I really like this 2 disc DVD. The supplements are very good, but could be expanded on a bit more to get into the fully excellent territory (example; more Mary Blair! :D). I should also note that this needs re-releasing in Europe at least, with 2 discs instead of 1, pathetic considering that a cheapquel like The Lion King 1 1/2 (LK3 over here) was still a 2 disc. I can import, but why should I be made to, Ei$ner?

Oh, and destroy the original source of the Virtual Tea Party...

This may interest you, but I believe 2 disc editions are coming out soon. A British DVD website called DVD Times stated that these will be coming out as 2 discers in September. Considering how most 2 disc editions for catalogue titles from WB come out simultaneously on both sides of the Atlantic, I can see these will arrive in Region 1...

And I've pre-ordered the set from Choices Direct (Ignore the comments, this is not a rerelease of the already existing discs, which can be picked up for £5.99 each, they're already avaliable in a Batman Collection boxset). Update: Choices have added the seperate Special Editions to their website now

Play are showing the single SEs for pre-order:
Batman: Special Edition
Batman Returns: Special Edition
Batman Forever: Special Edition
Batman & Robin: Special Edition

These are all coming (as is the boxset) on 3rd October 2005. These discs are definitely coming. However, it's not clear if they will be 2 disc special editions or not. But my guess is that they will (and the boxset description will be updated when this infomation is available)

There are obviously many movies whose DVDs need some work. Most of Kubrick's movies, for a start (with the exception of Dr. Strangelove, which finally recieved an adequate release). Not only have some of his movies been released on DVD more than once, but subsequent DVDs are either no better or actually inferior to the older one. It's ridiculous.

Plus, alot of Criterion's older DVDs need re-releasing with Anamorphic transfers and alot of new bonus materials. The stuff they've put out for the last while has been pretty good; but some of their older titles are definately showing their age in lack of any kind of supplements.

Also,

The Party
This is a classic, and a comedic masterpiece; and all you get is the theatrical trailer (at least the movie's transfer is anamorphic, though).

Reboot (TV series)
Only the 3rd and 4th season were made availble on DVD. Plus, the 3rd season is out of print and even when it was out, you had to buy 4 different discs at about $30 CDN each to get all 16 episodes!

The Powerpuff Girls Movie

This movie was actually pretty good, but a widescreen version isn't even made available for purchase. The extras for the single disc release were surprisingly adequate, but there's always room for improvement.

Digimon: The Movie

This is probably the most mutilated "movie" in history. Actually composed of 3 seperate movies completely unrelated to eachother, this film is a maelstrom of plot-holes, ridiculous cliches and nonsensical dialogue mixed together with some decent music and some of the most rapidly moving battle sequences I've seen in anime.

The 3 movies should be seperated, properly translated; and released along with all the subsequent movies that've been made since then in Japan with the original Japanese audio tracks and appropriate bonus content.
The Brady Bunch Movie

This needs a commentary, deleted scenes, gag/blooper reel, and making of. In addition it would also be cool if it had pop-up fun facts as a subtitle track and the episode of Wings "A House to Die For" which guest starred many of the Brady Bunch in character.

And of course, it needs the cover altering so it displays it's theatrical tag-line in full - "They're back to save America from the 90's"
I've wanted to see this get a decent 2-disc SE release for a while, now; and A Very Brady Sequel as well. However, if I were Paramount, I'd be inclined to distance myself from the DTV titles such as the White House "movie". Now would be the perfect time to release SEs of these movies, too; since Paramount has started releasing the original Brady Bunch season box sets. Unfortunately, though, Paramount seems to know next to nothing about producing good DVDs.
Ghostbusters II

Four words. "Why no special edition?" If any film needs the Special Edition treatment, it's Ghostbusters II. (And normally Sony are so keen on double dipping. Why neglect GB2?) At least if they did a sequel they could include the cool Run DMC "Ghostbusters" music video (and perhaps get the rights for Ray Parker Jr's too this time).
We shouldn't stop there; the DVD of the first Ghostbusters could use some work, too; it's only a single-disc title. If Jaws can have multiple good releases each better than the last, why can't Ghostbusters?
Ringu films

The original Japanese Ring films. All are superb and both UK and US collections seem to be missing substantial bonus features.

The UK boxset has deleted scenes from Ring 0: Birthday and an unconnected film from director Hideo Nakata; Sleeping Bride (and a cool leticular cover of Sadako emerging from the TV).

The US boxet is still in flux at the moment, but it appears it will include no supplements (but does include Spiral, the 'true' sequel to Ringu).

Considering the nature of the films, their popularity in Japan (and their cult status worldwide) and even the fact that Hollywood has jumped on the 'franchise', these gems deserve so much more.
In a specialty DVD store in a mall near me (Square 1; Mississauaga, Ontario, Canada) I saw a Ringu set featuring all (i think) of the Japanese movies. I almost bought it, but noticed it was Region 2. Weird. I don't know where the store would've got it.
You won't get it. Ever. Rowling thinks such supplements will "spoil the magic". I'm not sure if I agree with this, but I respect her decision (but I seem to remember a CGI featurette on PoA - could she be changing her mind?)
Actually, I thought it was the executives at WB who thought revealing too much would spoil the magic, not J.K. I don't think she actually cares how much behind the scenes stuff is revealed about the films, especially since she very freely discusses behind the scenes tidbits that go on when she's writing the books. Either way, someone must be changing his mind since PoA is the meatiest of the HP DVD's released thus far (though it's still a far cry from what it should be).
I would've thought that the fact the HP movies stink would already have "spoiled the magic" to some extent.

