Brother Bear

Well, me personally love Phill Collin's music. However, I sometimes feel that he song's are too full and/or overpowering. I mean, his song's usually sound like a full rock band playing (which I'm sure it does) but most of Disney's song's are not like that.

Example --

I just can't wait to be king -- While having ton's of instrument's and nice music, the song seem's to not over power the film.

Two Worlds -- This song, to me, is meant to be played on the radio. I know it fit's in with the movie and all, but still. The song takes focus away of the animation. Atleast in my view..

Does any of the above make sense?

Responding to what Bella Notte said, yes, Tarzan was a good movie and the songs worked well with the story, but that was one movie. Disney has tried to do other movies with characters not singing (Toy Story 1 & 2, Return to Neverland, Cinderella 2) and it just hasn't worked as well. And if you think about it, which movies are more successful and memorable? The musicals like Beauty and the Beast or Little Mermaid? Or the "non-musicals" like Toy Story 2 and Tarzan?
Not to say these aren't great movies, but I find that the music in them is lacking the same "feel" and emotion.

im excited about Brother Bear, but.... i dont really like phil collins so that's the only thing in Brother Bear that im not looking forward.

I agree! When I saw Tarzan and the gorilla started the song, I thought "Uh oh, here it comes..." then Phil kicked in and I said "Oh, I can handle this!" Musicals are okay, but aren't my favorite. Music in the background is alright though.

I was mainly using Tarzan as an example because you mentioned Phil Collins. In general, I usually don't care for any characters that sing. Like Maerj, I'm not a huge fan of musicals (with the exception of Moulin Rouge!

) and I just prefer the music to be in the backgound. Although, I LOVE The Lion King, one of my least favorite parts is where Simba sings, "I can't wait to be King."

Beauty and the Beast and The Little Mermaid are also two of my favorites but that is mainly because of their overall stories and the animation rather than the musical aspects.

I thought the music in Tarzan was very emotional, more so than any movie I've seen in a long time, especially "You'll Be in My Heart."

But these are all just my personal preferences.

Each movie influences everyone differently and everyone has different parts that they enjoy.

Agreed.

I Just Can't Wait to be King was a fun song sung by an eager and hopeful character as he moved through stages of life. It was a song that really had to be sung by Simba and not "professionally". The focus was on Simba growing up and the solo was a huge part of that scene.

Two Worlds is played during the opening sequence of the film, when showing us how Tarzan lost his parents and Kala and Kerchak (Kerchek?) lost their son.

I think you are thinking of the song "Son of Man".

I understand your point, but those examples actually perfect examples of why they did work as they were.

I Just Can't Wait to be King was a fun song sung by an eager and hopeful character as he moved through stages of life. It was a song that really had to be sung by Simba. The focus was on Simba growing up and the solo was a huge part of that scene.

On the otherhand, Two Worlds was merely accompanyment (sp?) to an event we were witnessing: Tarzan learning about the modern world. He couldn't have sung it because of his limited vocabulary, and even if he could have it would not have fit with the musical style that had been set. Here teh focus was on the difference of Tarzan and Jane's worlds, and our focus stays on them...not on the music.

i feel your pain, tarzan songs we're ok, it could of done without them

From the official Phil Collin's website:

Phil goes to LA in September to put the Brother Bear soundtrack to the movie and to work on several foreign language versions of the soundtrack. He will also be doing some very long lead time press work for the album/film.

A single from the movie soundtrack will be released in mid to late September and the soundtrack album will be released in late October.

Work is also ongoing on remixing several of Phil's studio albums for surround sound releases.

One thing I absolutely hate about Disney music is that whenever Phil Collins or Randy Newman does the score, no matter how much it sucks (A Bug's Life!) they get absolutely all the attention: their name is everywhere, their face is everywhere, and why? Composers to previous Disney films have done just as good if not better than these two, and yet nobody seems to even know who they are! I think that Phil Collins being a regular "famous music person" seems to milk the publicity for all it's worth: i recently saw the single for "You'll be in my Heart" will Collins on the cover, and no where did it mention that the song was for Tarzan.

Brother Bear to be released on Saturday, November 1? November 1 is the day after Halloween.

"The next animated feature for Walt Disney is BROTHER BEAR, starring the voices of Joaquin Phoenix, Michael Clarke Duncan and Rick Moranis. According to the film's official website and various theater schedules, the film is slated for release on Friday, November 7, 2003. But according to our industry source, Disney is thinking of changing their strategy and doing something unprecedented: releasing a major studio film on a Saturday."

"...This is why a Saturday, November 1 roll out for BROTHER BEAR is starting to make sense to Disney brass. By opening their picture the night after Halloween, Disney might stand to gain additional exposure from the media alerted to the unusual release day. As well, it doesn't hurt that kids will be more inclined to watch a movie after they've gorged themselves on candy...and parents can rest for a couple of hours after running around after their tots the night before."

hmmmm...interesting strategy. I kinda like it actually. Disney has an additional weekend to bank in on that gorged box office

Sorry to be really "nitpicky" about this, but the plural of "moose" isn't "mooses" or "meese": one moose is the same as a whole group of moose. simple mistake...but I just couldn't let it pass! Sorry!

i love and and dont love this strategy cuz its not opening against thre matrix

but it only has a 2 day weekend although satrdays r strong days for kids movies but sunday is usally weak for movies in general so it only has 2 days to first establish it self to the public ang make lots and lots of money

but i guess i actually like this idea has a way better chance than opening on nov 7

I think it all depends on the scene and the song. I think each style can work. I love disney's musicals, the songs just bring magic to the movies, and I loved the Tarzan soundtrack, In fact it was the first disney soundtrack, that I owned.

While I think all the other songs worked with Phil Collins singing, I really think "You'll be in My Heart", should have been completely sung by the mother. It wouldn't make the movie, a flat out musical, and IMO would have made the bit more tender and intimate, and there is certainly nothing wrong with a mother singing to her child (not that you were neccessarily saying that). It almost seems like Phil is steeling the spotlight. Besides Phil has his own version of the song that is great, and prefered by me. He should have just let the mother sing the entire disney version...

I think a mix of character sung songs, and backround narative songs, would be cool.

Sorry I know it is a bit off topic, now that the focus has gone back to Brother Bear, but just thought I'd mention it.
