THIS is why I vote!
http://www.rense.com/general83/whywomen.htm

The free stuff is like a sticker. Its not a bribe, a gift. A badge of practicing your American duty and right. A majority of the people getting their free Starbucks, got it and left. Or stood around and talked. I am sure they lost a lot of money doing it.

And there isn't a Krispy Kreme around me for 30 miles, though if their was, I'd get one. Starbucks I took advantage of because I was laid off almost a month ago. I don't get to splurge $6 on a coffee anymore and I missed my Starbucks. If you think that's bribery, I think you're wrong. I voted because I wanted to. Because I hope my vote makes all the difference. The free stuff, its a perk.

Word. I vote regardless of whether or not someone gives me a donut. I don't even have a Krispy Kreme near me in Boston, thank you very much Dunkin' Donuts monopoly.

Besides, I doubt there's that many people who were sitting on the couch saying "Well, I wasn't gonna vote, but since I can get free coffee..." Pretty much everyone's decided by this point. If someone wanted the free coffee, they could get it regardless of whether or not they voted.
"Ta ta ta taaaa! Look at me... I'm a snowman! I'm gonna go stand on someone's lawn if I don't get something to do around here pretty soon!"

To be honest, if I was in the USA right now, I'd put on a ridiculous histrionic American accent and say I voted (when I didn't and can't) just to get free stuff. :P

To thank people for voting? Isn't democracy God's Gift according to certain members of the US administration? What next? Will they be thanking people for breathing, another of God's gifts?

Oh and about the lines, I've never understood this. Again there's talk on the news of people waiting up to 4 hours to vote? Surely after all this time you'd had thought the greatest democracy on the planet would have worked out a workable system without hours of waiting?
Again, you've missed the point. The companies giving the free stuff are doing so because they are patriotic. They feel a sense of pride in providing something free to those who vote. It is a gift. It's not something they have to do, but, they want to do. It's not a bribe, and it's actually a good business practice, because it will get people into their stores.

Finally, the system is what it is. Voting is not something that just takes a second. It takes time. They can't just have one person working for every person voting.

I don't even know why I'm discussing this with you. You obviously have no idea what you are talking about, when you are sitting over in the U.K., and listening to news reports to get your information.

I voted, but I did not stop by Krispy Kreme for a free donut or Starbucks for a free coffee.

I heard Ben and Jerry's are giving out free ice cream.

Somewhat off topic, but I drove by a local busy intersection tonight and there in the median was a bunch of teenagers. People who aren't allowed to vote. A group of nearly 2 dozen. Some holding McCain signs and some holding Obama signs. All waving, smiling, talking, laughing, amongst eachother and intermingled together. They didn't take sides. They didn't make sour faces at the others. If more of our American youth act like that, then America is sure to have a fantastic future!

I agree 100%. I said "thank you" to the lady at Krispy Kreme who gave me my donut, and she said "thank you for voting". That made me feel good inside. And, the people in front of me in line purchased other items, so it is good business, because those people may not have stopped to get donuts today.

Apparently it's illegal to give the free food only to people who voted; apparently Starbucks changed their policy to they'll give a free cup of coffee to whoever asks for one. (some friends were going back and forth talking about this in an email)

I did the same thing. There was a pretty big line at Starbucks this afternoon when I was driving home.

although there is no Ben and Jerry's Or Krispy Kream donuts (unless you count the fundraiser donuts that are sold around town which are not included) I was near a Starbucks today but I wasn't in the mood for a coffee..

However at the voting booth there was a coupon for a Large Pizza for $8.99 plus tax when you vote you could take the coupon and bring it to domino's and it would be done in 10 minutes...
