Leonard Maltin also gave "Laserblast" 2.5 stars, ranking it equal to "Sophie's Choice". Don't take him too seriously. Anyhow, quit reckoning and start watching!

Yeah, some sequels can be just as great as the first one, although that being said i had the misfortune of watching the Princess Diaries 2 last night, and it totally stunk. Lol, i'm hoping that all the original cast comes back for Hairspray 2, coz in TPD2, it made it kinda more bearable. Zac Efron had better not think he's bigger than jesus and not do it....

Mike: "I wonder what stopped him from giving it the full 3 stars?"

Oy that Laserblast end credits rant about Leonard Maltin.....Other 2.5/4 Leonard Maltin films include:

The Princess Bride
Willy Wonka and the Chocolate factory
Muppet Treasure Island
The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956)
Treasure Planet
The Happiest Millionaire
Summer Magic
Babes in Toyland (1961)
The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band
The Black Cauldron
Mommie Dearest
Alien (up until recently)
Anastasia (1997)
The Broken Hearts Club
Hello, Dolly!

He also gave Half a Sixpence 1.5/4 and I love that film so it's not like I always agree with him anyway. Unfortunately Brendon, I don't really care much for the whole Rock Horror thing so, ya I probably won't watch it anytime soon.

I don't understand how anyone can be excited for this. We should expect more from these people, and they should expect more from us. We are making these people richer and richer paying to basically feed us the same thing over and over. I realize I don't have to go see it. But it is just frustrating to see people get excited over leftovers/reheats. What is there possibly left to say about Tracy's story??? This is not art, it is mass manipulation. This is essentially the equivalent of a cheapquel. Oh well, if subpar entertainment is your thing, enjoy...

Well, sugar bear, that's the wonderful thing about writing a new movie, it can be about pretty much anything.

yet more disturbing news on Perezhilton.com

Ready for Hairspray 2?

The first installment - which is an adaptation of the musical which is an adaptation of the original movie - did so well that New Line wants to cash in on a sequel. They've already wrangled up John Waters to write a sequel and brought back Adam Shankman to direct and choreograph, Neil Meron and Craig Zadan to produce, and Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman to write brand new songs.

They're hoping to reunite the first film's cast as well, a star-studded ensemble which included Christopher Walken, Zac Efron, Queen Latifah, Michelle Pfeiffer, James Marsden, Amanda Bynes, and newcomer Nikki Blonsky.

John Travolta, however - who donned ladies' clothes for the role of Edna Turnblad - says he won't be returning.

Cuz he likes to make dumb decisions like that!

The Scientologist told told Australia's Sunday Herald Sun, "I think once is enough. I did it and I did it well but I'm not a big sequel guy."

It seems like the actor suffered a bout of selective memory because we can recall a couple of Travolta films by the names of Look Who's Talking Too and Staying Alive.

Excuses excuses.

Too bad for him, cuz Hairspray grossed more than $200 million worldwide.

His loss!

I guess he's a smart guy but still... no Edna?

I'd like to see this happen..... only if most of the same cast are in it.

I did ask Alison Janey a couple times about it. The first time she hadn't even heard about it but said she really wanted to be in it. Later on she said it's "in the works" and that's all she knows.... Plus, she'll probably sing in it.... :P

Eh, the less John Travolta in it, the more I like it. Didn't care for him too much in the first one.

I propose: Alec Baldwin as Edna.

I'm sure its just a "negotiating ploy" so that he gets offered more money. Like has been pointed out, how many awful "Look Who's Talking..." films did he do?
Most of my Blu-ray collection some of my UK discs aren't on their database

well, these are the sequels he's done:

Staying Alive
Look Who's Talking Too
Look Who's Talking Now
Austin Powers in Goldmember
Be Cool
Wild Hogs 2

So saying he's "not a big sequel guy" is BS.

if you think about it though... if any broadway to film movie is going to get a sequel I could see this one making the most sence. It's supposed to be over the top but with a real messege. To me as long as the sequel is over the top, has a good messege, and has good music it'll be just fine.

Maybe it'll focus on the group in the late 60's and early 70's. Maybe Link will be drafted to vietnam?

there is not a single emoticon that would discribe my horror.
I have nothing against him, but replacing Travolta? Can't they send Tracy away from Baltimore like all the other bad sequels?

Hairspray 2: Rumored Plot

Apparently, we can expect Hairspray 2: Electric Boogaloo in 2010. According to Adam Shankman, director of the movie version of the Broadway musical (not to be confused with the original John Waters film), there’s a concept and an outline, and it’s “going out to writers.

In the Hairspray sequel, Tracy (Nikki Blonsky) and company will deal with the next wave of '60s music and '60s politics, and Link (Zac Efron) will “channel his inner Austin Powers.”

John Waters is involved, as is Queen Latifah. More importantly, it appears that John Travolta will not be back

Electric Boogaloo? Really New Line?

And we make fun of the names Disney gives to its DVD editions. One more thing: Mike Mayers shouldn't be doing Austin Powers; I wish i knew what he meant with that statement.

By the way thank you so much for posting Amy.

...you know "Electric Boogaloo" is a joke, right? From "Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo"? It's just a moniker bestowed upon sequels now.

And Link channeling his inner Austin Powers means he's going to be into the British invasion of the 60's. I think it's safe to say Mike MEYERS isn't going to be in this movie.

i knew about Meyers (sorry) not actually being in the movie, just the idea of that being tapped into is confusing.
