However if it was Dreamworks making a Christmas Carol with Shrek.....I wouldn't be surprised if that did better sadly...(yes I know shrek got a christmas special but you can subtitute Shrek and dreamworks with Hannah Montana... and Disney if it makes more logical sense....)pap64 wrote:goofystitch wrote:Even though the film was number 1 this weekend with $31 million, it came in under expectations. I doubt the film would have ever reached 50 million in one weekend. Yes, it's a Disney film. Yes, it's a Jim Carrey film. And yes, it's a Christmas film. But its a bit of the off season for movies and people aren't going to rush out to see a movie that's been done to death already.
Still, 30 million is good.

Yeah, it would have definitely made some money there, because it's an established franchise tackling a much celebrated Holiday.disneyboy20022 wrote:pap64 wrote: However if it was Dreamworks making a Christmas Carol with Shrek.....I wouldn't be surprised if that did better sadly...(yes I know shrek got a christmas special but you can subtitute Shrek and dreamworks with Hannah Montana... and Disney if it makes more logical sense....)

$30 million isn't a bad opening by any means, but when you consider the budget and advertising, it fell short, and unless it pulls a "Polar Express" (which it could), this doesn't bode well for it recouping its budget. Not to mention the fact that it's in 3-D generally means they should get a boost compared to if it were only in 2-D theaters.
"Ta ta ta taaaa! Look at me... I'm a snowman! I'm gonna go stand on someone's lawn if I don't get something to do around here pretty soon!"
Not to mention that other movies will be opening in November as well (such as the new Twilight movie) that could damper its presence.SpringHeelJack wrote:$30 million isn't a bad opening by any means, but when you consider the budget and advertising, it fell short, and unless it pulls a "Polar Express" (which it could), this doesn't bode well for it recouping its budget. But like its been said already, The Polar Express went through the same thing and was a success, so who knows.

True, but I think also "The Polar Express" has the advantage of being the only film version of that book. How many times has "A Christmas Carol" been done, really? I think the glut of adaptations could be a factor in this.

Interesting site........which If I were to reply there I would say....this which I believe is true.....Asperger Syndrome is not a cookie cutter syndrome....which translates Just because one diagnosed Aspie has the exact sympton or replica as the other......I mean if you got a cold around the fall or spring....everyone's symptons are runny nose sneezing....where with Asperger Syndrome..has more grey areas about the autism...and if someone asked me now if I was smart....and yet at the same time lacked what double meanings mean....and wouldn't pick up on some things as other kids do around my age....I would say yes....I also would say.....if someone asked me if a child (such as me at the age I was diagnosed with iAS) is very influenced around there upbringing....or how parents raise them......I would say to a degree yes.......because sometime you gotta make a plan because the child who gets diagnosed does grow up or grow older...and it depends how parents and teachers and how much or less a support group was needed and a good shrink and I think medicine is vital.....and I do not support these so called drug vacations where people stop taking their pills because they are doing well.....I mean do diabetic people stop taking insulin for a vacation because the medicine is working well so lets stop it...no....and for me it helped my mom was a RN and my dad taught and still does teach kids with severely disabled handicaped kids.......so....and also we learned a few years ago that my Dad has AS....but I feel that he is going backwards almost even though I am making more success in learning things about whats appropriate when where and if.....which leads to another study....whihc my mom said years ago....Asperger Syndrome or even autism in general....is like backwardsajmrowland wrote:Aaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhh!

I saw this today with my dad and we both liked it! I loved the IMAX 3D Experience! They did a great job on the film. To me all the characters were all ugly in the film lol. Not even the kids were cute. I mean come on... Add a little Disney touch to the kids at least! lol
That one ghost got on my nerves so much with him laughing at everything. Even when he disappeared he was still laughing lol. Other than that, I really enjoyed it. I still prefer Mickey's Christmas Carol the best.

I also loved the movie! Must see it at the cinemas at least one more time. Jim Hill seems to think that people saying this movie is a commercial failure is bull...

