S2M, instead of describing these "perfect actresses", would you care to list some of them? Because no actress is perfect for any role. With lots of vocal training, I'm sure Anne could nail Judy's songs. Plus, we haven't even heard her sing with a low voice, like Judy's, so it's best not to make any judgements about it until there's some sort of preview.

I don't have a list of actresses (I'm not a casting agent), but it's a simple matter of casting calls or going to agents or even acting/musical theater top schools. That's a no-brainer. It's also a no-brainer that Anne was cast due to a desire for a big name. I have nothing against Anne, but I do not agree with her for this role. Of course, I realize she has a lot of fans who will argue that point to the end just because they're fans. And I disagree with you that there are no actresses that fit any role perfectly. I don't see how anyone who loves film could even think that.

What I'm saying is that NO actress fits every person's description of a character. There are and will always be some flaws in a performance, and all flaws are usually about the actress's portrayl of the character, since no actress is going to please everyone who sees the movie.

I agree that no actress will please EVERYONE, but disagree that there are always flaws in a performance. That's why directors shoot multiple takes.

I've never been a big fan of Judy Garland. But I have trouble picturing Anne as Judy Garland. I mean, Anne is a pretty tall woman, while, on the other hand, Judy was fairly short.

I did hear that the biography from which this movie is based is supposed to be pretty harsh. It will be something interesting to see, in any case.

Just re-read the original post-
It says that it will be made into a stage show, as well. I guess we can speculate that Anne will be singing in the movie, since it's pretty certain that she would be singing in the stage show.

Also, is this the first time a musical and movie have opened simultaneously with the same lead? That's pretty neat, actually.

my chicken is infected wrote:Warning - the DVD of the miniseries is missing about 30 minutes of the film, or so I hear. I really don't understand why, but yeah. I need to find my videotape of the original ABC broadcast and get it recorded onto a DVD.
The DVD is not missing any footage of the original release. The DVD offers the Miniseries exactly the way it originally aired on ABC. However for a limited time exclusively through the ABC website you could purchase the 2 VHS set which consisted of an extended cut of the film. This included: extended concert footage, the Austrailia concert scene where Judy is booed off stage, dressing room scenes between Judy and Vincent on the set of The Pirate, a scene just before Judy meets Vincent for the first time - to name a few. When the VHS and DVD were finally given a "wide release" (with the black cover/ judy singing into mic) they gave us the miniseries as it aired on TV without the extra footage included in the limited Special Edition VHS. This is what most people are referring to when they say the DVD "lacks" footage. The DVD does include one of the deleted scenes but only as a supplement. It was not added back to the film the way it was on the first VHS. The photo here is of my double VHS. Parts 1 and 2.

Side-note: I've seen sellers on Ioffer.com selling the extended cut transfered to DVD. Though it wasn't officially released on DVD it is not unattainable.
