News on Torchwood and SJ Adventures from this month's Doctor Who Magazine:
Torchwood Episode One will be screened on Sunday 22nd October, with a simultaneous broadcast on BBC1 and BBC3. Then the second episode will be screened immediately afterwards on BBC3 only, and the series continues on BBC3 every Sunday night. The whole series will then be shown on BBC1 in the New Year.
Thank God I've got digital TV, or else I'd be calling for riots on the street. It does seem a bit pointless having the opening episode on BBC1 and then not showing the others for 3 or 4 months (especially as the DVDs will be available before the BBC1 showings?)
The 60-minute Sarah Jane Adventures pilot is currently being filmed, with a full series of 10 half-hour episodes being filmed in the New Year for CBBC.
A nice 2 disc set then for the series, or a three disc set with extras?

When then BBC Torchwood site went live today by mistake the full episode guide for Series 1 went up too. It quickly went down after the mistake was spotted, but not before some kind soul saved a copy. So read on at your own risk...

EPISODE 1: 'Everything Changes' by Russell T Davies
When Torchwood arrives on the scene of a brutal murder, WPC Gwen Cooper's burning curiosity is challenged. Their attitude, their approach and their technology is at odds with everything she believes in. But investigating the investigators leads her into a dark, paranoid world she never imagined existed.

EPISODE 2: 'Day One' by Chris Chibnall
An alien addicted to sex is let loose on Cardiff's nightlife. Torchwood must track down the creature's new host and in doing so, confront a violent new form of love in the 21st century.

EPISODE 3: 'Ghost Machine' by Helen Raynor
Torchwood discovers a machine that allows them to view the ghosts that walk among us. Using it, prompts Owen to investigate an unsolved crime - one that could change all their futures.

EPISODE 4: 'The Trouble With Lisa' by Chris Chibnall
There's a dark secret in the basement of the Hub. Even Jack is unaware of it, but Ianto knows. And he'll go to any lengths, sacrifice anything and anyone, to protect what's down there.

EPISODE 5: 'Small Worlds' by Peter J. Hammond
Jasmine is a withdrawn but intelligent child whose new 'friends' exploit her suppressed anger, and while investigating this, Jack encounters elemental enemies from his past that are determined to harm those closest to him.

EPISODE 6: 'Countrycide' by Chris Chibnall
Upon entering an apparently deserted village in the Brecon Becons, the Torchwood team is separated. Finding his people are the prey in a savage game of cat and mouse Jack faces a team of ruthless hunters far more skilled in surviving outside the confines of the city than he.

EPISODE 7: 'Greeks Bearing Gifts' by Toby Whithouse
Tosh gains the ability to read the minds of those closest to her but as she becomes party to their darkest secrets, she realises not only is this is a powerful curse, but one impossible to break.

EPISODE 8: 'They Keep Killing' by Paul Tomalin & Dan McCulloch
Using alien technology to interrogate the victims of a serial killer, Gwen learns that the common link is dangerously close to home. And the resurrection device has a deadly secret of its own.

EPISODE 9: 'Invisible Eugene' by Jacquetta May
A hit-and-run victim, Eugene, was a bit of a nobody, and always convinced that aliens were coming to Earth, specifically to retrieve technology in his possession. Now Gwen finds herself drawn into his world and realises Eugene may still be helping her locate the 'aliens' - despite him being dead.

EPISODE 10: 'Combat' by Noel Clarke
The team discovers a ring who are kidnapping Weevils - wild alien creatures that have come through the Rift and are hiding on Earth - which leads Owen down a dark path to confront the future of his own existence.

EPISODE 11: 'Out of Time' by Cath Tregenna
A small passenger plane from the 1950's flies through the rift and lands in Cardiff 2006. Torchwood is drawn into strong personal relationships as they help the three temporal immigrants adapt to contemporary life.

EPISODE 12: 'Captain Jack Harkness' by Cath Tregenna
Transported back to the Blitz, Jack and Tosh find themselves facing a dark secret from Jack's past, one he hoped and believed had been buried for good.

2099net says: YAY! Jack back in the Blitz!