I don't know, I thought his constant laughter was a reference to his constant jolly-ness, like in the book and every version I've seen. But the laughing while he died.... that was just chilling. If I had seen this, like 5 years ago, I would have had to avert my eyes.Matt wrote: That one ghost got on my nerves so much with him laughing at everything. I was about to post that article myself. We'll see if that happens. Like I said, there's a huge possibility that it will be a big hit by the time it ends its run. But there are bigger movies coming (Twilight, Princess and the Frog, Chipmunk Sequel), and the story has been done to death, so its long appeal might be affected.Prince Edward wrote:I also loved the movie! The Chipmunks Sequel or to be politcally correct Squeakquel...I thought wasn't coming out until December 25th...pap64 wrote:I was about to post that article myself. We'll see if that happens. Anyway those are major contenders....I would be surprised if the Twighlight sequel didn't become #1 at it opening weekend.....But I agree A Christmas Carol has been done so many times in so many re-incarnations.....I do think in years to come that this will be the most faithfully accurate to the book animated version of The Christmas Carol....and I bet they won't release it on DVD/Blu Ray until 2010....and also about it being so soon for a Christmas movie....in one mind I would agree...but they start selling Halloween Candy and stuff in August and they have released Christmas movies and stuff like in mid october and it's almost like Thanksgiving gets passed over....(if thats a pun I don't mean it to be) although I guess I wouldn't want to eat a Reese's Turkey....that might just be too much of a bird to swallow

True, but the thing is that Disney wants the movie to keep doing business well into Christmas, and like I already mentioned there will be a lot of films released by then that will try hard to compete.disneyboy20022 wrote:The Chipmunks Sequel or to be politcally correct Squeakquel...I thought wasn't coming out until December 25th...pap64 wrote: I was about to post that article myself. Disappointing ‘Carol’ May Take Toll on Disney
http://mediadecoder.blogs.nytimes.com/2 ... on-disney/
(via disneyreport.com)
I haven't yet seen the film, but I'd still like to, and I might see it sooner rather than later. I think that part of the problem is the fact that it came out right after Halloween, when some people aren't yet thinking about Christmas. As long as word-of-mouth is good enough, I can see the movie becoming more popular as Christmas draws near. I think.
I don't like how movies get written off so quickly- DVD and Blu-ray sales are such a determining factor these days; box office shouldn't be taken as strongly as it once was, since, especially in this economy, many people are waiting to rent or buy the DVD or Blu-ray instead of taking the whole family to the movie theater.

I saw this movie with my sister yesterday, and we both were pleasantly suprised by how good it was! The story is the familiar good story, so that wasn't what impressed us. It was HOW they told the story that was entertaining. The animation was beautiful, and the 3D was totally worth it. As you fly over the rooftops of London and the snow filled countryside, I almost felt like I was riding on Soarin' at my own movie theatre in Kansas (making it well worth the price of admission)!
I think that predicting the success of this Christmas movie after its weekend opening (the weekend after Halloween) is a bit premature. I'm not saying that this film is going to take off and be the Christmas hit that people may have expected it to be, but I think that it will get GREAT word of mouth and will see a steady box office for many weeks. Maybe even an increase.
I do think that this is probably the most adult animated movie that Disney has ever done. It kind of makes me wonder if this is how the original animated features must have seemed like to adults. They actually play the ghosts for some scary and horrific moments. There isn't anything inappropriate in it, and it can actually be useful to help teach lessons and explain points to children. I can imagine a few articles being written by parents, though, who talk down to their children and don't think that they are capable of watching a faithful dramatization of a fairy tale.
Just remember, when Snow White first premiered there were adults and children so horrified by the wicked queen!
Overall, a fun holiday treat that I will definitely be going back to theatres to see again (because it's the only place to get the real 3D effect!).

Yeah, but they don't really "count" towards recouping the films budget entirely- they still have to pay for costs of making the Blu-ray / DVD, advertising for them, etc. It adds some money, but it's a rare day when you can say that home video sales push them back into the black.blackcauldron85 wrote:DVD and Blu-ray sales are such a determining factor these days.

I really do enjoy seeing films in 3D IMAX too. It just intensifies the entire movie experience. I loved Jim Carrey and thought he did a wonderful job in all his roles.
