My point about the French releases was that it takes hardly any effort to replace a few post production titles. It's not like calling it 'The Lion King 3' will result in Disney spending lots and lots of money re-animating various scenes.
Maybe Disney UK (or whatever) think its a confusing title? Plus it looks like we will get the Lion King 2 and 3 released on the same day - so it does sound better than 'The Lion king 1 1/2' and 'Lion King 2'.
We don't know how the film starts yet. If it starts in the 'present' (or 'future') with a flashback to the story in the 'past' then 3 is a perfectly reasonable title. But if the whole thing starts in the 'past' with no scenes in the 'present' (or 'future') then yes, it's not really an approprite.
Besides, Beauty and the Beast:The Enchanted Christmas, another mid-quel (with a wrap around set in the 'present') is known as 'Beauty and the Beast II' in some countries.

my guess is this is the preview we will see on the lion king platinum edition dvd. that really blows that we will see no animation of the film when one of it's selling points is a "sneak peak" at the upcoming feature the Lion King 1 1/2. is anyone else a little upset by this? the trailer is funny and i think good, but for a "sneak peek" on the lion king dvd it should be a little more in depth right? am i wrong in wanting to see the quality of animation that we'll be getting?

The issue of the movie having different sequencial numbers in different countries is a bit more annoying than having seperate titles because it throws off the canon. For example, the first Harry Potter book is referred to as "Philosopher's Stone" intrnationlly and "Sorcerer's Stone" within North America, but all HP fans know what we're referring to with "SS" or "PS," and everyone knows that it's the first book. Now, 1 1/2 makes it perfectly clear that TLK1.5 is supposed to be watched between and takes place before/during/between TLK and TLK2 but using seperate numbers throws off conversations regarding the time period. Also, suppose Disney comes up with an idea for another Lion King movie (after 1.5), then what do they call it? They can't use TLK3 because it already exsists. What about TLK3 domestically and TLK4 internationally? What would the pont of that be - the US will always be one (or one-half) number behind everywhere else. You see what I mean? It's confusing to use different numbers internationally and will throw off the official canon and international fan discussions.
Personally, I think the title (everywhere) should be The Lion King: Hakuna Matata, and just escew the numbering.

I think that should Disney do another Lion King sequel, it will be called the Lion King 4 worldwide. It's just too confusing having the latest called The Lion King 3 when there's actually 4 movies.
I think one of the reasons Disney UK (and whatever) have gone for 3 is the Fox X-MEN 1.5 release has tarnished the 1 1/2 branding. People may not expect a whole new movie.
Besides, as Matthew Brodrick is in the Lion King 1 1/2 I guess it will have an adult Simba wrap-around, with the bulk of the story being a "flashback" so 3 is a perfectly valid name and it does keep the sequence.
