I got the cheap version (this book isn't important enough to me or the series to get the Collector's Edition) and I had to say that I liked it. I think I enjoyed all the tales except maybe the first--which was a bit too saccharine for me (but still comedic, I guess). I won't give away details for those who've yet to read it, but I think The Warlock and the Hairy Heart was my favorite of all--followed by The Fountain of Fair Fortune. They were all good though, so I'm not saying anything bad about the rest. I almost wish she would make an entire book of tales like these (even outside the HP-verse); she's got a great voice. And I'm still looking forward to that encyclopedia--even if I do have to wait 10 years.
It's funny, I didn't even know it had already come out until Whoopi talked about it on The View this morning. Oh, and I think the US cover is gorgeous. This and the Philosopher's Stone are the only covers (US) that I've liked, coming from Mary GrandPre; I think she's better with chapter images. Of course, that's not counting the OotP and HBP Collector's Edition covers.

So, I just got home and unwrapped the really big amazon package and it really looks simply awesome!!
The "case", actually a kind of box that is made to look like it stood in the Hogwarts library is bound in what I think is real leather (smells like it) and has a skull and stuff engraved on it.
When you open it, you get the actual faksimile of the book that amazon won at the auction and it is beautiful. Again, leatherbound and with a big skull of metal and clasps on it and it comes in a nice red velvet bag.
The lid of the big case also has something like a flap in which the 10 special illustration prints are stored in an envelope.
It looks and feels absolutely amazing!!
So far I've only read the introduction by JKR herself in her handwriting which is already kind of funny and nice.
I haven't read any of the actual stories yet, but I will tomorrow. I am just so excited about how the money for the Special Edition was totally worth it.

I just received my copy of the Collector's Edition today. Agree with everything Dottie says. Holding it, it is like you had checked it out of the Hogwart's library. It has a feeling of authenticity, like you plucked it right out of the movie. It is well worth $100 and dare I say, worth more than that. I can bet it will be worth more than that in the coming years. I haven't read it at all. Just paged through it and looked at the prints.
My copy arrived today, too, and I feel exactly the same way. The detail on it is incredible, and I really hope that the Harry Potter production team designs the book exactly like this for the Deathly Hallows film(s). I'll be sitting down to read it properly soon, but I'm already impressed. It'd be awesome if the Harry Potter Encyclopedia is given this much lavish care in its presentation.