EPISODE 13: 'Apocalypse' by Chris Chibnall
The Rift is violently fracturing further, and Jack realises that Torchwood is destined to be drawn into one vast battle that will leave nothing and no one at unchanged...

After all the speculation regarding the "adult" nature of Torchwood, first reviews indicate it will include swearing and gore. Reportedly, the "F" word is said several times in the first episode. However, John Barrowman has indicated in an interview, Captain Jack's behaviour will be more toned down than other members of the ensamble cast. One reason for this is Jack is always a gentlemen around women, and the other is "we are aware the character will be returning to Doctor Who once Torchwood finishes".

Doctor Who 2007 (and upcoming spin-offs) thread V2

Post by 2099net »

Due to an apparent flux in the time-space vortex, the previous thread has been 'erased' (probably by a Reaper)*

So I've put this up. If the old thread can be found, I will merge them together.

Oh poo. The entire "Escapay converting to being a Whovian" was in there.

Anyways, I didn't wanna get spoiled for Torchwood, so I didn't read any of it, though I was greatly tempted...

Watched "School Reunion" at 8, followed by "The Ribos Operation". Two doctors in one night, woohoo!

It was kind of jarring though. Cause the entire time I was watching Ribos, I just kept thinking, "K9 dies 30-odd years later!" And two doctors with long brown coats. Wonder what would the fans think if Tennant decides to start wearing a long scarf.

There's actually FOUR K-9s

K-9 Mk 1 remained on Gallifrey with Leela
K-9 Mk 2 (in the Ribos Operation) remained on E-Space with Romana*
K-9 Mk 3 was built by the Doctor and sent to Sarah Jane as a Gift (seen in K-9 and Company, The Five Doctors and School Reunion)
K-9 Mk 4 is shown at the end of School Reunion and will be (briefly) in Sarah Jane Adventures

* Later non-TV fiction (the Big Finish Audio plays and the Virgin/BBC Books have K-9 Mk2 on Gallifrey with Romana, who has returned from E-Space and is the President of Gallifrey. The canonity of the spin-off media is debateable.

OK - This month's Doctor Who Magazine is full of information. There truely has never been a better time to be a Doctor Who fan!

Doctor Who Series 3 Information
Not a lot of information, as the production team are still playing things close to their chests. However there is confirmation of the casting of Mark Gatiss and Thelma Barlow I reported before, as well as some new casting names.

Escapay, get your dancing elephant ready. Ardel (Father Ted, My Hero) O'Hanlon has been added to the list of guest stars for series 3!

Julie Gardner, one of the show's executive producers has been promoted within the BBC to become "Head of Drama, Commisioning" while still keeping her current job as head of drama at BBC Wales.

Doctor Who Series 2 DVD Information
The full details of the commentary participants has been revealed. Note: In most cases these are different to the commentaries they appeared on the BBCi transmissions and are still available to download from the BBC Doctor Who site ( http::www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho ) Sadly, all indications are these original commentaries will not be present on the boxset. One episode per disc has the option of viewing the commentary while watching the episode.

Eighth Doctor News

While Doctor Who will not return to our TV screens until Easter 2007 (apart from the Christmas Special) the radio station BBC 7 has commissioned a series of audio adventures starring Paul McGann. Although the Eighth Doctor has only appeared on screen for little over an hour, there have been over 50 hours of Big Finish audio plays produced featuring the 8th Doctor! This series due to start on New Year's Day 2007 will feature Sheridan (Two Pints of Lager…, Grown-Ups) Smith as new companion Lucie, as well as a host of British stars – Una Stubbs, Stephen Gately, Claire Buckfield, Bernard Cribbins, Nigal Havers, Timothy West, Roy Marsden and, er…, Anita Dobson. A Cybermen and a Dalek story are also promised.

The episodes will be available for listening worldwide on the BBC Radio player for a week after their initial broadcast.

Sarah Jane Adventures

As well as the 1 hour pilot (currently filming) the series for later in 2007 will be 10 half-hour episodes. (So the whole series is just the right size for a 2 disc DVD set!). Gareth Roberts (co-writer) drops a few hints in the Production Notes column when he says about SJA "The stories and characters have started to come to life. New monsters are born, some familiar monsters are reborn." Strongly implying that some old Doctor Who monsters will be in the series.

