Why do YOU love Beauty and the Beast?
I love BatB because it dared to mock itself right in the opening number 'Bonjour (Belle)'. At the end of the song, you can see how everybody in the village stops with what they were doing to stand there around, just singing. You can see how Gaston is surprised by this. And then at the end, when Belle looks back, they feel they got caught and start to move around again. The characters *know* they're only actors in a play and therefore it doesn't matter that they're under-developed one-dimensional beings.
He's funnier than you are.Super Aurora wrote:OF COURSE!Lazario wrote:Actually... If I liked this movie, I would say the reason is Gaston as well. He's the only cleverly written, funny, amusing character here. He's kind-of cliched... but so is everyone. And at least his set-ups were great. It's not his fault (or the people who really are responsible for the funny things he says) that no one was able to match him. I've already sung his praises here, but seriously, these two lines really crown him as the only good thing about the movie:
"I use antlers in all of my DEcoraTING!"
"And every last inch of me's covered with hair!"
As a matter of fact... He's such an entertaining character, it makes the movie all the weaker that Belle, Beast, Maurice, and the staff of the castle can't keep up.
Unlike the other characters, Gaston is a MAN. A MANLY MAN. He knows where wimmins are suppose to belong (in the kitchen).
Belle was a fool for not marrying him. Silly woman.

I agree with this very much. It felt way too rushed and despite the implied time spent together Belle still doesn't know the Beast's name. Combined with the total lack of subtlety involving Gaston's character and the rushed looking animation it's why I feel the film does not deserve the status it has.pap64 wrote:This goes into my passage of time complaint. It is implied that a lot of time went by when Belle was at the castle. But it all goes by so fast you wonder what happened.
Human again for me helps alot with the time passage problem, but the focus is still mostly on the objects and not the title characters.
If there's one thing to really love about BatB, it's the music, both the songs and the score. It used to be my favorite thing to listen to in the car during long trips for a while (along with Nightmare Before Christmas). I also feel that "Something There" is kind of under-rated.

I'd definitely agree with most everyone else that music is probably the shining point of Beauty and the Beast. If you like nothing else, you usually enjoy the music.
However, my favorite aspect of B&tB is probably Beast. I like the arc of that character, and it's an unusual thing to find in a Disney film. I like that, for once, they take a character who is a villain (in the sense that his punishment to be a Beast was mostly deserved), and showed that he was redeemable, that people change, etc. And the stained glass opening is beautiful--probably one of the things that people remember most about the film. I've always liked that they went a different direction with a "classic" opening other than using a book for once, and it worked. The cast of the film is also excellent, and I've always felt the enchanted objects were very charming characters.
The cliches with Belle and the Beast's romance are somewhat excusable, imo, because the film is in the same vein as Harlequin romance novels or romantic comedies. At the very least, it's the best romance of that type that there could be, thanks to the animated format. I've always felt animation heightens the senses. You could have the best musical, romance, or even the best horror film in animation, if done right. There's just so many things animation can do that live-action can't.

Listening to most often lately:
Taylor Swift ~ ~ "The Fate of Ophelia"
Taylor Swift ~ "Eldest Daughter"
Taylor Swift ~ "CANCELLED!"
This film is one of my favorites.
What I love most about it are the next things:
1. The wonderful backgrounds of the dilapidated castle, especially in the 2nd half. They gave me a haunted, dark feeling which really added something to the film. The contrast between the ruined castle and the romantic story is epic.
2. The romantic tension that builds up in the song "something there" and perfectly flows through in the song "Beauty and the beast".
Classic moment.
3. The beautiful animation in my favourite scene of Cogsworth where he says "But.....why?" in a desperate manner. I really got chills from that specific scene when I watched it in the cinema.
4. The wonderful, earthy color of Gaston's jacket. It makes him look manly. Also the amazing white/purple morning sky when Belle sings her first notes of the song "Belle" is something I absolutely love.
5. The beautiful image of Belle and the Beast sitting in front of the fireplace in the background when chip says "what's there mama?" and mrs potts says "shhhhh, I'll tell you when you're older". Another one of my favourite scenes. I have that one printed as a poster in my bedroom.
I can't wait to experience these wonderful things again when it comes out on dvd and blu ray in a few weeks over here!!!

I love Beauty and the Beast, but it's not my favorite. I loved to watch the VHS a lot as a kid, and it's so funny because when you're a kid the film feels so much longer and satisfying and then when you get older you really do look towards more of the flaws than the actual storytelling.
I never paid attention to the fact that Belle and the Beast all of a sudden fall in love. Beast saves Belle from the wolves, then "Something There" plays which makes up for what I guess is a month at the castle, and then BOOM "Beauty and the Beast". During all of that though, Gaston is scheming and makes La Fou stay in front of Belle and Marice's house before "Something There". Granted, he is a cartoon, he still couldn't stand there in the cold for a month or week, much less a day without getting hypothermia, so really it seems like a whole day, relatively speaking that Belle's been away before she saves Maurice.

Hans Bacher, someone who did a lot of background designs for and helped design the castle for the film...actually quit when he saw what they changed the design of the castle to in the final stage! However, until I see his whole entire design, I think the final castle is fine, if not actually the best of the designs for it.rodis wrote:People always praise the design of the castle
Marky, if I read correctly in other threads, that image of Chip saying "what's there mama" has been changed to the Special Edition version where you don't see Bell and the Beast by the fireplace. I'm sorry.

VagueSimplicity, well...I like to think Le Four actually left when he got too cold or tired, and went back each day for as long as he could...maybe even purposely hiding as a snow man the one day.

No, why turn it around? I just sum up the things I love the most.Giygas wrote:So basically, you're saying that if the new edition had been released as the original in 1991, you would have hated it?Marky_198 wrote:<snip>
And of course if you take everything out that I love, the product that's left over is not as special to me anymore.

oh my,when i am reading this,i just want to tell you if you are getting your Blu-ray,you are not going to experience these wonderful things again ( especially when you choose the special edition to watch)Marky_198 wrote:This film is one of my favorites.

first the castlle back ground now is very bright and colorful after restored ( so not dark and haunted )
and the animation of the 3 and 5 are totally changed, you can still see 3 in the "original version" but 5 is gone in this blu ray disc forever.
besides if you choose to see special edition,
there's Human again between "something there " and "beauty and the beast" ,the pace is tatally different!

You do realise that you could easily just skip "Human Again" with the "Original Theatrical Edition" (or at least what that is on the DVD/Blu-Ray)? And I am sure that DisneyChris confirmed with his advanced copy that Cogsworth's animation is the original, at least in the OTE. With the other points, I can't really help you, but as far as Gaston's tunic goes, you could make a little paper doll of him with the colours you want, and cover the screen with him whenever he comes on.Marky_198 wrote:This film is one of my favorites.
