 2018 release. Their new film is of the Polynesian persuasion shall we say. And it could turn out to be the duos first computer animated film. It's not in concrete now, so don't everyone get upset.
I don't know why anyone would expect it to be 2D.

I'm happy with that early summary, sounds like we have a diverse slate of films to look forward to in the coming years. I'm wondering whether Dean Wellins' project is tied to another obscure Marvel property like Big Hero 6 or whether it's something original that taps into genres like superhero or sci-fi that would carry some specific appeal to the male demographic so I'm looking forward to hearing more about that. Glad to hear that there is at least some testing of a hybrid medium like the Paperman technique being carried out in the development for Clements and Musker's film, the Polynesian theme is something I'm definitely interested in. It will also be interesting to see the different point of view from which Byron Howard's story will be told, hopefully it will be something original and different to the animal-centric stories we've gotten in the past.
It looks like the Lasseter/Katzenberg rift is still going strong. I wouldn't be surprised if the decision to release Planes theatrically was partially based on wanting to hurt DreamWork's similarly-themed Turbo.
For the past handful of years, there have been no more than four or five studio animated films a year, plus a handful of indie titles. There are eight releases this year and 10 next year. This has sparked a fierce battle for prime release dates between Disney and Pixar on the one side, and DreamWorks Animation and 20th Century Fox -- now partners -- on the other.
Late last month, Pixar and Disney Animation chief creative officer John Lasseter essentially declared war on Katzenberg by dating a slew of untitled Pixar and Disney Animation Studios films through 2018, going so far as to claim June 17, 2016, even though DWA already had put How to Train Your Dragon 3 there. Never before have a Pixar and DWA movie gone up against one another. Katzenberg and Fox, where Vanessa Morrison heads up Fox Animation Studios, retaliated by flooding the calendar through 2018 with their own untitled films, even planting one on June 16, 2017, a Pixar date. (Disney insiders say Katzenberg started the battle in the first place by scheduling movies that may or may not be done through 2016.)
[...] Fox Filmed Entertainment chairman-CEO Jim Gianopulos -- who stressed the studio's growing animation prowess at CinemaCon, the annual gathering of theater owners -- says it was in keeping with this goal that the studio and Katzenberg dated so many untitled and undisclosed films so far after Disney did the same.
"Obviously, it makes sense to put down dates and plant your flag," says Gianopulos. "A movie like Alvin and the Chipmunks, or another broad family film, could ultimately take one of those dates. So those slots might not be devoted to a DWA or Blue Sky movie, but the great majority will be. We have some ideas of what those films will be, but we just aren't ready to announce them."
Disney is likewise emboldened. Pixar remains an unparalleled box-office brand, while Disney Animation Studios is enjoying a renaissance with Tangled and Wreck-It Ralph. Disney's refrain was similar in terms of why it took the unusual step of dating so many untitled films. Executive vp distribution Dave Hollis says consumers have come to expect a Pixar movie in the third week of June and a Disney Animation Studios title around Thanksgiving. "We felt like this was an opportunity to send a signal," he notes.
Horn sounds a humorous note in commenting on the animation arms race. "Obviously, the more crowded the field, the more difficult it is for everyone," he says. "But this is a competitive business. From my perspective -- and I do believe this is reasonable -- the clear solution is for Jeffrey and Jim to stop making so many animated films."
I think Despicable Me 2 and The Smurfs 2 are going to be a lot more harmful to Turbo than Planes will. I also think The Smurfs 2 will have an impact on Planes' gross. Though, I guess with those two, it becomes a question of whether children prefer little blue elves or talking airplanes.

Actually, it wasn't Sony's fault for crushing Winnie the Pooh. It's technically Disney's fault, because they released Pooh at the same time and day as Harry Potter 7 Part 2.
