Anyways, I'm kinda hovering between the two. On the one side, you've got the original movie with the wonderful cast and catchy songs. On the other, you've got the newer version which is much brighter and vibrant with a faster pace in story and songs. But at the same time, the original is so dark and dreary at times and rather slow. Then again, the new one just doesn't have a classic musical feel to it, and really does come off as a TV movie.

I'd have to vote for the original in terms of actors/characters, though I'll pick the new one for pacing and story. Both get 1000 points for the songs they used.

Even though I like the TV movie, the theatrical one's much better. Carol Burnett, in my mind, is the only person to play Miss Hannigan. The orphans in the older film are more distinctive and have more personalities than the newer ones, who just sort of fill up space. The newer one is actually more true to the original Broadway show, but that's sort of the problem. Like Escapay said, the TV movie feels like a TV movie. It's rather claustrophobic because it hardly deviates from the original Broadway show material. The theatrical film, on the other hand, felt big and cinematic (and had a much better climax). I also admit to liking the darkness of the older version, even if the newer one moves at a better pace. So in the end, the older one wins (notice I don't say original and remake because the newer film is based off of the show, not the old film which in itself was based on the show).

I like the 1982 version much better, but I liked the Broadway play more, I saw it on Broadway in 1979 or 1980

I prefer the original too, although the TV movie was nice too, and it was truer to the stage show. But I still prefer the 1982 one.

My kids love the 1999 version. Now, I'll admit, my wife and I prefer the original, but we don't let the kids see it because of the language.

I watched the 1982 Annie musical last weekend. Boy, was it long! 2 hours!!!

Great songs, though. I barely remember that remake. All I remember is that Annie from the 1999 film had cuter hair, which hardly makes it comparable to the original film.

People forget that before the 1982 movie, there was a successful Broadway play upon which the movie was based. Although I've never been a fan of the first movie, I did enjoy the play quite a bit at one time (I was in it), and also prefer the newer "remake". It's a little more true to the original musical.

Oh, and I believe you're referring to <b>Victor Garber</b>

rather than <b>Matthew Garber</b>

It's been awhile since I saw the original Annie all the way through, but it really wasn't as good as I remembered it. Except of course for Carol Burnette as Miss Hannigan. She was hilarious.

I prefer the original 1982 version over the Disney remake for many reasons. I won't list them all here.

I have seen the original Broadway play and one of my twin daughters was in a high school production of "Annie" in 1988, and of course it was wonderful.

How can anyone top Carol Burnett?

I'm sorry for dragging up an old thread, but I rewatched the Disney version (1999) of Annie again TWICE last night.

I love the original version of the movie. It's a classic, holds great nostalgia from my childhood for me.

That said, the 1999 Disney version is amazing in it's own rights. The inclusion of the song N.Y.C. (which is standard in any Broadway production) is the highlight of the movie. The "star-to-be" (Andrea McArdle) is INCREDIBLE. She has an awesome talent and it was so ingenious of Disney to give her a cameo in the movie. It's become one of my new favorites.

I never saw the 1982 film.
I saw the 1999 TV movie and liked it especially the song "Easy Street".

The original Annie is often hailed as an example of worst stage to screen adaptations. That being said I don't hate it. Carol Burnett is wonderful and so is Bernadette Peters. I think those two are the only real good things about the movie but they make it worth watching, However, I like the 1999 version a lot more. It is much more faithful to the stage version and Victor Garber is a great Daddy Warbucks. Also though Kathy Bates is no Carol Burnett I think she does a great job as Miss Hannigan.

The only really good part about the 1982 version is Carol Burnett, Tim Curry, and Bernadette Peters. Granted, that counts for a lot, but still. I really don't care for any of the new songs, and "Let's Go To the Movies" is nowhere near as good as "NYC", one of my favorite songs from the show. Also, I don't know why the movie was changed to July 4th from Christmas.

The TV movie isn't great, but it has a cast that's more than talented enough to handle the material and it's truer to the stage show, which gives it bonus points. Changing it to give Kathy Bates more to do by posing as Annie's mom was kinda silly, but not enough to annoy me. Plus it has the Cheno and Alan Cumming. Come on!

I really don't like the re-make. The only character cast I liked better was the woman (African American) who picks Annie at the orphanage and ends up with Warbucks. Kristen Chenowith is a nice cameo, but that role never really adds much.

And, no matter how much I like Kathy Bates, noone can play Ms. Hannigan like Carol Burnett--just because the role's so silly and serious at the same time (something that I don't think Bates pulled off very well). Burnett plays Hannigan as hilarious, but she still remains intimidating. Also, it kind of goes without saying that Burnett sung the part better as well (no offense to Bates).

The girl who plays Annie in the re-make is okay, but I still prefer to the original actor. And Tim Curry is irreplaceable, too.
