In the fall of 2005, I got following OOP titles via GameStop, all in near-mint condition: Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs: Platinum Edition - $16.99 Pinocchio: Gold Collection - $14.99 Peter Pan: Special Edition - $9.99 Sleeping Beauty: Special Edition - $12.99 Beauty and the Beast: Platinum Edition - $12.99 The Lion King: Platinum Edition - $12.99 Tarzan: Collector's Edition - $12.99
I almost feel like I've asked you this before, but I don't know...how do you remember what you bought when and for how much?!? Do you have the receipts right in front of you?
I keep track via a list on my computer (though some sections need updating), as well as the receipts.
The Avaitor wrote:Well Gamestop puts their prices on their covers, so I'm guessing that albert must of still kept them on... or maybe he does keep his receipts.
Both, actually. For the most part, I have the receipts inside the DVD case (probably 23% of my DVDs don't have the receipt for whatever reason). And I put the price tags on the inside of the case as well, just in case I don't have the receipt but need to remember how much I paid for it.
The Avaitor wrote:Although I'm still wondering why he got [ii]Snow White[/i] and Lion King, considering his history with those two.
They may be crappy movies but there's some special features on Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs that I enjoy having and revisiting. And I pretty much got The Lion King so that there's nothing missing from my DAC collection. I doubt I'll get it when it resurfaces on DVD and comes to Blu-Ray, though.

And on one hand, I really want it so I can complete my Platinum collection, but I'm hoping when it comes back, they'll have done what they should have done last time - include trailers, an actual making-of documentary, and not have a totally confusing menu system.
You're forgetting the obvious... they should include the actual OTV and not some muddled cut-down redrawn version!

He gave a mermaid her voice, a beast his soul, and Arabs something to complain about Arabian Nights (Unedited) Savages (Uncensored)
If it ain't OTV, it ain't worth anything!
I am happy to report I found a copy of SILLY SYMPHONIES Vol. 1 in very good condition, today at a local Half Price Books for 16.48! And just a few days ago, I saw one on eBay go for 45 bucks. Patience truly is a virtue.
Anne wrote:Two years ago, I bought The Fantasia Anthology for $80 on ebay. I'm really happy with it so I'm ok with the price I paid for it!!!
That's about as much as my mom paid for it when I got it for my birthday a few years ago. I really enjoy it and it is by far the best DVD collection I have. The price is definitely worth it.

