I'm actually 90% sure that it did not come with a slipcover. Only the Blu-ray combo pack came with a slip, which has become a recent trend for Disney.

Really? That's interesting. I actually haven't seen any others like that - stuff like Pixar Shorts volume 2, movies like Brave, all of those DVDs have a slipcover as well as the Blu-Rays.

But if that's true, I won't fret over it.

Porco Rosso is a Hayao Miyazaki directed film.

JB Hifi in New New Zealand and probably Australia had a slip cover for the first edition (single disc) DVD. Blu-ray did not have a slip cover and I don't think the 2 DVD edition had one either.

So, I got my copy of Spirited Away... it seems to be a newer pressing, as it had a Disney Movie Rewards code sheet, but that's ALL it had. There was no chapter insert.

Was there originally one, or did it just have nothing at its first release? Because if it did, I feel gypped.

I just checked mine and it has one, though I bought mine when it first came out in 2003 and any Disney Film that came out 10 years ago probably doesn't have its booklet in a store right now as Disney began at one point to phase them out.

OK, so according to Wikipedia, these are the Ghibli movies (I left out Only Yesterday and the newest one, which hasn't been released in USA yet)

Castle In the Sky - I have both old and new Disney DVDs
Grave of the Fireflies - Old and new DVDs exist
My Neighbor Totoro - I have old FOX DVD, need old Disney DVD
Kiki's Delivery Service - Old and new Disney DVD exist
Porco Rosso - Only one R1, bought
Pom Poko - Only one R1, Bought
Whisper of the Heart - Only one R1, Will Buy
My Neighbors the Yamadas - Only one R1, got for free*
Spirited Away, only one R1, have
The Cat Returns, only one R1, bought
Howl's Moving Castle, only one R1, have
Tales from Earthsea, only one R1, bought
Ponyo, only one R1, bought
Arrietty, only one R1, bought

*That one is a DMR reward, isn't that nice? I will be pissed if there's no slipcover, though.

Is that correct?

I also bought the Disney release of Nausicaa, which says it's a Ghibli film even though it's not.

I am strictly trying to collect the region 1 DVDs, I know some are on Blu-Ray but until they all are I really won't bother with them.

Are there other Miyazaki movies that aren't part of Studio Ghibli that I should look into? Wikipedia lists quite a few, there's no way I can afford them all

So... the only ones I need are the older Disney release of My Neighbor Totoro (the new one lacks special features, like all the 2010 ones), the older Kiki's Delivery Service (I have my eye on one at Half.com, hopefully will buy soon), and Grave of the Fireflies.

Grave of the Fireflies, the old one has two discs but the one one, based on the Blu-Ray only has one. I hear the new one has both dubs. Is there any sense in having both, as I do for Castle In the Sky?

I believe the only animated movie that he directed outside Ghibli, provided we consider Nausicaa a Ghibli film, is Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro.
It's a wonderful film, I find it better than most of his Ghibli work, great as they are.

The rest were either anime series or films by Takahata that he only wrote or produced.

Is that Lupin III movie any good by itself? I know that's actually a TV series that has several movies, apparently Castle of Caglostro is the second one?

There have been many TV series and films based on the character.
The film though can certainly stand alone, you don't need to be exposed to any other Lupin III material to understand it. I haven't either.
And yes, I find it to be very good though I rate it higher than most do. It's still pretty well regarded.

No, I didn't see that!

But now I guess I know what I'm seeing in theaters come March :P

Is this one being distributed by Disney still? I notice it has big names like other dubs of theirs did, but their name isn't on the trailer at all.

Wow, so the DVD of The Cat Returns I got is a bootleg. I'm asking the seller to give me a refund or I will report them to eBay.

But I'm impressed... they even faked a slipcover and it has entirely the wrong picture. It's got the same picture scheme as the 2010 releases, and the same blue and yellow slipcover. It's like they redesigned the artwork entirely instead of just duplicating.

If anyone wants pictures so you know what to look out for, I can take some.

Disney DOES have distribution rights for past Ghibli movies minus Princess Mononoke. They won't distribute new movies unless otherwise stated.

Yeah, I think he meant that they aren't distributing any NEW ones. Who's doing the distribution of the newest movie, do you know?

GKIDS is the distributor of From Up on Poppy Hill.

Disney was the distributor of Princess Mononoke. It was just released under their Miramax banner. Though now I wonder if Mononoke stayed with them or was sold to Lionsgate with the rest of the Miramax titles.

Princess Mononoke is currently available to Disney Movie Club through Miramax
