As I recall, Dick Tracy, Roger Rabbit, Nightmare Before Christmas, and maybe some others of the time were loosely referred to as Disney films just because it seemed general knowledge that Touchstone was from them. That's the way I rememeber it, anyway. And so, I have always considered those titles as Disney films. Ones that I found more confusing were films like Popeye, a fave film of mine, that is often called a Disney film and I know they were in on it, but what was it, a pairing with Paramount or something, wasn't it? Does it even say Disney anywhere on the DVD or anything? I do recall it saying something about Disney in the end credits though, if I remember correctly.

As for Hollywood, I can't for the life of me think of which popular films were released under the heading. Were the Ninja Turtles from Hollywood pictures? How about Arachnaphobia? If not, can anyone throw out some titles of blockbusters from Hollywood Pictures? I do remember first hearing about Hollywood pictures and that it was a new brand from Disney, and I remember thinking maybe it was going to replace Touchstone as their adult brand (Do films still get released under Touchstone? I haven't even kept track of that lately). Did one of them make "Gone Fishin'"? It was a flop I think, but I LOVED that movie and own the DVD. And, how about Wayne's World? Because I used to own a Wayne's World cap, and it said "Disney" in the tag! And can anyone tell me why Ace Ventura was doing a street show in Disney MGM Studios one summer when I visited it? Were those Hollywood or Touchstone films or something? It's an interesting subject. One thing I go buy is what I see at the Disney Store and in the parks, though I know some stuff, like Star Wars, is licensed. Always considered Roger Rabbit Disney though, and Dick Tracy and Nightmare Before Christmas as well.
I forgot all about the Ave Ventura stage show. I loved that.

I heard that Hollywood Pictures was supposed to make teen/horror films, whereas with Touchstone, the distributed films were just generally more adult yet had less of a niche audience. However, since films like Evita and The Joy Luck Club supposedly got released through Hollywood Pictures eventually, I'm not entirely certain of that, to tell the truth. And as others have said, there are films still being made by Touchstone, though not as much. And apparently Hollywood Pictures has been resurrected and now distributes genre films (which is perhaps where I got confused about the whole teen/horror aim).

Wayne's World and Ace Ventura don't seem to have any tie to Disney as far as their production is concerned. Maybe Paramount and Warner Bros respectively licensed the two films to Disney for theme-park use at one point?

To sum up blackcauldron85's question, Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment does not release Touchstone, Miramax, or Hollywood Pictures films under the Disney DVD brand.

A few years ago, everything used to be released by "Buena Vista Home Entertainment," so if you look at the fine print on Disney DVDs from 3 years ago or more, you will notice that it was actually from Buena Vista. Disney did away with the Buena Vista image since it had gotten too confusing. In its place, they created Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment. Content from Disney's other film divisions are released on their own home video line, such as Touchstone Home Entertainment. In addition, they created a separate line for ABC TV seasons released on DVD and Blu-Ray as well. The first few seasons of shows like Lost, Ugly Betty, and even Scrubs were all on Buena Vista Home Entertainment, but are now on ABC Home Entertainment.

Great- thanks everyone, especially Alex! For some reason, I had thought that everything was recently lumped under WDHE.

Bumping this thread after aqcuiring the "making of" book for Dick Tracy (for free at a used book store, pretty cool). On the back cover it says "Here is your exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the Walt Disney Pictures smash hit directed by and staring Warren Beatty and featuring Madonna, Al Pachino and a star-studded supporting cast." The VHS box art like credits also say "Walt Disney Pictures presents". No reference to Touchstone. The book's copyright/release date is June 1990 (same as the movie's release), but the text would have been written earlier.

So just like in other pre-release advertising material (like this trailer found on the Honey, I Shrunk the Kids tape: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dAHj3IsSuT0), Tracy is a Disney movie, not Touchstone. That VHS release was on March 16 1990, just 3 months before the movie's release. Not sure why the change was made, but it was after the McDonald's tie-in and Roger Rabbit cartoon addition were agreed upon and the movie still had it's premier in Disney World anyway. Media reports called it a Disney release regardless.

Tracy was 100% "Disney" until just before the premier. So ya, that's my long winded explanation for why I still would consider it such. :P