It's good to hear that you found the Silly Symphonies set for a very reasonable price. I got my first DVD player in 2003 and missed out on the first two waves of WDT . Fortunately, around this time Costco was selling all seven editions in a box set called 'The Ultimate Disney Treasure Chest'. I think the price was around $120 and the contents are identical except for the tins and lithographs not being included.
I bought a like new beauty & the beast last year for 45 dollars. I also got a near mint condition snow white 6 months ago for only 32. both authentic. couldn't be more pleased.
The most I've ever spent on an OOP DVD was $35 on Beauty and the Beast and Snow White (each).
I guess depending on the DVD and how bad I wanted it, I'd cap my range at $50.
"Hip hop frightens you, doesn't it....Hmmm...Fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate. Hate leads to endlessly posting threads about stupid white people. Hmmmmm....."
I do the same thing as Albert, I put either the receipts inside the DVD cases or I put the price tag on the inside if I can't find the receipt, just to keep track of how much I spent.
Anyway, here are the DVDs I bought AFTER they went OOP and how much I paid for them (in no particular order):
-Snow White PE $16.99, Gamestop, complete w/ inserts (August 2005). This was my first ever DAC on DVD.
-Beauty & The Beast PE $12.99 at Gamestop, no slipcover or inserts, tiny scratches (October 2005), THEN in August 2007, I found a copy at FYE used with a slipcover and the inserts and the discs in mint condition for $26.99. (In other words, I spent around $40 for this DVD at the time). I have since traded in the copy from Gamestop to FYE and got $12.50 for it, so my grand total that I spent on this DVD is around $27.50. I figured since I had the extra copy laying around I would rather trade it in so somebody could buy it and it would actually get put to use rather than sitting there on my shelf collecting dust.
-Sleeping Beauty - 2 Disc SE $14.99 at Gamestop, no slipcover, no inserts, and the discs were lightly scratched (November 2005). In July 2007 I found a used copy at FYE for $24.99 that included the slipcover and inserts, and I got lucky again, since the discs were in mint condition. At the time, the total that I spent on this DVD (both copies combined) was $40. The same day I traded in my Gamestop-purchased copy of BatB to FYE, I also traded in my Gamestop-purchased copy of SB and got $10 for it. In total I spent $30 on this DVD.
-The Lion King PE $12.99 at Gamestop, mint condition, all inserts, no slipcover. My friend has since given me their slipcover since he has the DVD but is not a huge Disney fan.
-The Fox and the Hound: Gold Collection $12.99 at Gamestop, October 2006, complete with all inserts. I knew about the 25th AE that was released the same month, but I got the GC since there really isn't a big difference between the two.
-The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea $20.99 used at FYE.com, May 2007. I had wanted this since the PE of TLM came out and FYE.com had it used for $27.99 but they had a 25% off promotion on used DVDs. Of course I bought this before the SE of TLMII was announced.
-Peter Pan: Limited Issue $7.90 used at FYE.com, February 2008. I couldn't find my PE so I found the LI used online and got it as a cheap, temporary replacement. I have since found my PE. Luckily, I was also trying to collect all the LIs so it worked out in a way.
-Peter Pan: SE $12.99 ay Gamestop, March 2007. I saw screencaps of the SE compared to the PE somewhere (maybe it was the DVD review on here?), and I really liked the more vivid colors, so I got it.
-Peter Pan in Return to Neverland $12.99, January 2007 at Gamestop. I had seen it on Disney Channel about a month before, and I really liked it, so I bought it.
-101 Dalmatians: Limited Issue $9.99 used at Gamestop, December 2006. I got this transferred from another Gamestop with the help of fellow UDer BrotherBear, in the time period where nobody knew when the PE was going to finally be released. And of course, a few months later the PE was announced for the March 2008 release.
-Dumbo: 60th Anniversary Edition - $14.99 used at FYE, November 2007. I was torn between this edition and the Big Top Edition, but I ultimately decided to go for this one, because it included the sneak peek at the never-released Dumbo II
-Cinderella II: Dreams Come True (2002 Release) - $11.24 used at FYE.com, November 2007. They were having a 25% off used DVDs promotion so I figured why not.
-The Lion King II: Simba's Pride - 2 Disc SE $9.99 used at Gamestop, November 2005. I really loved this movie, so I was pleased to find this for such a cheap price, in mint condition with all inserts and the slipcover.
-Lady and the Tramp: Limited Issue $12.50 used at FYE, November 2006. They were having a "buy 2 used, get 25% off the third" so I just got this as the third used item.
SO there you have it.
Like many others, I would not pay more than the MSRP as well.
Glad to see I'm not the only one who keeps receipts inside DVD cases. My wife told me I was being obsessive compulsive, but you never know when you might get a damaged or factory defective disc.
I also buy most of my DVDs pre-owned and like to keep record of how much I saved off the MSRP.
I would never pay more than the retail price to own any OOP Disney DVD no matter how badly I wanted them unless I knew with absolute certainty that they'd never be reissued.
I am, however, still kicking myself for not hanging onto the Davy Crockett set. I hit a snag and needed the cash badly and took it back to Best Buy within a couple weeks after I bought it. Now it seems I'm going to have to shell out far above retail to regain that one unless I'm somehow able to barter for it.
Ditto on the Donald Treasure box sets, which I never got around to buying when they were released. Even as an animation fan, I haven't been interested in buying most of the other Treasure sets. But I've always liked Donald. I just never was able to afford them when they were being released.
"Condorman" is another OOP Disney title I really want to own badly for nostalgic reasons, but I would NEVER pay what it sells for on amazon. The lowest price on amazon currently is $113, and one idiot is trying to sell it for $475.
For you guys who are looking for some OOP titles but don't want to go through the hassle and often risk of buying them online, I would encourage you to read a consumer article I wrote years ago on buying used DVDs:
Even though it's on my ancient Geocities homepage which I haven't kept up with in years, I have at least tried to keep that article updated with current info.
Also, to whomever it was who said GameStop doesn't sell DVDs anymore... that's technically incorrect. Some select locations still have some inventory left. You'll have to inquire through an informed GS sales rep to find the location in your area. I had to drive 80 miles for one recently, but wow was it worth it. They were buy 1 get 2 free, and I came home with enough movies to last me for the next year, and didn't even spend that much.
I really liked your article. GameStop's selection used to be so good, and I don't think the one near me is stopping sales of DVDs, but their selection has really gone downhill since I started buying from them. I also haven't been to Blockbuster in SO long, the last time I went there was in 2006 or 2007. I bought a few used DVDs from there, but I wasn't too impressed with their selection. I will probably stop in there soon, since my friend got a $10 gift card that she wasn't going to use and decided to give it to me. I'll probably see if their selection has improved much, and if not, I'll just buy a new release DVD.
I prefer buying used from FYE/Suncoast/Saturday Matinee, etc..(they are all the same company) or fye.com, secondspin.com, wherehouse.com, suncoast.com (again, all owned by TransWorld Entertainment company). The reason being is because when you go to trade things in they thoroughly inspect the discs, and if there are small or light scratches (and I mean SMALL) they will still accept the trade in, because they have a CD/DVD resurfacing machine. I also like it because if there is a problem with the used product you buy in the store, you can go back and exchange it for another used copy (if there are any in the store), and if not, you can get a new copy and just pay the difference. If there's a problem with a used item you buy from their websites, you just e-mail them, and without question, they send you a new copy of the item and you don't even have to send your defective one back. Customer service is the best at these stores.
For the Haley Mills Parent Trap Vault Edition that DOES NOT have the lame tv sequel........ $25
Disney Channel died when they stopped airing movies with Haley mills (Parent Trap and Pollyanna) and fun adventure movies like Swiss Family Robinson. R.I.P. the REAL Disney Channel. Date of Death: When the shows became teenie bopperish.
Got Aladdin as planned, without paying a red cent, which is the magic of store credit.
While I was there, I couldn't help but keep my eyes on the old Davy Crockett Treasures release, which I found there for $45. I thought about getting it(I had $35 extra store credit dollars on me after Aladdin, and money of my own), but decided against it. Did I make the right decision?
Is it new? Is it used, but in good condition? If I had store credit, I wouldn't think twice about getting it. It really is a great series, and the Treasures set made me appreciate it even more.
However, if I had to pay the whole thing in cash, I don't know if I'd pay more than 40 bucks, plus tax. But 45 is still pretty good compared to the eBay prices.
The most I have ever paid for a OOP title is 90 (Canadian dollars) for Mickey in living color vol 1. The best deal I got was 25 (Canadian dollars) for the complete goofy. Both of those were bought in Dec of 08. Most of my OOP titles i paid between 20 and 30 for. I know a great used dvd store.
I paid 70 euros for a dvd set three times. The Ultimate Toy Box, The Fantasia Anthology and the Snow White Book Edition. All three were rare at the time. Not so much anymore, since the Toy Story movies were already re-released, and the other two are going to be released again this year. But bonus feature wise they're among the best Disney has to offer.