Ugh. I did buy the DVD, but it definitely could be improved.

The Black Cauldron - Certainly a newly restored anamorphic print wouldn't hurt
As i've said many times, the best videos are not made from prints, prints are usually the less suitable element to do transfers from, unless all pre-prints elements are damaged or lost, unless that happens prints don't need to be restored, prints are not restored, prints are struck from restored intermediates negatives or other preprint elements. Prints are just a copy. So stop thinking that they have to restore prints :-P And for the Black Cauldron the negative is Technirama so an anamorphic print would be an optical reduction too :-P so it should be done from an original Technirama element that bypasses any optical stages :-P
Geez, I thought I was nitpicky. :P j/k

A new release of The Party must be coming. The UK has had a 2 disc SE for a long time (so long, it's in the generic 3 for £20 sales now).

http://www.play.com/play247.asp?pa=srmr ... tle=151407

* 'Inside The Party': a documentary featuring interviews with the film's producer and members of the crew
* Vintage interviews with Peter Sellers
* 'The Party Revolution - A New Technology': a featurette on the 'video-assist' system
* Commercials from Barclays Bank
* Photo gallery
* Theatrical trailer

Everyone kept telling me how bad Brady Bunch In The Whitehouse was, but it was surprisingly good, especially the non-Whitehouse first half. It may not have been the best of the movies (I still prefer A Very Brady Sequel), but I don't see what's wrong with it. Films like The Brady Bunch spoofs don't need huge budgets and TV movies work just fine.

The Evil Dead - Anchor Bay has released this on DVD quite a few times but never with a real documentary on the making of the film. Right now, there's quite a bit on the current special DVD. It's great stuff I wouldn't want to be excluded on a bigger, 2-disc special edition. But the audio commentary with Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert is so dry it's a turn-off. I want a documentary of the size and scope as Anchor Bay put on the Dawn of the Dead: Ultimate Edition package. And last I heard the entire original cast of 4, 5 if you count Ted Raimi, were reuniting for a convention or something. I don't know about you, but that sounds like the perfect place to get some interviews with them about the movie for a new DVD. Plus, let's face it- this movie's new THX transfer looked horrible. Everyone used to the original film was not acquainted with this overly dark and incredibly drab, no one who was a fan of this film got it the way they were used to it since the film acquired more than 90 percent of it's fanbase through home video/vhs. They really should have used the same transfer Elite used for their special edition.

The Friday the 13th series. More than anything else, because for the DVD boxset Paramount didn't find anyone who really had anything to do with part 5. Yet in the history of the series, one of the most enthusiastic cast members on the making of the movie was Melanie Kinnaman who played Pam in part 5. And of course, it does bother me that not only did Paramount not truly spend sufficient time or funds locating all the deleted footage for the films, but what footage does appear is shown in a split-screen, so it's half the screen size. At least that should be changed. Also, I'd really like to see a segment, featurette or promo would do nicely, for the Nintendo Friday the 13th video game. And something on the cultural impact of Jason, perhaps with clips from TV and movies that mention Jason Voorhees or show someone menacing in a hockey mask. And animated menus. And improved sound and picture quality for all of the films. And more cast interviews, plus they HAVE to get an interview with Steve Miner who directed 2 and 3. And behind the scenes footage for any or all the films would be SO great, words would not describe.

There are more, let me think of them.

Pumpkinhead: A special edition of this film is sorely needed. Sam Winston did interviews with Bravo about his work on Jurassic Park and looked great, now get into MGM or Columbia-TriStar/Sony and do Pumpkinhead! At most, just a featurette on the special FX, trailer, and widescreen.

Leviathan: MGM/Columbia-TriStar Sony also own this film and it would be nice if when Sam Winston did an interview for Pumpkinhead, he could talk about this film too. I want the same edition here- featurette, trailer, widescreen. Because it wasn't a 'good' movie like Pumpkinhead. If the two could be paired together for instance, that'd be excellent. Oh yeah and behind the scenes footage and/or outtakes would be great for both films too if available. And photo galleries, but animate them if you can.

Misery: There's a special edition of this film in Region 2 but not Region 1. That makes no damn sense at all. MGM can get an interview with Kathy Bates if they try, Laurent Bozeuro or whatever his name is who worked on the Christine special edition DVD would be able to get Kathy and maybe James Caan. And it would be so easy to get Rob Reiner. I want a really in-depth documentary, maybe split into separate featurettes, that talks about the adaptation, the popularity of the film, the making-of in terms of locations (ha ha) and casting, maybe footage from the Oscar ceremony where Kathy Bates won Best Actress. And for the love of God, put in that infamous deleted Lawnmower scene! I'm so DYING to see that, in fact if it had been in the movie, people wouldn't have thought Peter Jackson's Dead Alive lawnmower scene was so original.

