Yeah, I agree it was good in terms of bonuses, but the picture quality was pretty bad. Besides, Inga said that a 2-disc "Dumbo" might be on the way, so...Tangela wrote:Well, even though not 2-disc nor "Special", Dumbo got a pretty decent release, right Luke?Joe Carioca wrote:Awesome news Inga! Hmm... any news on the special edition of "Dumbo" or any other film?

I don't know if it will be digitally restored (actualy, the film doesn't need it, since it is stored in computers), but I'm sure Disney will give as an anamorphic THX certified transfer. Can't wait.... "Pocahontas" Gold Collection sucked badly...Lady wrote:does anyone know if the 2-disc pocahontas special edition will be digitally restored?

May? Well, I'm sad to read it's been pushed back. But then again, after all the $$ I'll have gone through once the Holiday season ends this is probably a blessing in disguise. I have held out this long for a Lilo & Stitch SE, another few months won't matter much.Squirrel wrote:Great news! I'm really looking forward to the 2-Disc Lilo & Stitch. Pocahontas stands to benefit as much as any title from digital restoration. I expect a dramatic improvement in picture - as the current disc is quite grainy and a couple of steps down from the LD, I'm told.
On the other hand, Lilo & Stitch can use the same transfer. I'm quite excited about these new 2-disc sets, and Dumbo would be cool too. That could benefit from some transfer work as well, even if it was only released a couple of years ago.
Tomorrow's NY Times has a pretty interesting article about studios releasing something and remastering it a couple of years later. They cite the Kubrick Collection and Lawrence of Arabia, though the complaints about the later are mostly exaggerated. The Godfather films are apparently being remastered for their individual re-release next year. Anyway, while no Disney films were mentioned in the article, it seems on topic.

The PAL Pochahontas have very little grain. I probably would have noticed it, but I had an eagle eye on the transfer after reading so many bad reviews of the R1 release.Luke wrote:Pocahontas stands to benefit as much as any title from digital restoration. It was my understanding the Godfather films couldn't be improved due to a combination of poor film stock and incorrect storage condition. What is of interest to Disney readers is that Scott McQueen is no longer in charge of restoration at Disney (and apparently this position no longer exists). This could be bad news, but I think it's just because they sub-contract their restoration work out these days.Luke wrote:Tomorrow's NY Times has a pretty interesting article about studios releasing something and remastering it a couple of years later. Well, they talk about that and one guy who worked on the original DVDs transfer thinks they did a pretty good job since the materials were in such poor condition, but acknowledges that it could be a lot better. Essentially, the blame is laid on Paramount (who else?) for providing sub-par materials to work with. But the article makes it clear that next year's releases will have new transfers.2099net wrote:It was my understanding the Godfather films couldn't be improved due to a combination of poor film stock and incorrect storage condition. As for Dumbo, Joe is right - the picture quality is rather subpar - although there's a pleasing amount of extras, more could be done, no doubt. Improved picture quality would be at the top of my wishlist, though, and I'd gladly repurchase it in a 2-disc set.
I split the specifically 9/11 posts into their own thread in Off-Topic, though the line on whether to keep or leave some was blurry. Though I think that has run its course, short of voicing displeasure with comments...that remains an open thread as is.
Well, just as a side note, Buena Vista Home Entertainment have just announced a 'fully loaded' 2 disc set of Comic Book: The Movie.
What's that you ask? "Exactly" I reply. It never even got released theatrically! And while I'm up for getting it, the appeal must be somewhat limited - more limited than the appeal for a 2 disc Rescuers set for example.
I do think Disney will release 2 disc sets of all their movies before DVD 'dies', just to get as many sales and resales and money as possible from the format.
If somebody asked me what films I would think had the least material for a 2 disc set, I would list Dumbo near the top. Especially after the somewhat loaded "Anniversary" release. But it's apparently getting one. I'm sure most if not more of the 'lesser', more modern films has more material in the Disney archives...
I think that perhaps the only exception will be the partwork films. I would suggest these should be released as duel releases - the movies on disc 1 and the supplements on disc 2:
Adventures of Icabod and Mr Toad/Fun and Fancy Free
Melody Time/Make Mine Music
Saludos Amigos/The Three Caballeros

there so much they could add to the dumbo disc set........
think about what made the snow white disc so great!
the historical and retrospective side of the studio really expressed the impact of this film. some ideas for supplements to add to the preexisting supplements:
original theatrical trailer and every single rerelease trailer! plus celebrity hosts putting the disney company's history at the time into perspective (this is one of my favorite parts of the snow white dvd)
deleted story ideas and unfinished segments (i know there weren't any animated segments NOT added in, but the story had to be reworked a couple of times which means there are story board sequences out there that were never in the movie)
a HUGE collection of vitual galleries
radio spots for every release (like the vault disney line did for swiss family robinson......including the release radio spots!)
script excerpts
production notes
as much as i hate to say it....a new set top game
song demos (i know they have these....i've heard them......they may not be deleted songs, but i've heard recordings from when they were demoing the songs for this film)
biographies and interviews with the vioce cast. if they are no longer alive, then perhaps filmographies and clips from their movies with narration by film historians/family.
a "new" look at dumbo 2 with some of the deleted 3D material that was made for the film, and the new perspective on the film
anything else others can think of? feel free to add.....maybe someone at disney will get a good idea from this board and i say let them take whatever they want as long as they start putting out consistently GREAT dvds.
