What Disney movie did you just watch?

Still, Pinocchio was released in 1940 and the Blue Fairy doesn´t have that kind of voice. Neither does Bambi´s mother or Faline a couple of years later.

I don't know about you guys, but I love both Snow White's voice and Fantasia.

I mean, yes, her voice isn't conventional, but you can't deny Adriana Casserotti's range.

Then again, I love Bobcat Goldthwait, so I might just have a thing for odd voices.

Dumbo:

I´d say the only Classic that actually feels timeless.

Simple story. Simple animation. Short movie.

But combined with great characters and a situation we can all identify with.

-The Princess and the Frog: So many faults in this movie; sadly. Don´t like the sidekicks characters at all. Way too much music; up until Dr. Facilier song is great. The rest are just pushing it and on top of that are not good. By the time the action takes place in the swamp I´m not interested anymore in what happens. I don´t care for Tiana or Naveen and there´s no way to know or believe when they fall in love. Plus, the ending and how Tiana becomes a princess makes no sense.

I do like the movie up until the swamp as I said; from story to songs. And I find Charlotte as a character great. Not only is she fun and funny but despite her faults she´s a very good person. Even tough she was rich she still treated Tiana like her friend and cared for her. To the point where she was actually happy for Tiana; despite that she didn´t get the prince...and that´s saying a lot.

What?! Oh, come on! That's not fair!

Anyhoo....

The last Disney movie I watched recently was Pete's Dragon, which I managed to finally watch in full! And I certainly have no regrets! Sure, it's a pretty long movie, but entertaining, nonetheless.

Patrick: Cinderella doesn´t have the same level of care and attention to details in the backgrounds as Sleeping Beauty or even Snow White (from 1937).
And yes, I was talking about those scenes you mentioned.

Hmm... I mean I really disagree. I feel like Cinderella is visually so strong. I can definitely agree Sleeping Beauty is a total standout, but Cinderella was created to revive the company and has such consistent art direction throughout the film.

I watched Brave last night - I've really grown to like this movie even more. I'm a huge fan of the animation and how realistically quick the character movement is. I totally understand a lot of the criticism for the film but, at the very least, it's a beautiful testament to what we can do with computers. The scene where Merida and her mother are catching fish is particularly amazing.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame:

Just a couple of issues with the film:

1. Gargoyles: Not going into that since we all know why they are a problem on themselves. But I´m going to point out one thing. The gargoyles are mean to come out of Quasimodo´s imagination, right? Then, how´s it that Djali see one come alive?

2. The romance: This is where Disney shoots themselves on the foot. One of the messages of the movie (if not THE message) is that we should look beyond what´s on the exterior of people. So, why Esmeralda falls in love with Phoebus?

I haven´t read the actual story so I don´t know what happens. And I wouldn´t mind Esmeralda ending with Phoebus if Disney had at least placed her in the position where Quasimodo is an option.

Other than that just a magnificent film overlooked by many; Disney themselves first. Three things go for it: animation, soundtrack and Frollo.

Alice in Wonderland:

Just a fun ride. One of the most fun of the Classics. And stands the test of time great.

The Rescuers Down Under:

I try to like this film a lot but I just can´t.

The movie is just spectacle. I find it very hollow. Can´t never hold my interest.

Every time I watch it just doesn´t feel like a Disney movie. It has an overall vibe of an animated TV series episode or just a rival company film.

And, as timeless as it is, the whole thing just screams 90´s.

The 2 things that fail for me are:

1. Bernard and Bianca: The movie is about them, right? So how come the don´t actually do anything on it? They meet and help Cody on the very last part of the film. I know that since they are in Australia they won´t be able to reach him instantly. However, had Disney put them through and actual adventure I wouldn´t mind.

2. McLeach: Never get to like the character. This is a true villain in every sense of the Disney word. And having so much screen time I don´t get why I can´t never "like him" as the rest of Disney villains.

Here´s hoping that I would eventually at least enjoy the movie.

At this moment this Classic ends up being at one place in the bottom.

The Lion King

Although I didn´t pay enough attention to it this time it is always a great movie.

Don´t know what it is about this film that just feels modern. Don´t think will ever be dated.

Plus, the whole package is astounding. So much, that I´m sure you forget that you´re watching animals. They are just characters.

The story/script is 50% while the other 50% is the animation and acting.

Aladdin

Best parts of it: Jafar, Genie and Iago.

A movie that´s both fun and gets to you because of the story.

So sad Disney decided to forgot everything about it except for Jasmine.

...I´m amazed they don´t even care for Genie anymore.

Do you guys have a movie that you have seen so many times, that it's just a fact of life, rather than an experience to watch? As in, you've seen the film so many times, yet despite being able to notice its flaws, you just don't care and cherish every single little moment time after time?

This is one of those for me. A couple of other Disney films would make that list as well.

Not sure if this counts, but I watched James and the Giant Peach twice this weekend. Mostly for Miriam Margoyles, who I wish got more screentime, but I do enjoy the film for the most part.

Mary Poppins, Beauty and the Beast, and Aladdin for me. Maybe that's why they're among my favorites.

For the entirety of May, the only Disney movies I watched for fun were Swiss Family Robinson and Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl. Anything else was largely for research or analysis. And even those viewings were due to my writing about aspects of the films for my column (along with watching Meet the Robinsons for commentary purposes). I haven't had a chance to do "leisure" viewings in awhile, most of my Disney watching is usually for research/analysis.

I adore Greek mythology and it was extremely painful to see what they´ve had done with it. So it took me a while. Still I forgave them just because they did portray Greek mythology, Hades and the music.

Plus, The Hunchback of Notre Dame...¡damn gargoyles!

Last week I watched Wreck-it-Ralph first time on DVD. Next one will probably be Atlantis, the lost empire which I also recently purchased on DVD. I've always have had some resistance against this movie, which I only saw once thus far and did not really like that much... but I might warm up to it, as I did to Treasure Planet and Hercules fro instance.

Answer to Avaitor: I think I've seen Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs so many times that it has become a fact of life for me . I suppose there are some flaws in the movie, but I do not really notice them.

Beauty and the Beast

Aladdin is my favorite Disney film. The Little Mermaid comes second. The Lion King is a masterpiece. Hunchback is underrated.

However, to me Beauty and the Beast is the perfect Classic.

Why?

The characters are great, the songs are all good and it has a perfect emotional balance. It has comedy, scary, beautiful and sad moments in just the right amounts. Nothing ever feels too much.

Plus, now that I´m paying attention it has an interesting color palette. Lots of orange (sunsets/fire), brown, yellow, red...

And a couple of things:

1. The computer animation (like the forks) now look dated but somehow fits the rest of the film without looking bad.

2. Kill me, but up until now I didn´t pay attention on how much of the movie takes place indoors. Be it inside the castle, Belle´s house or the tavern.

Funny, but for so much that Belle wanted to explore and have adventures just ends up living indoors.

Pinocchio:

Can´t never recall if this was the first Disney movie I saw with my mom or Dumbo.

Anyways, one of those 2. What I do remember is how scary it was. I went to see the play and don´t remember how they did the whale part but I got really scared.

Have to say, that coming right after Snow White is surprising how much better it is.
