The Diamond Collection
Oh yay, I get to have my favorite one on Blu-ray right before we all perish!Barbossa wrote:Don't forget, there won't be any after Cinderella. The world is going to blow up that December.
Actually...I think the press release forgot they'll be using the IMAX prints...but I do hope you could be right.JDCB1986 wrote:Also, while they previously announced they were going to use the IMAX prints for Beauty And The Beast, The Lion King & Aladdin, they are now promising to use the original negatives ! ENHANCED? No, we're supposed to see them the original way they were! They're supposed to be restored to their original look, original colors, original everything, no enchancement, no changes!!! Ah nooooo! The new Diamond Collection takes full advantage of the newest breakthroughs in film restoration to exhibit these movies in Blu-ray Hi-Def, ensuring each film is digitally enhanced from their original negatives providing for the first time ever a pristine 1080p picture and Dolby Digital 7.1 surround sound.
UNLESS they mean enchanced to have more resolution, 1080p, but I thought films were always in high-def since they were made, and how could you make a higher resolution out of less resolution?

I thought the general consensus was that Aladdin's IMAX print only added detail, keeping everything else unaltered (well, except Genie's "take off and go" line and the opening song), making it superior to the original. I thought the Aladdin IMAX version looked fantastic on DVD and was looking forward to that on Blu-ray. Beauty And The Beast and The Lion King made changes so I guess the original negatives will be good but wouldn't they have digital files instead of negatives (for some reason I have it in my head that negatives are only with film). Either way, I'm sure they'll all look fantastic.

From the first post... "Disney promises that each title will be remastered from the original negative (when available) for a pristine 1080p picture and stunning 7.1 soundtrack. As with all special Disney releases, these titles will only be available for a limited time."Disney Duster wrote:Actually...I think the press release forgot they'll be using the IMAX prints...but I do hope you could be right.JDCB1986 wrote:Also, while they previously announced they were going to use the IMAX prints for Beauty And The Beast, The Lion King & Aladdin, they are now promising to use the original negatives ! I don't think the "press release forgot" haha. I'm sure whoever wrote the press release knew what they were talking about. I mean, only time will tell, but I think, since this is the official press release, that it is probably the most accurate. Guess we'll just have to wait and see.

I'm perfectly calm.diego14_1992 wrote:Ok..ummm "JDCB1986" calm downCan we please not turn yet another thread into a Blu-ray vs. DVD debacle ? This thread is to discuss The Diamond Collection. If The Diamond Collection is exclusively Blu-ray, then that is that. Don't like it ? Don't post here.
Well Aladdin isn't one of the titles included in the press release. So they could go back to the original negatives for Beauty And The Beast & The Lion King while still using the IMAX print for Aladdin.jpanimation wrote:JDCB1986 wrote:Also, while they previously announced they were going to use the IMAX prints for Beauty And The Beast, The Lion King & Aladdin, they are now promising to use the original negatives ! The enhancement could mean sound mixes - I assume all will be 7.1. Its amazing how people complain about the visuals but accept changes to the sound so easily. And before you mention you get the "mono" too - in Europe we don't (and based on the Pinocchio Mono faux-pas, you don't get the original Mono in the US either).Disney Duster wrote:[ENHANCED? I think the comment about original negatives can't be taken as gospel. No way will Disney transfer a CAPS film from the film negative. They'll do it from the digital files, just like they have from for the majority of CAPS produced DVDs (all infact, except early CAPS DVDs).
As for IMAX or not, again I don't think it should be taken literally. A Beauty and the Beast: Special Edition still has an original negative/source - because its literally a different film. If they release Beauty and the Beast: Special Edition in the B&tB slot - the original negative/source will be the IMAX one.
I've not explained that very well, but hopefully you can see what I mean.
In short - I don't expect Disney to change - after all, the DVDs they sold with IMAX and "Original" cuts available hardly flopped in the marketplace, and boasting two edits on the packaging is another selling point to the general masses.

They forgot to say "This list is subject to change the moment one of these titles underperforms".JDCB1986 wrote:and from the press release...Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment have formally announced the Diamond Collection, which represents 14 of the most beloved and historic animated films the studio has ever made. Yeah, we probably will. On the home page it stated that Snow White's DVD release this fall would only be branded as a "2-Disc Set", so I'm sure that while these Diamond Edition Blu-Rays will be released, a "2-Disc Set" DVD will accompany it.Old Fish Tale wrote:Don't worry! Re: The Diamond Collection
Film can be scanned to as many as 6000 lines of resolution, which is likely what "enhanced" means, as VHS was only 250 lines, laserdisc was 420 lines, DVD is 520 lines, and Blu-Ray can range from 720 to 1080 lines. Of course, we're not gonna actually get 6000 lines on the Blu-Ray. Probably just a down-conversion to 1080.Mike Duster wrote:UNLESS they mean enchanced to have more resolution, 1080p, but I thought films were always in high-def since they were made, and how could you make a higher resolution out of less resolution?
So for restoration, it's likely being enhanced by being scanned and remastered in higher resolution than the last restoration.
It's like how HD masters created in 2000 aren't as good as HD masters created in 2009. The advances in technology between now and then provides different/better results.
