Race isn't a plot point in Lilo & Stitch in the slightest? Not even vaguely as in TP&TF.

There is talent everywhere, you're telling me they couldn't have found someone who looks like a native, and is a talented actress? They shouldn't cast based on color color alone, but I think its an important part of the character regardless. To have it lean towards white passing, its obvious why they do these things.D23ExpoVisitor25 wrote: ↑Wed Oct 09, 2024 7:55 amWhat if Nani was cast because of talent.Pokenonbinary wrote: ↑Wed Oct 09, 2024 5:47 am One of the biggest plot points of the original movie is that Nani and David are dark-skinned indigenous hawaiian people who don't have any other choice that to work in hotels where they fetichize their culture for tourists, apart from the system being racist to her and wanting to take Lilo away from her
And in this live action they have a whitepassing actress with no native hawaiian ancestry as Nani and they almost got a whitepassing actor for David (who they fired for having old tweets and replaced with a good choice)
At least Lilo actress is like Lilo
It's sad because Nani is the best and most emotional and deep character from the original movie, and I would have loved to see a dark-skinned indigenous actress get that opportunity
People shouldn’t only be cast by the color of their skin, they should be cast on talent and acting and quality.
So you're saying there are no talented dark skinned native Hawaiians?D23ExpoVisitor25 wrote: ↑Wed Oct 09, 2024 7:55 amWhat if Nani was cast because of talent.Pokenonbinary wrote: ↑Wed Oct 09, 2024 5:47 am One of the biggest plot points of the original movie is that Nani and David are dark-skinned indigenous hawaiian people who don't have any other choice that to work in hotels where they fetichize their culture for tourists, apart from the system being racist to her and wanting to take Lilo away from her

I mean I’m sure Disney went through all the Hawaiian ladies, dark skinned or light-skinned, they could for the role of Nani, but the one who they got was the most talented to be that character.Pokenonbinary wrote: ↑Sat Oct 12, 2024 7:30 pmSo you're saying there are no talented dark skinned native Hawaiians?D23ExpoVisitor25 wrote: ↑Wed Oct 09, 2024 7:55 am
What if Nani was cast because of talent.

You're saying that?
The actress they ended up getting is white passing and half Filipina, like she's not native Hawaiian, said by her own sisterD23ExpoVisitor25 wrote: ↑Sat Oct 12, 2024 7:42 pmI mean I’m sure Disney went through all the Hawaiian ladies, dark skinned or light-skinned, they could for the role of Nani, but the one who they got was the most talented to be that character.Pokenonbinary wrote: ↑Sat Oct 12, 2024 7:30 pm

So, it’s a win-lose scenario either way.
Again, talent needs to come first.Pokenonbinary wrote: ↑Sat Oct 12, 2024 7:44 pmThe actress they ended up getting is white passing and half Filipina, like she's not native Hawaiian, said by her own sisterD23ExpoVisitor25 wrote: ↑Sat Oct 12, 2024 7:42 pm

The character Nani should be played exclusively by a native hawaiian
Okay let's cast Nicole Kidman as Moana, she's also HawaiianD23ExpoVisitor25 wrote: ↑Sat Oct 12, 2024 7:45 pmAgain, talent needs to come first.Pokenonbinary wrote: ↑Sat Oct 12, 2024 7:44 pm

Thanks! I'm tired of that person constantly defending everything disney does
The first actor for David was whitepassing, saying that an actor who had eurocentric features was more handsome than the actor with Polynesian features they ended up choosing says a lot... specially when the cartoon movie made Lilo, Nani and David very explicitly racialized in their features.Disney's Divinity wrote: ↑Wed Oct 09, 2024 9:38 am The first choice for David was much more handsome, it's a shame he had controversy. Of course the Twitter scum patrol probably did comb both actors' whole existence to find something to cancel them over--like what happened when Mena Massoud correctly predicted TLM-LA's failure which anyone with marbles could've seen coming--which is why I say being a part of these remakes is a terrible career move for any actor these days. We haven't seen anything to know how the cast are as actors, but Nani was always the best thing about the film for me and whoever the actress is, she at least looks fairly like her.
Race isn't a plot point in Lilo & Stitch in the slightest? Not even vaguely as in TP&TF.Again with the disturbing race percentiles and racebaiting. Gross.

They could cast Elon Musk as Princess Tiana (both African American) and he would defend the casting

But I guess I should expect lies from someone who wants Tiana to be a hand-drawn big-screen movie but won’t put in the work to make that happen (i.e. make Moana 2 a box office hit) because they think it’ll just be more of the wrong lessons learned when that couldn’t be further from the truth and just a lie from someone too lazy to do anything and hides like a cowardly king on a throne who would rather hide than do anything to change things.
And they could cast Idris Elba as Rapunzel and you'd claim anyone who didn't like it was racist, so I'll still take the other poster over your insane viewpoint.Pokenonbinary wrote: ↑Sun Oct 13, 2024 3:13 amThanks! I'm tired of that person constantly defending everything disney does

I don't agree with the whitepassing nonsense, for one. For another, someone's attractiveness isn't higher just because they're a prrson of color. The first actor for David was whitepassing, saying that an actor who had eurocentric features was more handsome than the actor with Polynesian features they ended up choosing says a lot...
Sorry, still not true. And no, the plot of Lilo and Stitch is very much race-ethnicity focused
Actually the original tale of Rapunzel comes from Persia and the story itself can be found in most cultures, it's not exclusive of europe, so there's that, there's also the fact that Gothel is very jewish-romani coded, Flynn in the concept art was supposed to be romani and other details, so if they made Rapunzel romani, desi, SWANA, jewish etc it would be fineDisney's Divinity wrote: ↑Sun Oct 13, 2024 11:03 pmAnd they could cast Idris Elba as Rapunzel and you'd claim anyone who didn't like it was racist, so I'll still take the other poster over your insane viewpoint.Pokenonbinary wrote: ↑Sun Oct 13, 2024 3:13 am

Sorry, still not true. And no, the plot of Lilo and Stitch is very much race-ethnicity focusedThe movie I saw was about a broken family and poverty more than anything else.
Actually the original tale of Rapunzel comes from Persia blahblahblah pointless race minutiae spiel
You're the one who has race on the brain to the point you think finding one person more or less attractive than another is about their skin. Talk about lunacy. But then I think most of this racebaiting in every topic is just an act to keep drama going nonstop, I'm just waiting for when the mods will finally do something. You're the one thinking that an actor closer to whiteness is more attractive than a Polynesian looking one.
Because you have one woman who's not old or secure enough yet in life the way an older person--like a parent--would be being forced to take on the role of caretaker for her younger sister when tragedy struck their family? The film doesn't even vaguely bring race into it the way TP&TF does with Tiana and Facilier.Tell me why Nani, Lilo and David live in poverty in an archipelago full of tourists that makes billions in revenue every year, wow tell me why? Why would three native hawaiian characters live in poverty in Hawai'i?
Look who’s talking.Pokenonbinary wrote: ↑Sun Oct 13, 2024 11:31 amThe two most annoying people in this forum fighting for two daysD23ExpoVisitor25 wrote: ↑Sun Oct 13, 2024 10:55 am
