Using the term "matte" may make it sound more acceptable, but when it all comes down to it, they're still cropping the original negatives so that's the term I choose to use.
No, they're not. 'Cropping' means that you're taking a 1.33:1 image, and just cut off the top and bottom off it. 'Matting' means that you're creating a widescreen image, while shooting in full frame. That way the top and bottom are protected for television use, and you're matting the picture in theaters and additionally on home video as well. It's not about choosing a term, it's what's the right term in this situation. And since these films were designed for showing in 1.75:1, it's 'matting'.
