Well, personally, I absolutely love the fact that the trailer was in French, and I will ask: Does anyone think the whole movie will actually be in French, too? Since the movie is obviously set in Paris. Of course it would have English subtitles, but I think the movie would be cool in French. It could get annoying after a while, though, to English-speakers.

I really like the designs of everything. The animation is beautiful. I just don't like how the ears, hands, nose and tail of the blue mouse(or is it a rat?) look orange.

And as for it being a "buddy film", haven't all Pixar films teamed up characters together? If anything this trailer concentrates on mostly the blue mouse/rat. Is there anything wrong with giving him a chubby friend to talk to?

I'm sure it will be French...in France and on the DVD's foreign language track. Not a chance the whole thing will be in French beyond that.

I would say that this would be most likely, to what Luke said. The movie will probably have snippets of "Wee, Wee" or "Bonjur" (sp? for both), but not the whole movie.

It looks pretty funny! Now how do you actually say "Ratatouille"? Are the two l's silent, or is it like 2-lee? Or are the two l's pronounced like lee, but without the l? I'm confused!

Well, much as I am a critic of Finding Nemo I don't think this looks like a "Buddy Movie". That said, I don't know what to make of it from the trailer. At the moment the words "Tom and Jerry" spring to mind, but I'm sure Pixar know that such rapid-fire hi-jinks won't substain a feature, and will be adding emotional depth to the characters.

However, like Cars (and indeed, for balance, like the synopsis of Flushed Away) I'm finding it hard to muster a weak "yay!" for Ratatouille. In fact, these days I'm finding it harder and harder to muster much enthusiasm for any film. The only film that has given me more than a flirtation of excitement over the past 18 months or so is the Silent Hill movie, and that's only because I love the games so much.

I grow weary of the marketing hype. (Do we really need a trailer for Ratatouille with Cars when the films still not out for another year from Cars release?) I have niggling doubts based on the fact that everything seems to be stuff we've all seen before (Ratatouille = Tom and Jerry?). But I also get frustrated that films which do have some fresh or innovative ideas (such as Valiant or Teacher's Pet: The Movie) either don't have the courage or means to explore them fully, or are automatically sidelined by the studios for being different.

I'm not saying it won't be a good film, or that I won't watch it. That would be silly. But based on that trailer, is anyone going to be sat on the edges of their seats until June 2007 counting the days until it's release? I don't think so.

If it's too early to show anything of substance, then in my opinion, they'd be better off not showing anything at all. We don't need fluffy teasers a good 13 months in advance. Stuff like this is reducing movies to simply comodities, to be bought and consumed like groceries.

I am totally excited about this movie, it looks lik one of the bests since A Bug's Life, which is probably my favorite Pixar movie. I can't wait till next year at this time. I'm also really excited that Brad Bird is directing. The Incredibles was a pretty exciting feature. So to answer your question= Yes! I will be sitting on the edges of my seat until June 2007, because Ratatouille looks like an awesome movie, and I don't think that you should judge something that only has a 1-2 minute preview. You haven't even seen the other 75-90 minutes of the film. I think that once a couple of teasers/regular trailers come out, you should judge what you think about the movie then, not now, because there is still another year for you to wait.

That's my exact point. Why bother showing a teaser for a film which is 13 months away from release? What does it actually achieve?

Well, the goal is to get the word out that the movie is coming and to get people excited, although it doesn't always work that way. For The Incredibles, some people I talked to said that the teaser just got them mad when the movie came out because they were expecting a scene with Bob trying to put on his suit.

It totally caught me off guard when I went to see Finding Nemo and got a preview of The Incredibles, and now I love going to see a Pixar film knowing I'll get a sneak preview of their next movie. Even though, out of all Pixar's teasers, it looks like this will be the first teaser I like.

Somewhat off-topic: isn't Pixar's new short, One Man Band, also set in Paris? Seems interesting that the Ratatouille teaser and the short film will be set there.

But do you need to be talking about a movie a whole year before it is released? Does that actually generate excitement? Or will be buzz be gone by the timethe film comes out? I think, four months should be the optimal time.

The Lion King didn't need 13 months of lead-in before its release to become the (then) highest-grossing animated film of all time. In fact, for a more recent example, I don't think Shrek had month after month after month of pre-release hype, but still did very well at the box office, thank you very much.

From a personal point of view, I'm finding that when these long promised films do get released, I'm feeling as if they're old news already. I do think its one of the problems of the motion picture industry.

I'll be fair on Cars, because we've not seem that many spoilers (in fact, we've not seen that much actual promotion of the story anywhere), despite it attaining unprecidented levels of promotion. But.... most of the time, unless you live in a cave, its easy to know over half the story of a film by seeing the trailer and reading a couple of newspaper articles promoting it's release.

I'm increasingly finding familiarity breeds comtempt. I didn't have much attraction to Cars in the first place, but I've even less now, and God knows when its actually released over here in the UK. If I end up seeing Ratatouille frantically running around like a wacky 50's cartoon character for the next 12 months, I'll most likely have gotten sick of it by the time it is released.

Lately, I'm getting more enjoyment out of overlooked or small, non-mainstream films. And I think the main reason for this is I'm seeing most of them without high expectations (such as football film Goal! which I really did enjoy, even though I don't enjoy football at all, and didn't think I would like the movie at all).

Thanks for that. However, there is already another thread about this found here. Threads move around on this site pretty quickly, and that one had just been pushed onto the second page, so I can see how you missed it. However, in the future, use the search option (found at the top of the page) before posting a new topic about one that could already exist.