Torchwood

John Barrowman has revealed he's had to turn down roles in the West End for three musicals due to his Torchwood/Doctor Who commitments – The Sound of Music, Wicked and Spamalot. Torchwood will be premiered on Sunday October 22nd, athough now it doesn't look like there will be a BBC 1 broadcast when it is shown on BBC 3. There will be a BBC 2 repeat sometime later in the week.

Here's an interview in The Times newspaper with Russell T Davies and John Barrowman about Torchwood.

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0, ... 58,00.html

It also confirms next Sunday's slot, and the BBC 2 repeat. No mention of BBC 1.

My word, next Sunday? This is a little out of the blue isn't it! I wasn't expecting it for a while yet, and aside from the 'coming soon' trailers there hasn't been much of an oompah!

I was expecting this to be on BBC1, but it doesn't look like it will be so!

Found it! It was only a few posts down actually!

The 2007 Doctor Who (and spin-offs) Thread

Anyways, to recap my Doctor Who viewings:

Friday, as I said already, watched "School Reunion" and "The Ribos Operation".

Sunday was "Drive to Rutgers to see Kram and Jane" day, and I was able to watch the following on the way:
-"The Lion", Episode 1 of The Crusade
-"Day of Armageddon", Episode 2 of The Dalek Master Plan
-The Androids of Tara: Parts 1 and 2

When we came back home, I channel surfed and happened to come upon Masterpiece Theatre. Turned out it was Casanova, with David Tennant. Totally forgot it was on that night, I was planning on just blindbuying the DVD. Watched the rest of it, now I know I'm gonna buy the DVD today (Tuesday). When Casanova was finished, I watched the rest of The Androids of Tara and went to bed.

Really want the rest of the Key to Time DVDs (stories 99, 100, and 102), but of the stores I've gone to in the past few days, none of them carry them so I'll likely have to order them online.

Warning: The Power of Kroll really is shit. It's has a little bit of everything people laugh about old Doctor Who in it. Oh well, one dud story a season isn't that bad I suppose.

You may like The Pirate Planet out of the remaining ones the best, as its written by Douglas 'Hitchhikers Guide' Adams and is similarly zany in places (and he has a HUGE imagination - some of the concepts in the story are mindblowing, even if perhaps the actual story itself is not the best presentation of those ideas).

The only non-specific Torchwood spoilers I've been able to find from the recent Press Screening:
Torchwood: As promised, five nuggets from the Torchwood premiere:
1. It is aimed at an adult audience, and as if to prove that, we get our first F-bomb just two minutes in.
2. Captain Jack originally disappeared on January 21, 1941.
3. The Cardiff Torchwood building is actually Torchwood 3.
4. Torchwood 4 has gone missing.
5. A gay snog features in the episode - but Captain Jack isn't involved.
Torchwood airs on BBC Three from October 22

Good News Everybody! from Monday's Media Guardian
Torchwood scores digital first

Jason Deans, broadcast editor
Monday October 23, 2006
MediaGuardian.co.uk

Torchwood: tied for third place with BBC1's Wide Sargasso Sea on 2.4m viewers

BBC3's Doctor Who spin-off Torchwood launched with 2.4 million viewers last night - believed to be the biggest ever multichannel audience for a UK-originated, non-sports programme.
The heavily promoted BBC3 drama, about a bunch of alien hunters in Cardiff, is thought to be second only to an episode of Friends, broadcast on Sky One six years ago, which attracted 2.8 million viewers.

Multichannel ratings are traditionally dominated by live football and US imports such as The Simpsons, so the success of the homegrown Torchwood is a real boon for BBC3.

The BBC digital channel's previous best is thought to be the 1.9 million viewers who tuned into an episode of Little Britain in October 2004.

Last night's first episode of Torchwood was the third most watched show on any UK network in its timeslot, between 9pm and 9.50pm, beaten only by ITV1's Prime Suspect and Channel 4 movie The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

Torchwood also tied for third place with BBC1 drama Wide Sargasso Sea on 2.4 million viewers.

