An art show?! Seriously?! Wow that is just depressing that that's being considered more airworthy than this. You have my deepest sympathies.Disneykid wrote:Crap, my local ABC cancelled this tonight to show a live special about some art show in Miami. Needless to say, I'm ticked off. I was hoping it'd pop up on YouTube so I can replay it, now I'm hoping it shows up so I watch it, period.
So far I gotta say I'm pretty impressed. This special is better than I thought.
I'm glad they're NOT talking about Pixar and are sticking with 2D animation discussion. Heh

The "Dreams Come True: A Celebration of Disney Animation" on ABC was so great! There's something about seeing all of these great Disney films together and seeing people like Sigourney Weaver, Elton John, Whoopi Goldberg, John Lasseter, Dick van Dyke, Jamie Lee Curtis, Anika Noni Rose and Selena Gomez all reminiscing about these amazing films was really incredible. There's something about Disney and people about how much they love Disney that brings such a joy to my heart.
They did seem to ignore a lot of great films during the special, though (Hunchback of Notre Dame, Lilo & Stitch, The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, The Great Mouse Detective, The Emperor's New Groove).
However, they talked a lot about Pinocchio, Snow White, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, The Lion King, The Jungle Book, The Little Mermaid and The Princess and the Frog.
Unfortunately, they had to invite Miley Cyrus. Who would have thought she was more annoying outside of her show? Why wasn't Bruno Campos anywhere? He would have definitely been a more valuable and interesting presence.

I thought it was good too. I liked the favorite movie, song, and scene parts with the famous people, including Whoopi Goldberg talking about her role as Shenzi and Elton John talking about the songs. I also liked Dick Van Dyke's little girl story.
They did talk a lot about TPatf, even a little more than I wanted to hear or see. They showed a bunch of scenes that I would have liked to have seen at the theather for the first time than at my home a week before the movie comes out. Oh well, hopefully they didn't reveal too much to have me not captivated as much at the movie. It wasn't like they spoiled some of the plot.
But I still think it was a nice documentary.

I really enjoyed this! This was my first Disney special I've watched and I can say I was extremely pleased! I loved all the different people they got (yes I can say Miley Cyrus wasn't that bad because she was barely on
) and listening to some of the memories they had (When Serena said she's watched TLM like 50 times, I was like HA! I've out-watched you!!! MUAHAHA...I need a life).
I really liked some of the scenes I've seen for PatF. I just hope when I actually see the movie, I don't feel like I've seen it all already...I'm gonna ruin it for myself!

Ugh, please tell me she's not in it that much. I absolutely cannot stand her.estefan wrote: Unfortunately, they had to invite Miley Cyrus. To bolded: I'm really not that surprise. I wish they did. The villain talk was rather short. They didn't even talk about Malificant which is surprising, and not even Chernabog or fantasia. Surely that would left impression on celebrities.estefan wrote:The "Dreams Come True: A Celebration of Disney Animation" on ABC was so great! As for Miley Cyrus, yea short appearance but even then she gave off an obnoxious "don't care" attitude. As if she's the shit. Everyone else had really fun and enjoyable time talking about their disney experience.
I do agree they gave too much away on Princess frog movie. oh well.

Wow, this was dumb. Wasted my time watching it. Seriously just a bunch random of people sharing their random Disney memories. I didn't get anything out of this and find some of those people quite annoying. I also found them randomly selecting what aspect ratio to show the film clips in really annoying. ABC has made far better Disney specials
For those who missed it, you in fact, didn't miss anything.

Yea I was hoping for more look into behind the disney animation studio and it's movies, not people loving their favorite movie. But when I heard all the celebrities names appeared in this thread i knew what to expect.jpanimation wrote:Wow, this was dumb. Wasted my time watching it. Thank you so much, Uncle Remus! I wasn't expecting anyone to post it so quickly.
I enjoyed the special overall. There did seem to be a bit too much emphasis on the "big four" from last Disney renaissance, but other films were at least given a bit of attention (yay, Alice!). Now that I think about it, the special focused mainly on the Platinum films, which I find interesting. I bet more obscure Disney films were discussed by the participants but were edited out of this special for time. Either way, I still liked watching this.
On a random note, why is Pinocchio the only film shown without its latest restoration? They kept using the drab 2002 one instead of the more vibrant 2009 one. They even used Snow White's new 2009 restoration for its respective clips.

They also do mention Pocahontas and Mulan..they even had the singing voice for Pocahantas on the special......though the Lion King, Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, and The Little Mermaid did get a lot of praise....which it should....they also talked about Bambi.....and I also loved the story Dick Van Dyke about a little girl coming up to him and started singing a ballad from Marry Poppins...Let's Go Fly a Kite

Hey all,
First off, a BIG thank you to Uncle Remus for posting the special on youtube. I wasn't home, and thanks to you I was able to see it. Thanks a million!
On a side note: man, i am so glad Disney has gone to such lengths to restore the classics. Watching the special, I could tell some of the footage was from old sources, and boy do they look better now!
And...is it just me, or Charlotte becoming more appealing every time I see her? "Im sweating a like a sinner at church"??? LOVE HER!!!

Why was Aladdin pillarboxed to 1.33:1?
As for a more general and substantial reaction, I have to agree with the few who thought the special was kind of lame. It'd be so easy to take this idea and make a great hour of television. But it seems like they just wanted to take the cheapest path possible. Did they just go through the company speed dial list and get people who owe them and are steadily employed? (Ty Pennington?) Plus some famous black people. (Magic Johnson?) And if you're going to bring up the race issue, bring it up. Pussyfooting around it in vague terms is just insulting and lame. Obviously, this was a glorified 42-minute ad for Princess and the Frog and I'm glad I saw it... but I must say they didn't do a very good job. I may not be the target audience for the show or the movie, but I left with no greater interest in it. And a major missed opportunity to pay notice to some of the many films they ignored. At least we got to hear some of Selena Gomez's "Cruella DeVil" cover!

I actually enjoyed the special quite a bit. Yes, it was extremely promotional and yes, it was overly skewed toward the 80s/90s films, but at least it's promoting a movie I'm genuinely excited about and those 80s/90s films don't seem so overhyped now as we enter our third decade since the birth of that era. Besides, TPatF is most immediately connected to those films, not Walt's.
Of course, it will come as no surprise that the thing I liked the most was the prevalent featuring of Whoopi Goldberg, who kind of ran the show and had wonderful things to say about a whole host of Disney classics. Given her intricate involvement with the studio, and the fact that she is known to be a dedicated Disney fan even when not being paid to appear on ABC promotional hours, her comments seemed more genuine and worthwhile than the others. That said, I enjoyed the other interviews too.
I agree that the side-stepping of the race issue was extremely awkward and I can't begin to understand why Disney would want to avoid that topic. Or maybe Anika Noni Rose truly believes that the most glaring omission from Disney princess films has always been a New Orleans backdrop.
Other than that, my biggest problem with the special was its structure. I would have preferred a chronological approach to the one they used, i.e. divided by production elements/departments, just like making-of featurettes are for DVDs... that kind of structure makes sense when focusing on one movie, but not so much for a retrospective. If anything about this felt lamely promotional, it was that.
But in the end, I was very excited to see this and am even more excited now for The Princess and the Frog.
