Mickey and brooms are more iconic, live action just wont do any justice to Fantasia.

I agree. I don't feel Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland is a live action remake of the Disney animated movie, but rather a new adaptation to the original stories. Just as Batman Begins and Dark Knight are adaptations of the comics, not remakes of the last films.

Now if they put someone in a Mickey Mouse suit and have them running around, that would be a remake. This is just another adaptation of the original story. No offense, but people, media, critics, etc need to get their heads our of their arses and realize its okay to adapt an existing story WITHOUT it being an official remake of another movie.

It appears that Jay Baruchel("Tropic Thunder," "Knocked Up") is up for the part of the title role in Walt Disney Pictures live action "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" according to Variety.

The production will work from a screenplay by Lawrence Konner and Mark Rosenthal that Matt Lopez did a rewrite on. The film takes place in modern day New York(don't all movies?), where Nicholas Cage will play a wizard in search of a new apprentice. Frequent Mouse collaborator Jon Turteltaub will direct Jerry Bruckheimer's production.

Does anyone know when this is scheduled to be released? IMDb says 2009 - is that likely? I know IMDb isn't reliable, it just doesn't seem enough time... And I would hate for ANYTHING to compete with the Princess and the Frog!

It's seems as if it hasn't even begun filming yet, so I would say it's wrong. I bet they are filming it in NY this summer and it'll be released for Christmas 2010. Afterall Disney also has the Christmas Carol film coming out this winter.

They will also probably add a feature for it on the Fantasia PE that's being released in March 2010.

Did anybody know that Warner Bros. is planning to release a movie called 'The Spook's Apprentice'? The similarity in titles is truly unfortunate. And it's being directed by Kevin Lima - the director of Enchanted!

I'm not familiar with the source material for the Warner Bros. movie. I hope it ends up looking like Warner is piggybacking off Disney, and not the other way around.

It's a concept by Tim Burton and was supposed to be made at Disney. Don't know how/why/when it switched to WB.

How do you know it's lifting off of Disney? The only similar thing now is the title, which is subject to change.

Just because someone works for Disney on several projects doesn't mean they're chained to the company for the rest of their life.

I've probably said this a few times and I hate that I have to, but for most people, working for Disney is a JOB. Sure, it can be a job they enjoy and one where they're proud of the work, but at the end of the day, it is still just a job. And when that job (or contract) is done and another one comes up elsewhere, they're free to take it, regardless what studio it is. They're not permanently bound to only work for Disney, or to turn down jobs because they want to remain in Disney's good graces should Disney want them for another job later. That's stupid and for any person to wait around for Disney to offer them a job again because they worked for them before will not put money in their bank account or food on their table.

Look at Will Finn. He's worked for Disney, Don Bluth, DreamWorks, and Filmation during his 20-odd years in the business. He started working in animation on Bluth's The Secret of NIMH, worked on a couple Filmation movies (Pinocchio and the Emperor of the Night and Happily Ever After), spent much of the 90s at Disney, left the company to direct The Road to El Dorado for DreamWorks, came back and was a director for Home on the Range, and went back to DreamWorks again to work on Over the Hedge and Madagascar 2.

Anyway, sorry for the semi-rant, and I'm sorry that it seems to stem from just your post, kbehm. It stems from a lot of posts and attitudes I've seen, but this was probably just the tipping point for me. I just hate when people assume that if someone - be it an actor, an animator, a director, just ANYONE - leaves Disney to work for another company that they're suddenly "traitors" because they're working for the enemy. It's not a religion or a club or some fraternity where you pledge loyalty to them and only them. It's a frickin' job.

Peter Sciretta of Slashfilm is reporting that Alfred Molina will be cast as an evil sorcerer opposite Nick Cage(Sorcerer) and Jay Baruchel(Apprentice) in Walt Disney Pictures "The Sorcerer's Apprentice." One of Disney's favorite Cast Members, Jon Turteltaub is directing the modern day take on the classic animated sequence in "Fantasia" that Disney fans have loved so much. Will it prove magical?

Hmm I'm still a tad sketchy bout this remake...the orignal is so beloved and most remembered when it comes to Fantasia. I can't even see how they can make this short story feature length.

Least they're not simpely remaking it with a CGI Mickey Mouse/Nicolas Cage, Alfred Molina (Doc Ock) is a superb actor and knows how to handle a villain's emotion (look at Spider Man 2) Let's hope for the best.

Maybe we'll see some refrence to Fantasia and the Orignal Sorcerer's Apprentice and I sense we'll see trailer with Fantasia/2000's Platinums.
