How scared can a person be just at the sight of a knife that you already know the guy's carrying because you heard what the Queen said? And you know he didn't want to do it, so you already know she's going to get away somehow. And you know that no main characters, especially with their names in the title, are ever going to be hurt badly, let alone killed, this early in the movie.
Sleeping Beauty had a lot more build up. And more mystique. And would have the protagonists talking about the evil force(s) without seeing them in the same place. Which again is how the movie actively accessed your imagination without being too obvious about it. The characters were valid, the fairies - so you trusted all they were trying to tell you through suggestion about Maleficent and her evil.
