The one at the bottom reminds me of the old Disney Masterpiece Collection VHS logos.
Man has a dream
And that's the start
He follows his dream
With mind and heart
And when it becomes a reality
It's a dream come true
For you and me!

Very cute trailer. And that music is so pleasant to listen to.

But I have the feeling that they totally inserted baby!Moana just so they can sell toddler dolls of her this Christmas. :P

They are right about the ocean being a character of it's own.

They’ve inserted child versions of every princess since Lasseter took over. I’ve never had any doubt it was for merchandise purposes (in present and future--possibly baby princess dolls, f.e.).

As cute as baby Moana is, I would have preferred a real trailer instead of just a clip from the movie.

Lasseter has a knack of taking elements and tropes that initially work and running them into the ground so much they become boring and tiresome.

No, this music is the one on baby Moana scene which is not the opening scene. This song by Te Vaka already exist.

The opening song of Moana is a Disney original creation also by Te Waka, shorter but very beautiful; it just covers Disney and WDAS logos.

At least baby Moana doesn't have her long hair :P And certainly Moses and Aladdin aren't the only ones who gets to see water rising from the ground :P

I didn't like the clip, to be honest. I didn't like how the water behaved as it's own character, it looks too silly.

It's obviously very clearly for merchandising purposes, though I'm not sure even Lasseter has absolute control over that element. In addition to being every "princess film" after Lasseter has taken over, I think it is also worth noting that it is also every princess film since the Disney Princess merchandising line has come into existence. Didn't think much of it at Tangled, but after 3 films (Frozen) it had become a very noticeable pattern. And after reading that there would be an infant Moana in the movie a while back, it became very clear to me that this is has now become an obligatory element for these movies. I mean, to be fair, so far the element has worked fine and hasn't been intrusive in the context of the individual movies, but it does start to feel rather copy-and-paste, and yeah, even a bit boring and tiresome. And it has even managed to slip into Zootopia...

Zootopia had childhood scenes for the two main characters too. It's an easy way to flesh out the characters and add back stories/motivations, so I understand people thinking it's a cheap trope. It hasn't really bothered me yet since it's been done well in most individual cases though, and childhood is an important element of fairy tale type stories. There were technically younger versions of Cinderella and Aurora as well.

That clip is gorgeous though! They seem to be delivering on all the promises about the animation for the water being breathtakingly beautiful. I wonder if the ocean is really "alive" or if that's part of the imagination of the characters? The music sounded nice too. I'm anxious to hear some of the actual songs.

I agree. I thought the "ocean as a character" aspect they were talking about would be much more subtle and abstract than this. Now it looks like a gooey alien blob raising its eyebrow. It's just goofy, unnecessary and not very believable. It kind of reminds me of Rapunzel's sentient hair idea in that first trailer that was eventually scrapped.

Yeah, I'm not a big fan of the wave-blob coming up as if it has a literal head/face. I agree that it lacks subtlety and is a bit different than I was imagining as well. Though I suppose I don't really mind the way that the water interacts with Moana there (I like the playful nature of it); I just don't like the visual representation. Thad said, I don't think I'd mind all too much in the grand scheme of things if they don't over do it.

Agreed. I thought they meant by "the ocean being a character" was in the same mold as the settings/locations becomes "characterized", as for example the forest in "Bambi", the Cathedral in "Hunchback", the Savannah in "The Lion King" and so on.

At least we could be relieved that Rapunzel's hair was never characterized in that way. And the same goes for Pocahontas' hair :P Despite her hair certainly being a character of it's own.

It reminds me more of the magic carpet in Aladdin than anything.