A second instalment of the new BBC3 drama, shown back to back with the opening episode, attracted 2.3 million viewers from 9.50pm - an encouraging result, suggesting that Torchwood held most of its audience over nearly two hours.
Given how small the UK audience is compared to the US, and how little people generally watch the non-network channels (BBC3's average audience share is normally below 2% of the total viewing audience). Torchwood's triumph cannot be understated. Its about the same viewing figures as an episode of Battlestar Galatica on Sci-Fi in the US, in a country with 1/6th of the population!

I bet BBC1 is kicking itself for bottling out of showing it now. Plonkers. Just because it's not "conventional" enough for them.

So it looks like we can be expecting more Torchwood for 2007 and 2008! :D

Update: Here's the BBC News story, which states the audience share was around 13%

Never had a chance to reply to this on Friday...

Watched "The Girl in the Fireplace" and I think I've found my favorite episode ever. Ever. Nothing can top it, at least IMO. Of course, that either means the rest of the season will be a letdown or I'll find a better episode later on, lol.

It's great to hear that Torchwood was a hit! Maybe that means we'll see it on SciFi in first-quarter 2007, followed by the 2007 Doctor Who in the fall! BTW, is there any more news about the Doctor's new companion for 2007? And woohoo, Thermoman will be on Doctor Who!!!

About the commentaries for the Doctor Who second series...does that mean that there will be different ones than what's downloadable from the BBC website? And did the "one episode on each disc" reference mean it's a visual commentary where you see them talking?

I was reading the restoration team site and began wondering. What's the usual gap between R2 and R1 releases of the Doctor Who titles? That is, when will R1 see The Return of the Master boxset? Or "The Invasion"? I was reading about both, and really want to see The Invasion, mainly because of the animated episodes, but also because I really like the Second Doctor.

Finished up "The Armageddon Factor" a couple days ago as well. Man, that one was much longer than it needed to be! Loved the ending, though. But it pains me knowing that the next season, Mary Tamm is gone as Romanadvoratrelundar aka Romana aka Fred aka back to Romana.

And the Girl in the Fireplace was written by Stephen "Coupling" Moffart too. :) My only complaint about TGITF was the clockwork droids, while looking good, we never really strong enough to be "monsters". Also, its only in the spin-off books you find out why they are clockwork (so that they can function and repair the ship in the event of a power failure)
All I "know" is the first episode is to be called "Smith and Jones" (a reference to the Doctor's long standing false name of John Smith, and the new compantion is called Martha Jones. Apparently the hospital she is studying at is to be transported to the moon. Like Rose, she has a family we will continue to visit, and her father is a bus driver. There are reports that a stunt with a bus has also been filmed for a future episode.
About the commentaries for the Doctor Who second series...does that mean that there will be different ones than what's downloadable from the BBC website? And did the "one episode on each disc" reference mean it's a visual commentary where you see them talking?
I think all of the commentaries are different from the ones you download from the website, apart from perhaps The Christmas Invasion's. I can't check now, but that one seems to have the same participants. Yes, the "one per disc" will let you see the contributors as they comment. We don't know if this is with them in a small window, or them filling the screen with the show in a small window. I've no idea why they couldn't include both the downloadable commentaries and the new ones in the set (just like the set will apparrently omit the TARDISodes)
Over on the Outpost Gallifrey forum, somebody indicates the delay is normally 7 months. But BBC America have been known to "bump" Tom Baker episodes up, because he is by far the most popular Doctor. Of course, The Return of the Master set has 2 Baker stories out of 3. I would expect the boxset to be out stateside before The Invasion for this reason. As I think I've said before, the Second Doctor is my favourite too. Only 2 more weeks until I get the Invasion!
Well, at least K-9 had a bit more to do. Lalla Ward who plays Romana's second incarnation is better (in my opinion) and she really gels with Tom Baker (the two actually got married in real life - for a while). She lives in Oxford now, married to one of the deans of the colleges and I think I may have seen her in Oxford a year or two back!

The cross-promotion games have started. Or have they? Somebody with eagle eyes spotted this on the Torchwood website about Weevils...

