Which makes anyone liking Fox and the Hound a little puzzling, considering it has a montage of scenes that use hunting and the death of animals as a MALE BONDING exercise. With upbeat music and a happy, smiley attitude.

Um... am I alone in finding that... perhaps the most shocking thing anyone at Disney has ever done, creatively? I mean, forget the dopey characters and lame songs and how boring it is. What about the movie's hypocrisy? Todd and Vixey are sacred - because we know they're a couple - but all the other animals we see shot and skinned... that's okay?!
I think The Fox and the Hound shows both sides to hunting. The scene where Tod's mother is shot is hardly positive. The scene where Dinky and Boomer open up the room with all the pelts and Tod kind of cowers does not show hunting as okay. Neither do all the scenes in which Amos Slade and Copper hunt for Tod. These scenes DO show the terror and devastation the hunted go through, made even worse by the fact that Tod's best friend is hunting him. Yes, it does show Amos, Copper, and Chief enjoying hunting season, but I don't think that makes it condone hunting. The montage is there to show how Copper is changing, and not necessarily for the better. Also, many people genuinely enjoy hunting, and that montage shows that. Do you think that hunting should be always be portrayed with sinister music and entirely evil characters? That would be unrealistic. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for animals. I'm a vegetarian on moral grounds. But, I realize not everyone is going to be, and if a person does eat meat, hunting is actually a more humane way to obtain meat than buying it in a supermarket.
As for Tod and Vixey being sacred because they are a couple, I think it's because they are main characters. When was the last time you saw Disney kill off a main character? The only character actually killed in TFatH is Tod's mother, and she is only in it for one or two minutes. Besides, Vixey is sacred because no one actually wants to kill her; they only want to kill Tod.
I know you were disappointed when you initially saw this movie because it didn't match up with what you thought it would be, but that's no reason to represent it wrongly.
