I voted Both.

Gaston may seem rather simple. However, if you look at it a little deeper, he was going to kill a monster. He had no idea what it was like. Put yourself into his position. Who would believe in the "magic" that transormed the Beast? For all he knew, the Beast would come and kill their children. He does mock Belle and Clarise, but only because he finds them as being insane. It is not until late in the film, when he finds out the Beast is not a true monster, that Gaston becomes a villain.

The Beast is very debatable. I say he is a villain, that later redeems himself, but nonetheless, still a villain. He hated the outside world, turning down a poor lady. Should we feel sad for him if he was turned into a beast, what he really was? He has a temper issue as well (a pretty bad one too). If you even looked at him he would probably destroy you. That isn't the quality of a hero. Belle, the hero of the film, changes his personality, something she could have possibly done to Gaston, if she had truly loved him. The Beast was just the lucky one that Belle loved, and if it wasn't for him, he'd remain evil.

Antagonist does not always equal evil which does not always equal villain.

I agree with castleinthesky. The Beast did some villainous things that were simply unforgivable. I mean, he screams at Belle, "Fine! Then you can stay in there and starve!" before adding to his servants, "If she doesn't eat with me, she doesn't eat at all." There is no excuse for this kind of behaviour, even if you are ticked at being turned into a monster.

On top of that, the Beast doesn't really learn any lesson in the film. He was supposed to discover that "beauty is found within," but he ends up falling in love with a girl who is beautiful on the outside. If Belle had been ugly, I doubt he would have fallen for her. There is no evidence in the movie that his views on inner beauty have changed since he was the selfish young prince in the prologue.

I voted both. I don't think either are as "evil" as villains before them, but they were both villainous to an extent. To me, this is what made the "Fab Four" so successful. There weren't just clear-cut villains, but semi-good characters who were obstacles, too.

TLM: Triton, Ursula and Ariel (and her Faustian bargain).
Aladdin: Jafar and Aladdin (he couldn't pretend to be something he wasn't).
TLK: Scar and Simba (learn to face his past).

Unlike previous movies (where the characters were usually separated by a black and white view of good and evil), everyone had a bit of good and bad in them. Like real people.

I voted Gaston. He is obviously the villain in the film. I can see why people chose both, but ultimately Beast is a good guy and is just a little guarded, while Gaston is definitely a villain.

Well lots of people these days are selfish so would that make them a "villain" as well? I know that's not the best point in the world but I try :D Anyways the Beast could have been considered a villain before the events of BATB by the towns/village people, but now throughout the movie he's slowly redeeming himself by learning to be a good guy again, by learning to love, and be caring, gentle and patient. Gaston on the other hand was trying to win Belle's hand ONLY because of her looks as he sings in Belle " Here in town there's only she, who is as beautiful as me, so I"m going to woo and marry Belle" he was doing it for all the wrong reasons, and on top of that he blackmailed her into marrying him by throwing her dad in the Looney Bin, than he tried to eliminate the compitition. So Gaston is the main villain of the movie, and Beast like I said was a villain most likely but has now redeemed himself through his actions.