Image

Notice it talks about 1930's New York? Reptiles? It's "common knowledge" (ie. strongly rumoured, but not confirmed) that the 1930's New York story contains a monster from the Classic series.

Reptiles? What could they be? Silurians? Sea-Devils (It's hinted the sewers will be involved), Ice Warriors?... Or will the Doctor Who story actually have Weevils?

Incidently, it's well worth visiting the Torchwood site, its very good.

Well, everyone knew this was an inevitable post...

Doctor Who scores Hat-Trick at National Television Awards
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/6104048.stm

Like last year, Doctor Who has won three awards at this year's National Television Awards. David Tennant got Best Actor, Billie Piper best Actress and the show itself got Most Popular Drama.

What makes these awards more important than any other awards is that they are voted for by the public, not critics or industry professionals.
The hat-trick of awards for Doctor Who was a sign the show has lost none of its popularity with David Tennant taking over the lead role.

Tennant's predecessor, Christopher Eccleston, took the best actor award in 2005.

"I think if my eight-year-old self could see me at the Royal Albert Hall winning a prize for playing the doctor on telly, he would need a stiff shot of Irn-Bru," said Tennant after collecting his award from Dame Julie Andrews.

"I'm really chuffed," he added. "It's been really daunting to come into something that was such a huge success."
This of course bodes well for a recomission of the programme for Series 4 (2008) and Series 5 (2009) (its likely two years will be commissioned at once again, as they were for Series 2 and Series 3). I would expect the announcement to be made around Christmas time.

Here's a trailer for this coming Sunday's Torchwood, which features a Cyberwoman!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IXuECdsSmYE&NR

Too be honest, it all looks a bit silly and rather camp. So I'll probably think its the "best episode ever"

Seriously, there seems to be quite a mood-swing between each episode of Torchwood so far. I wonder if it's a stylistic choice, or simply a new show finding its feet.

Doctor Who: The Invasion

As some people may know, about 107 episodes of Doctor Who are missing from the BBC archives. The 8 part The Invasion is a story which has 2 of the episodes missing. However, thanks to soundtracks for these episodes being recorded in the 60's by young Doctor Who fans, the missing episodes can be presented in an animated format synched to the soundtrack.

I've given this disc a quick spin and I'm blown away by the animations. They're crude, obviously limited and are also blatantly flash. But they do have a style of their own, and they do work rather well most of the time.

Having been used to listening to "missing" stories soundtracks on CD with narration, this method just blows the audio only approach away!

Here's some of the pre-animation designs for the two episodes as seen on the Character Design featurette on Disc 1.

In addition to the 2 newly animated episodes, the 2 disc set contains the following:
Remasted Sound and Vision on the 6 surviving episodes
Commentary on every episode
Production Notes subtitles on every episode
Flash Frames - Featurette on the making of the new animation
Love Off-Air - Featurette on fans who taped Doctor Who soundtracks
Character Design - Featurette
Evolution of the Invasion - 50 Minute Making of
Amimation Trailers
VHS Links - narration from the BBC VHS release of The Invasion

The biggest loss with Billie Piper leaving the series isn't the loss of Rose 'I'm so clingy' Tyler, but the loss of her mother, the superb Jackie Tyler.

In an effort to kick-start my "Bring Back Jackie" Campaign, I've created a YouTube tribute to the wit, wisdom and emotional strength of Jackie Tyler.

Enjoy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tEjMIyf__qE
(This does contain minor spoilers for the rest of Series 2, but I've deliberately omited any major spoilers)

Last night, I watched the TV movie about the 8th Doctor on YouTube with my little sis, who was on the phone with me as she watched it in her dorm room. She's become a Doctor Who fanatic, as I'm more casual about it and obsessed with enough other stuff already. Anyways, definitely an interesting film. Pretty good, though I can only compare it to the newer series (which is better, of course). Mad TV's Will Sasso seemed a bit out of place in Doctor Who, ha, but I enjoyed it.

An article on the restoration of The Invasion for its DVD release
http://technology.guardian.co.uk/weekly ... 59,00.html

Read it and weep, when you consider Disney doesn't put a fraction of as much effort into their "TV on DVD" releases.
