This is what scares me with having a big DVD collection; the medium change. At least with the new high-def players they are backwards compatible and can play regular DVDs. However I still don't think that older movies can utilize these new systems to their full extent and for the time being regular DVDs should suffice. The only movies that probably do look great on the new systems are those that were shot in digital like Star Wars Episode II and Episode III. Again, older movies like when Star Wars Episode IV came to DVD in that first set, it still has problems with the sound and something that can't be fixed because that's the nature of the original film.
Anyway, I missed the first three platinum editions (Snow White, Beauty and the Beast, Lion King) and the Fantasia Anthology, so I'd welcome any of these on the market in the coming years. I also do hope the following get special editions:

The back channels were switched in the 2004 release of A New Hope. Something that should have been fixed long before it got sent out.
I'm not worried about replacing my DVDs with HD DVD/Blu-ray versions however I do plan to buy High Def movies soon. I'll probably just replace a few, and mainly buy new releases. However older movies can look great on the new formats. Sure new releases will generally look better, but film is a higher res than either HD DVD or Blu-ray so improvements can be seen if the transfer is done correctly.

I think A New Hope sounds great on DVD, and most people wouldn't even be aware of any problem with the sound if Internet sites hadn't run stories about it - in fact, I remember when it first came out, and many reviewers gave it a glowing write up for the soundtrack!
As said above, film is a higher resolution medium, so anything made on film should look stunning on Blu Ray. The oldest film I have so far is Superman The Movie, and that is incredible. The detail, particularly in close up shots is very impressive. I don't have a huge display, about a 28" LCD widescreen, but I have it wallmounted above my laptop, and so I'm sometimes sat close up to the screen watching stuff, and the difference between Standard Def DVD and Hi Def DVD is very noticeable. I went back and watched a SD DVD after watching a run of Hi Def films, and couldn't get over how noisy the picture was and how many artefacts there were.

The work put into the 2004 Star Wars box set was amazing. Personally I have never seen the films look and sound that good. The sound issue in A New Hope never bothered me, but it is there. Still something that should have been fixed before release. I hope eventually one day the time is took to restore the Original Star Wars Trilogy (no added CGI, etc...). That would make a great Blu-ray release.
All films generally can look better in High Def, if the transfer is done correctly. There are a few HD DVD/Blu-ray titles that look no better than a upconverted DVD because of the transfer used.
