Don't forget Disney bought Pixar because they wanted in on the awesomeness!!
Really?DisneyJedi wrote:Okay, true, that if it weren't for John Lasseter, Disney would still be doing CGI movies and not doing any hand-drawn movies. But I'm just kind of mad that Pixar is outshining Disney when it comes to animated movies.
"To Infinity and Beyond!: The Story of Pixar Animation Studios" by Karen Paik explains Disney and Pixar's motives better than I can. It's a good read. You should check it out.DisneyJedi wrote:Why? So they could leech off of them?

And you are complaining about Pixar???? Its not Pixar's fault they are better than Disney. Afterall, they idolized Disney, nearly all animators do. They are the ones keeping Walt's original ideals alive and well. Disney is the one who steamrolls the poor man's grave all the time. Mind you, I don't think everything Pixar makes is solid gold. I didn't like Cars at all. I'm not technically some Pixar-fangirl. But I recognize well written stories and well done animation when I see it. Not to mention the voice casts they get are always so amazing!DisneyJedi wrote:Well, why the hell is Disney not being what it used to be?! I'm guessing because the company's now run by Cheapy the Cheapskate. I mean, the only reason Disney isn't itself lately is because some idiot turned the company into a frickin' piggy bank!Siren wrote:
Pixar is what Disney use to be and ought to still be.
Well, up until now... Toy Story 3, Cars 2, and a rumrored Monsters, Inc. 2Siren wrote: The difference between Pixar and Disney is Disney is always trying to recapture their glory days. Pixar just hasn't hit a point they need to recapture anything. Again, because a mixture of solid story telling, beautiful animation, and stellar voice casts.
If we are talking Dreamworks, then let's rember that coming up they have "Shrek 4," a "Puss in Boots" spin off, "Kung Fu Panada 2," "Madagascar 3," and a sequel to whatever else Katzenburg feels like later.SWillie! wrote:Pixar isn't the studio you should be worrying about. Part of me hates to say it, but let's take a good look at which animation studio's lineup over the next few years looks most promising.
When we look at Pixar, we see Toy Story 3, Cars 2, and Monsters, Inc. 2. Bear and the Bow looks to be the light at the end of the tunnel that is the next few years at Pixar. (Although yes, I realize that the sequel films all have potential to be outstanding. Except Cars.)
And then we look at Disney, where they seem to be running around as if Mickey has been kidnapped and someone made Miley Cyrus king of the Magic Kingdom. Tangled will hopefully knock everyone's socks off, but unless Disney execs get their heads ________________, at the moment, there really isn't much to be overly excited about at WDAS.
And then we have Dreamworks. How to Train Your Dragon is getting some AMAZING early feedback, and with 2-3 movies coming out per year, there's only room for more like it. I think Dreamworks will slowly but surely take the reign as "best animation studio" over Pixar in the next couple years. I hope I'm wrong, because I am a Disney fanboy and I'm proud of it, but even as a Disney fanboy, I have to admit that Dreamworks films look the most promising at the moment.
And to answer the initial point of the thread, it's stupid to hate on Pixar. Like it's been said, Pixar is what Disney used to be. They have the same values and produce the same quality that Disney has throughout the majority of it's history.
As with all Pixar films, it has to bend to fit what adults would want (serious, mindless boredom) and what kids want (fun, fun, FUN!) to get both groups to enjoy it. Hence their opening of "Up" and then dogs with helium voices.Julian Carter wrote:Up was nice. But did any of you realise how it degenerated into a generic comedy into the 2nd and 3rd acts? The film has as much an identity crisis as Hunchback. And dogs with helium voices do not a serious, though-provoking movie make (as it would have you belive in the first 15 minutes).
As for DisneyJedi's concerns ... please be understanding. Yes, perhaps he's a fanboy. But then so am I. I love all animation, but I have an intense interest in WDAS (and yes, I would be happier if they were the leaders of the pack).
Go ahead. Call me names.
I can't help feeling that way. I have OCD and Asperger's Syndrome, which probably contributes to the "obsession". So I can understand how DisneyJedi feels. He probably understands that one should not obsess over a particular animation studio, but the brain is a complex organ, and sometimes it's difficult to block certain emotions and feelings.
Think about it.

I agree.SillySymphony wrote:Title of this thread:

Oh man if a Pixar film had been nominated the same year Spirited Away did and won, I swear there would rioting in the streets. And then it deifinitly prove that the Best Animated Feature category is rigged.magicalwands wrote:Seems like if it were any studio other than Disney being on top, you wouldn't be happy at all.DisneyJedi wrote:But I'm just kind of mad that Pixar is outshining Disney when it comes to animated movies.
Pixar isn't the only one stealing the Oscars away from Disney. Spirited Away beat out both Treasure Planet and Lilo and Stitch.DisneyJedi wrote:And because of that, Pixar's movies continue to steal away the Best Animated Feature Oscar, beginning with Ratatouille- despite me rooting for it. Thus, I sometimes wish Pixar never existed.
It really saddens me this thread was created. 2009 was a VERY great year for animation. We got a new Miyazaki film Ponyo, LAIKA's first film with Coraline, and we got fabulously created Fantastic Mr. Fox. I wouldn't want these films to have been less of what they are or not created at all for the sake of Disney or even Pixar winning an award.
By the way, nearly everyone at Pixar went to CalArts. You would think a lot of them started with traditional animation basics before moving onto 3D. Pixar is the popular studio because they believe in good stories. I don't know why it is concocted in your minds Pixar hates 2D animation.