Dead Alive (aka- Braindead): The Trimark DVD was great because it was the 97-minute Uncut version. But the extended Braindead version still includes more gore and scenes of dialogue. What I really want is the 97-minute version (because the R-rated version is about 85 minutes) with the 104 minute version's deleted scenes thrown in. Also, I want either an audio commentary with Peter Jackson, or a REALLY extensive making-of documentary with interviews with every living soul who was associated with this movie. It's a classic in the horror genre and it's been denied a special edition for TOO long! This thing needs the full red-carpet DVD treatment, I want every special feature imaginable.

Child's Play: Widescreen! Then a real digital mastering/remastering, and again- every special feature imaginable. Everyone associated with this movie (Don Mancini, Catherine Hicks, Kevin Yagher, David Kirshner, Chris Sarandon) gave interviews to VH1 and Bravo last year for the movie and freakin' MGM still refuses to special edition this movie up! Hopefully now Columbia-TriStar/Sony will inherit this film and work on it. But get to it because I'm SICK of waiting! And don't forget the trailer, you buttheads! I don't want to buy 2 DVDs just to get the trailer but you know I will because that's my number 1 most important special feature.

And speaking of movies Columbia-TriStar/Sony owns, and Child's Play director Tom Holland also directed the classic Fright Night, which is in need of a special edition! Quickly, before all the cast members are either dead or they refuse to talk about the movie. And when doing featurettes/documentaries, don't forget to always include special FX footage and photos!

I love the Secret of Nimh.

Dario Argento's Deep Red, Phenomena, Inferno, and Tenebre. The Anchor Bay DVDs were great for awhile. But I want more than just good picture and sound quality. I want real interviews with Dario Argento on these excellent films! Real extended interviews, with all the living crew, some cast members, and anamorphic widescreen transfers of Phenomena and Tenebre.

Scream (1996) - this movie really needs to be updated with the UNCUT version, what it shows us is actually very important. Then the widescreen transfer needs to be anamorphically enhanced. Plus I really want a new documentary on the making of the movie, a really good one all about the first movie. I hate how the dinky 30-minute featurette on the bonus disc left you wanting SO MUCH MORE, and talked too much about the sequels or the series. Who cares about them? Without the original movie, there would be no sequels. They didn't go into far enough detail about the special effects (make-up / gore effects), the MPAA ratings hassle/war, editing the film for theaters, the writing and exactly what films inspired the writer Kevin Williamson, the scenes and the way they turned out onscreen. They need new interviews with pretty much all the cast discussing their amazing scenes, practically no new interviews with anyone on the Trilogy Boxset DVDs. Seriously, 30 minutes for 3 huge box office movies? RIDICULOUS! Scream should command at least 40 minutes by itself. They should just go ahead and re-release the whole trilogy, because they didn't have an interview with Parker Posey for Scream 3, they didn't get enough interview footage with Jenny McCarthy (what they did get was hinting at something very funny, I'd like to see her expand on that), the music video for "She Said" by Collective Soul for Scream 2, the writer for Scream 3 is NOWHERE in sight on the current featurette. It's just so fluffy, it's an insult to this series fans.

And of course, nearly every Disney movie ever made. I'd like to see them go back and put the kind of money into their neglected classics that they put into Snow White and Bambi for their Platinum Editions. Put out a few more Masterpiece Editions of films like The Black Cauldron, Fun and Fancy Free, The Three Caballeros, The Great Mouse Detective, Pinocchio (why the hell isn't this on the slate for a Platinum Edition?), and The Adventures of Ichabod & Mr. Toad.

And what better act of goodwill could Disney show to the fans than to STOP VAULTING or OUT-OF-PRINTING their titles after only a year or so of release!!! Money-grubbing jackasses!

Battlestar Galactica (1978 movie) - simply giving it a snazzier coverart and a bonus about the series is not a better treatment. And for God's sake, anamorphic please! A better transfer would be good too.

The Maltese Falcon - come on, Casablanca and Treasure of Sierra Madre got 2-discers!

Bedknobs and Broomsticks - agree with everyone else, the single disc is good for now, but a two disc would be a godsend.

Song of the South - of course, having it released on DVD would be a godsend.

Dick Tracy - please?

A lot of Touchstone/Miramax early releases could do with SE's.

I agree with a lot of people on Bedknobs and Broomsticks, The Rescuers, Alice in Wonderland and The Great Mouse Detective. Those are some of my favourite animated classics, minus BAB, of course.
I was really disappointed with the Hocus Pocus DVD. It came out in June 2001 and i'd say the best thing about it was that it was in widescreen and that the audio was a bt better than the video. Other than that, the DVD itself sucked!! I love the movie but there wasn't a single bonus feature. The only thing it had that the video didn't was menus! Jeez. We deserve a special edition! I saw some behind the scenes stuff that a friend taped off TV for back in 93 and it's really great stuff!! All the blue screen, makeup, flying, special effects - it's incredibly interesting to have a new look at!
