And I do think that all of the love for "Polar Express" is mildly surprising, since it's well known as one of the reasons why people have so much contempt for mo-cap. Which really sucks for good films like A Christmas Carol, which will be less likely to recieve fair judgement due to poor use of the medium prior to its release. (Yes, Polar Express, I am looking at you!)

Well, I can't speak for other PE fans, but in my case it's because for me, the "look" of a film and the medium it is told in is much, much less important than how much I can get into the story, how much "heart" does it have, how touched am I by the emotional journey it takes me on. And Polar Express really resonated for me in those areas. The timeless idea of the pure innocence and faith of believing in things like Santa Claus past the age when most would be too worldly or cynical to do so. It was my favorite movie in 2004 (animated or otherwise) and would have been whether it was mo-cap, hand drawn, CGI, stop motion, puppetry, or live action. Besides, I didn't have a problem with the "look" of the film anyway, and actually enjoyed things like the art direction of the North Pole sequences. Also, I love the songs/score, and things like "Spirit of the Season" and "Believe" have for me become contemporary Christmas classics. I do understand the purist arguments about mo-cap being kind of a cheat as far as character animation goes, but again, when I watch a movie I don't dwell on tech stuff - for me it's mostly about story, story, story and how much I can get into that story. And it seems to have been embraced as a new Christmas classic by a reasonably large audience, so I guess there are others who enjoyed the story enough to outweigh any flaws with the mo-cap system in use for the film.

I am not condemning the "look" of "The Polar Express," either. It's a perfectly valid medium. But it was a weak story, and left a bad taste in the mouth for the people who thought that the medium did matter. The book does have all of that emotional meaning for me, but when you make it into a movie that long, with weird casting choices and bizarre deviations from the plot (and in ways that really didn't enhance the story or make it more enjoyable), it loses some of that. Part of the appeal of the book was that it was short, simple, and beautiful. The movie wasn't really any of those things, IMO.
