Even Jay Leno from the Tonight show got the DVD before Micky Mouse Boy and I.
Elton John promoted the Lion King on Jay Leno's Tonight show. Looks like he stopped by the NBC studio in Burbank before heading the Premiere in Hollywood.
Elton John also performed the song "Can You Feel The Love Tonight" on the show.

Guess what? My order from DisneyStore.com arrived today. On Saturday. I didn't know the US Postal Mail delievered packages on Saturday.
The collectible pin, plush toys and lithographs are nice.
What's not fair is that Micky Mouse Boy hasn't recieved his copy yet.
I haven't had a chance to watch the DVD because I'm busy with midterms. There's a whole booklet of special offers and coupons. The Lion King 1 1/2 storybook / diary is really cute. The chapter booklet / insert has a paragraph and two diagrams explaining why the restoration process was needed.
I'm going to find that Mary Poppins SE trailer now.

Yeah, it's powerful.
I think the One Ring has more power though. I'm not sure I'd want to wear that ring though.
The box is so colorful. This is the first DVD that I got that came with a slip-on case and flap.
Here's my short review:
When I listened to the DVD on my home theater system, I noticed that the musical sequences don't have a lot of bass. The soundtrack CD has more bass than the DVD's EHT and original mix. I'm guessing that Terry Porter wanted to minimize the song related bass so that the audience can hear the vocals.
The EHT mix does have a little more bass, mostly for low frequency effects though. The elephant footsteps are loud - I can also feel them when I listen to the EHT mix. The EHT mix does use the surround speakers quite nicely, especially during the musical seuqencies. I can hear ambient sounds in the front and surround speakers too.
Gotta go now.

Sure, no problem. I would write a longer review, but I've been busy with schoolwork lately; I have midterms this week ick. In fact, I've only been able to watch a few chapters from the movie and I haven't even looked at the extras yet. I'll try to post more later.
It's too bad that the only place the commentary track is mentioned is in the audio set-up menu.
It's not mentioned on the DVD box or the slip-on cover. Come-on Disney, you can print "audio commentary" on the slip-sleeve case.
Update:
During the musical sequences, the volume of the song related bass is low. I am still able to hear and feel the LFE effects when I listen to the EHT and original theatrical mix. When listening to the original soundtrack CD, I hear a lot of bass in "I Just Can't Wait to be King" and "Can You Feel The Love Tonight." Now on the DVD, there isn't much deep bass. Again, I feel that Disney wanted to reduce the volume level of bass in order to emphasize the vocals and mid-range instruments. I'm just used to listening to the original soundtrack; it has a more "bassy" feeling.
I'll try to compare the video and quality of the Lion King DVD against my other DVDs.

I just took a quick look at the DVD. It seems that the DVD video is 815 x 480 pixles. I believe DVDs are encoded at 720 x 480 for NTSC. Notice that 815 / 480 = 1.6979. So, The Lion King's aspect ratio is 1.6979 or 1.7 : 1, not 1.66
The colors are nice and bright. I think my plasma TV's brightness is set too high. lol The lines and curves are really smooth. I love the picture quality in the DVD. The quality of the video is as good as the video in Lilo and Stitch.

1.66 ratios often come out as 1.69 on home theater systems. Kinda the same thing with Academy ratio films - they're technically 1.37:1, but the fullscreen ration of 1.33:1 is "close enough", if you will.Starion wrote:I just took a quick look at the DVD. Life often leaves us standing bare, naked and dejected with a lost opportunity. Over the bleached bones and jumbled residues of numerous civilizations are written the pathetic words: "Too late."
