Wow, I'm shocked they even managed to get away with this. Although the Simba looking Beast does make me laugh :p

I think we have a winner in the Biggest Rip Off of Disney and to say that's a rip off of Disney is probably not the right comment even.....it looks like when they had the Leno VS Conan Cartoon late night war type of animation

anyway this i think this image pretty much sums it up....besides my head blown off....

since this thread, ive been looking at dvds in town. so far ive seen "an ant's life" and, while not disney, "pigs tail, the story of a spider" [charlottes web] they both appear to come from the same company as the cover design is identical.

I see horrendous "fake" versions of Disney films every day - the best places to look? Dollar General, Big Lots, Dollar Tree (any of those dollar value stores)

... and GoodWill... oh lord do these clog shelves at GoodWill.

And the cases are always those paper thin plastic ones...

The funniest thing about these videos is that the animation reminds me of the CG animation found in stuff like Futurama and the Kirby animated series: very colorful, but at the same time very stiff.

I was at Target a couple of weeks ago, and I saw these dolls:

Image

I just now realized that the dolls have names besides the character names, so I guess it's a little less of a rip-off, but still...Tangled isn't even out yet, and they copied her dress. I mean, I know that the Disney versions typically are the definitive versions of these characters, but for once I'd like to see a company not copy Disney's designs...or better yet, just don't make the merchandise- let people buy from Disney! :)

Those dolls are so ugly. What parent would buy those over actual Disney dolls? I can't wait to see all the Rapunzel rip off toys and DVDs.

Ouch. I can't really complain about Alice's dress (since her dress was designed by John Tenniel, and has been the character's defining costume since the book's publication), and the dress that Disney's Snow White wore is the one everybody associates with said character, but the fact they copied Rapunzel's dress before her movie is even out really makes this look like a dirty cash-in. Plus, they all look slutty; Alice in particular looks like she's wearing one of those Alice fancy dress costumes for adults.

Back for another example. How many people have run into several pizza chains named after Pinocchio? Here's an example, which I got from Google Images, from somewhere in North America, but I've seen them in various European places as well:

Image

A lot of them seem to use the image of Disney's Pinocchio, normally with a little chef's hat or pizza plonked on (as in that image). I don't understand why of all things they'd use Disney's Pinocchio as a mascot for pizza. Not only is it gimicky (hey kids, your favourite Disney puppet works here!), but can't they think of something more Italian than an all-round American take on an Italian character? I find the ones where they use the more Italian design of Pinocchio are easier to accept, though.

P.S. I know, that sign leaves much to be desired. I'm sure if I lived in the middle of nowhere, it could seem like the Ritz, but I'm a rather discerning gentleman and by no means provincial. "Pizza" looks like "Rzza", whatever that's supposed to be. And what are Hoagies?

Now that the Kimba thing has been brought up, I wanna put my two cents on it.

A lot of people are quick to say that Lion King "stole" from Kiba. Yes, the similarities between them are striking, but is it that bad that it merits so much controversy? Maybe, but not THAT big. If that were the case then why is no one trying to make justice by detailing all of the scenes in Avatar and compare them to Pocahontas?

You know what I suspect happened? It's very likely that the creators HAVE indeed seen Kiba, but their intention was never to copy it. Everyone has said that Lion King is more of a Bambi remake than any other movie. What I believe happened was that the scenes in Kiba were so striking, so moving and so inspiring that they were burned into the minds of the writers and directors. They surfaced when writing the story and trying to come up with scenes.

Have you noticed that when trying to tell a story you come up with scenes that are derivative of other stories? That's because some stories make such a huge impact that we try to re-tell them our way, and many times we are unaware of it.

On the other hand, with so many American re-interpretations of many foreign movies and stories like "The Ring", The Lion King could be seen as an indirect re-interpretation of Kiba.

I think what hurts here is that Disney is denying that they "stole" from Kiba. If they admit that they were inspired by it, then I am sure no one would be whining about it.

It will be interesting to see how these rip off companies get around the titled "Tangled" since Disney is no longer using "Rapunzel" without getting into trouble.

If we're talking about movies, they'll probably just name them Rapunzel. Which, if you think about it, is really going to confuse a few parents at their local WalMart DVD department...

Interesting. I just saw the image and assumed Lion King came first.

I'm most curious what Video Brinquedo (I think they produced The Frog Princess knock-off film last year) will call their Rapunzel knock-off. And what it will look like, because you just know they're busily working on getting it ready for Tangled's release date.
