It's interesting that Disney has yet to provide a release date for The Little Mermaid. All the other live action remakes have gotten their release dates before filming started. But I'm wondering if it's possible for it to be released next year, either in May or in July. If not, my guess would be 2023.

So the first actual set pictures leaked as scenes are being filmed (beware of spoilers):

http://www.justjared.com/2021/06/21/hal ... et-photos/

So it appears like Ariel has just been transformed into a human, washed up on shore, made herself a dress and hitches her self a ride into town by hiding in the back of a cart. This would imply that she is not discovered on the beach by Max and Eric and has her first experiences of the human world all by herself. I hope they incorporate the awkward first meeting moment later on then, because those moments are iconic!

Sets look good but I’m already sensing some of the visual mistakes from other remakes happening here. The monochromatic look is…. not good. The outfit and the hair wash her out so badly. I know it’s a rag but give us some visual contrast. It’s almost as if they’re trying to make her look bad and it really bothers me.

I don't mind the story change of her going into town by herself and meeting Eric later on, but I do agree with you when it comes to the aesthetics of the film. This does not look good to me. The Little Mermaid is arguably the most vibrant and luminous film of the Disney Renaissance in terms of color scheme and art direction and that has not translated at all here.

I imagine they cut the beach meeting scene because it's too "sexual." There are actually a lot of scenes like that in TLM actually--I imagine they're going to do as much as they can to neuter the original film.

How is that scene sexual? Is it because Ariel falls into Eric's lap? If that was reason, I guess we can say goodbye to the iconic scene of Ariel jumping out of the water. :| I suppose it's for the best given how difficult it would be to recreate that shot and how awkward it would look with a character wearing braids. Anyway, I think the scene was changed out of feminist concerns more than anything else. It's a way to get Ariel to experience the human world on her own first, outside her pursuit of Eric, to remind the audience of her passion for the land world and alleviate the criticism of her giving up her previous life for a man. Personally, I don't mind the change, but I hope this doesn't mean Ariel and Eric's outing together leading up to Kiss the Girl is shortened. They need to spend enough time together to make their romance believable.

^ I suppose it's Ariel's bare shoulders, the detailed close-up of her face as he looks at her, Eric's reactions, that kind of thing. It's almost like he's doing a spit take or gulping the whole time.

Or it could just be they don’t want to do a carbon copy of the animated movie? We don’t know why they changed it. Also, I don’t know what people want. When Lion King and Beauty and the Beast were carbon copies, people complained. When Mulan was too different from the animated film, people complained. With Cinderella and Jungle Book being happy mediums, some people complained that nothing new was brought to the table. It’s like what do people want? What will make people happy? Also, we are looking at terrible paparazzi pics probably taken from a phone faraway. We will see the final color grading once the film has been edited.

Different people complained about each remake. It wasn't the same people complaining with each film. The people that hated B&tB were usually the ones defending Mulan, and vice versa. The people who prefer the films be mutilated to the point of being unrecognizable as the films they're remaking are the ones who are happy about the most recent remakes (this, Cruella, Mulan, Hercules).

Of course, "happy" is a vague word. I think even when people are happy about the remakes, it's not a glowing happiness, just a middling "It wasn't so bad."

Regardless of how people may view Ariel rescuing Eric, And with that, regardless of what they may change in this film, this website from earlier seems to indicate that a similar seen may very well happen [Although it may be the ending scene when Ariel becomes human]

https://www.google.ca/amp/s/www.dailyma ... rmaid.html

Also I to agree with Sotiris On what They mentioned above that they didn’t mind :-)

As well, while I certainly have nothing against Halle Bailey [Not Berry :-), And do truly believe that she will do an unbungalievable Great job as she is not only very talented With her singing, And does look exactly like how Ariel would authentically look, If anyone reading this please do some fan art With Bonnie Wright as Ariel it will be truly gratefully appreciated :-) Again as much as I am very much looking forward to this movie, and as noted I am very satisfied with Halle as Ariel, not only because I believed that she would follow her fellow harry potter costar‘s footsteps, but from her acting tell us displayed and her overall personality, especially for determination and passion towards what she does [Not to mention her concerns for plastic ending up in the ocean and using recycled material Creating bathing suits :-) Would have her Truly be the best choice for Ariel if they were going for more literal adaptation from the original film. I also wonder If she’s related to Ben Wright Who played Grimsby in the original animated film [as well as Roger in the animated 101 dalmatians, the first and last Disney animated movie to use the Xerox process :-)

Ariel's sailboat dress is so underwhelming compared to the original. But it is so Colleen Atwood. She usually does some really good costumes, though, so I expect others will be quite lovely. I think someone said they think Ariel's hair might be red underwater and brown on land. I could see that happening and would be ok with it but for the love of God make it red some time, Disney!

I was glowing in my happiness for Cinderella's remake. Now I am just fairly happy with it. It's just a little better than "meh" to me, but it is still one of my dreams come true!

Patricier21, Halle Bailey has never been in anything about Harry Potter. She has no relation to Ben Wright. And the last Disney movie to use the Xerox process was The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh (1977).

I think they meant they would have liked Bonnie Wright to play Ariel the way Emma Watson played Belle, and wondered if Bonnie Wright could be somehow related to Ben Wright. :?:

It's not. The Little Mermaid was the last film to use Xerox.

I'm hoping when it's out theaters are open and everyone can enjoy it the way it's meant to be enjoyed - on the big screen and with a biliion $ box office take.

If this follows the "In theaters and Disney+" pattern I'm gonna shoot myself.

New set photos give us our first look at Noma Dumezweni in costume. Could she be playing Eric's mother? More photos here.

Per wikipedia, she's cast as Carlotta though it looks like she's dressed as something other than a maid.

Her costume is so weird. What's going on with that bottom? :? There's no way she's playing Carlotta with that outfit. I think she's either Eric's mother or Ariel's mother or maybe even Vanessa's mother.

Yeah, I don't see that outfit being a Carlotta outfit. My bet is on Ariel's mother.

I like the costume. It is sort of couture, I think. Her hair reminds me of the style Ariel wore in TLM 2.

The character is definitely way above the social standing of Carlotta from the 1989 movie. I’m very excited to find out who this mystery character is— perhaps Ariel’s mother made a deal with Ursula herself…?
