Basically

This special box set includes the Widescreen 2-disc Spider-Man: Special Edition plus an all-new bonus disc that will include a sneak peek at the new movie, exclusive added features, a sampler of the new Activision Spider-Man game, and more.

Ho Hum. Promos for the new movie. Promos for the new game. And again, we're expected to pay for them?

But here's what really grates:

Spider-Man™ (Superbit) - $26.96 - Featuring a new anamorphic widescreen transfer with English DD5.1 and DTS 5.1 Surround audio the biggest surprise on this release is the inclusion of an exclusive commentary with Tobey Maguire.

So, the additional commentary is only on the Superbit release. A release not even supposed to have a commentary by Columbia's own (misguided in my opinion) Superbit Mission statement.

They should just make a Superbit Deluxe release with the new commentary and a selection of features old and new on the second (and third if required) discs.

This sucks!

Ummm...Ewww...Despite the Toby commentary being very tempting, I'm most definitely holding on to my current 2-Disc. What a waste of money on Columbia's part...

I have to agree with you - in that the commentary & DTS is tempting, but there is no point in upgrading from the current 2-disc. I'm not even sure how good a 'commentator' McGuire would be.

Not really a waste of money, because money is in the front of their minds. What a perfect opportunity to re-release the disc, and throw in a few promos for the coming sequel. Presto! Marketing magic!

Doubtful I will get either...

Such a disappointment when you consider the REAL Columbia 3 Disc Deluxe Editions: Panic Room and Black Hawk Down.

Doesn't Spider-Man deserve more?

Absolutely right - Columbia have proven their track record with excellent 3-disc sets. If you can do it for less-"successful" films, as mentioned, why not for their mega-sequel spawning-blockbuster?

But then again, Spidey HAS a perfectly good SE - one of the few recent 2-disc blockbusters that hasn't been filled with mindless cross-promotion (it only has about 2 ads for the Spider-man game, and the rest is pure gold). I suppose it only makes sense that if you add a third disc, it should include all the advertising they didn't have on the first set!

This is a *major* disappointment, though to be fair I expected it.

I do have to question their marketing strategy here though. If Disc 3 is just promos and there's nothing else new, why not just repromote the original SE (which now runs for $19.95 SRP after a February 3 price drop) and give away the new disc as a freebie at Best Buy or something (like they did with a recent Hellboy promo DVD.) Especially since the Spider-Man SE is one of the bestselling discs ever, I wonder what kind of market they think there is for this release.

And eguh, including a commentary on the Superbit release destroys the point of Superbit.

I'll just keep the original set, thanks.

The UK artwork (nice) and full details on the "bonus disc" (not so nice. In fact darn crappy). It's more than likely the US bonus disc will duplicate the UK one exactly.

I said I didnt want

- Trailers for upcoming movies on home video
- Family entertainment features such as sing-alongs, karaoke and trivia games
- Educational features such as brainteasers and puzzles
- Cast credits, production notes and movie star biographies. <~ especially this! which Columbia/Tristar counts as a special feature!

Then I put 3 on the two DVD-Rom questions

Well it looks like somebody has come to their senses. Play.com are selling this for a ultra low £11.99 (or 52% off the MSRP of £24.99).

Guess they finally realised nobody would pay £18 when the normal 2 disc set is selling for £7, or the first disc can be bought in a set containing Spider-Man, Charlie's Angles and Vertical Limit for £15.

I really don't know what Columbia are thinking, setting an ultra high £24.99 MSRP for this...

Well, much to my dismay (I'm weak! Weak I tell you!) I got the UK set from Play.

What a disappointment. I wasn't expecting much, but I was at least expecting a new 3 disc case and cover.

What we got was the old, still plastic wrapped copy of the existing 2 disc set, wrapped in a cardboard slipcover with - get this - the bonus disc in a cardboard sleeve simply slipped into the slipcover to hold it in place!

It's an insult to such a popular movie - especially when the UK just got their 3 disc Panic Room and Blackhawk Down sets (also from Columbia) around this time - new content, new covers, new packaging.

To be totally honest, I enjoyed the first one, and I'm most likely going to see the second one. However, I don't think it was spectacular and I remain immune to the Spidey phenomenom. In fact, I think it's the most overrated comic book-adaptation film of all time. There's times when the movie borders on the line of pretentiousness, like it's trying to be something more than what it is. I agree with with EW in declaring X2: X-Men United as the best comic book-adaptation film of all time!

The first one was ok it wasn't that great so I don't think I will buy either of the special editions (WHY TWO SPECIAL EDITIONS????????) but I will still probabbly still the second one.

James, have you watched the 3rd disc yet? Any good?

I notice the packaging for the Region 1 Deluxe Edition advertises that it includes the theatrical teaser. I'm guessing that's for Spider-man 2, although if it was the first film's cool teaser, that'd be nice.

It's rubbish (or should I say "Dross"?). It may be worth trying out the DVD-ROM content (a demo of the Spider-Man 2 game, which does look good on the consoles) but I doubt my personal PC will have a spec high enough to do it justice. I'm not allowed games on the work laptop.

Yes, its for Spider-Man 2. I would have thought the Twin Towers teaser may have been allowed on International editions. But apparently not. Plus, I consider the Towers' role in the teaser to be comparible to a fitting tribute, not to cause any offence.

Yes, I think that Spider-Man is a must get for the upgrade.
Both Spider-Man (Superbit Collection) and Spider-Man (3-Disc Deluxe Edition) includes movie money coupon good for admission to Spider-Man 2.
Since I don't own Spider-Man on DVD I must get this one.
