The Little Mermaid: Diamond Edition - Fall 2013
Re: The Little Mermaid: Diamond Edition - Fall 2013
I want to get my discs replaced with the corrected ones, I'm from the UK though so does anyone have an email address that I need to contact? I might wait to contact them though because I want to get the 3D release too.

Gus, Disney will replace the 2D Blu-Ray and the DVD in whatever set you pick up. It's the discs they're replacing, not the packaging or the editions. So since you have the Target 2-disc and the 3D version, when you call, just ask if they can replace both Blu-Rays and both DVDs in those sets.MickeyMouseboy wrote:Escapay I also bought the target 2 disc and the 3D version let me know if they replace both sets.

Re: The Little Mermaid: Diamond Edition - Fall 2013
I got the Target Digibook this morning and ordered the 3D/Blu-Ray/DVD/Digital/Music version also. The Digibook is very nice; reminds me of the Limited Edition version of Kingdom Hearts 1.5 case.
The restoration's gorgeous, btw. The error in POTW definitely interrupts the flow of that scene, which is a shame considering so many children will watch this for the first time and have that as their memory of the film. Is it just me though, or is Ariel's hair too black in the scene where Triton finds out she's in love with a human (and also the scene where Ariel pulls Ursula's hair during the climax)? Overall, I'm glad the colors are better, since this has always felt like one of the most colorful Disney films of all--and I'm so happy to see all the shadows and darkness present as well.
I watched the Harold feature and, for the most part, am very glad it was not included. It portrays Ursula more as a head of the mob or some such, but hearing Pat Carroll is always nice. I re-watched the deleted scenes from the previous Platinum release again, and I still like the verse about Ursula they had for "Fathoms Below." Of course, it only adds to what's already in the film, but it does emphasize the impression of Ursula almost as more than just one woman, but a "monster lurking in the deep." And the line about her dreaming of when "she would return once more--return to rule the ocean floor"--very climactic, and would build the tension plus draw more light on Ursula's grudge against Triton.
Anyway, I'm not sure about this, but I wondered if I saw a change in the film. I haven't been able to check the Platinum or VHS, so I'm not sure, but: the scene just before "Kiss the Girl" where Ariel nearly drives the coach over a cliff--I always thought the scene ended with Eric sneaking his arm around Ariel's shoulders, but he just puts them behind his head here. I can't remember if that's how it went before, and it would seem like such a strange thing to change, so that's probably the way it's always been. Still, Disney has made very strange changes in the past for no reason, so I just need to check.

I know. Just like some children's first memories of Cinderella will be less impressive than the film really was. I don't know how they could even let that POTW mistake slip by.Disney's Divinity wrote:The error in POTW definitely interrupts the flow of that scene, which is a shame considering so many children will watch this for the first time and have that as their memory of the film.

I don't care so much now there's a replacement, but that's just a thought that went through my mind--trying to think how somebody would see it for the first time.

Guess we should say to the parents to research on a release of your favorite film that you would want to show to children before buying so that there would be no errors. Had this not been addressed from those that had early access to this release a month or 2 ago, we probably wouldn't have told Disney in advance of this error. ... that, and even if they don't visit sites such as this, parents should see the film before showing to the kids to see if there's any error (or scenes that might be for the right age. It happens. "We gotta let the kids grow up the right way!")Disney's Divinity wrote:I don't care so much now there's a replacement, but that's just a thought that went through my mind--trying to think how somebody would see it for the first time.
It's strange that such an error like this could've been corrected as when they play the entire film for quality purposes. ... and we're talking about Disney for crying out loud! I'm glad that they're making a replacement program right away, but these things shouldn't have happened. 'Course, they're the type of errors other companies had done in the past.
This is DisneyFTW1, a former Youtube account that was terminated by Disney themselves. My current Youtube Account is FilmFTW2 (FilmFTW1 was terminated). Youtube sucks when it comes to film uploads, and it sucks even more when major corporations are following your channels. But what can I do?

I just realized today that this was a silly question, considering the DVD-only version isn't out yet.Disney's Divinity wrote:Do you know if this is part of the DVD-only version or not? If so, I might buy that just for the different cover + free Frozen ticket, but I'll skip it otherwise.disneyboy20022 wrote:At Wal-Mart on the box of the regular Combo pack there's movie money for Frozen. Not sure if that's just Wal-Mart or not.

I'm guessing nobody would know if the Frozen ticket will be included when the DVD-only version is finally out. Thinking about it, I doubt it because Disney obviously wants to encourage people to buy Blu-Ray and giving a bonus for a DVD-only product wouldn't follow with that course of action.

Yes that POTW error is very distracting since I have the Platinum DVD of TLM, but the colors of the Blu-Ray are really amazing and the dark shadowy parts of the backgrounds in some scenes are nicely done.
It's infuriating that Disney would let that kind of error slide but a replacement program is a good idea, still at least they did a great job restoring this film after Cinderella's very awkard restoration/transfer.

I just watched the Carly Rae Jepsen video....I gotta say, I don't think it's as bad as what people are saying. Of course I prefer Jodi's original version but for an updated version, this isn't too bad. At least they kept the original music and they didn't give it an awful rock or techno pop beat.

I agree. And I also think that the music video is very well done. I actually like it a lot!

Kids would not notice the POYW error. Nor would they care. Anyone who thinks otherwise, obviously does not have any kids.
I agree in that the Carly Rae Jepsen video is not nearly as bad as everyone made it out to be when they first heard the news. The people I watched it with found her voice a little too tinny, but otherwise, it was a pretty mild (a little boring) cover in that it wasn't too different from the theatrical version.
We watched the 3D release on Friday and thoroughly enjoyed it. The Disneyphiles I watched it with did not mind nor care about the 'mistakes'. We all had a wonderful times and there are scenes that are almost tailor-made for 3D.
Watched WIZARD OF OZ 3D last night and that was spectactular too. It was like watching it for the first time for both films.

When I was as young as four I was known to say "the animators were lazy" whenever I'd notice mistakes in cartoons, especially when it came to sync and cel painting errors. Not saying I'd have been scarred for life or anything over this scene swap as a child, but even though I may not have figured out the sequence was out order, I definitely would have noticed that Ariel opens her mouth to sing when she isn't supposed to.GreatGreg wrote:Kids would not notice the POYW error. But what would I know? I don't have have kids (yet) even though I've worked with them in a care setting for years. And I guess my letter to Disney about this issue was too wordy and not stern enough to be taken seriously since they're not bothering to fix the . . .
Oh, wait.

It depends on what age we're talking about. When I was 5 I thought if I could open up a manhole coverI might just run into the Ninja Turtles. The hand drawn ones. These mistakes might have slipped by me at that age. But by the time I was around 11 they would have stood out to me.

It all. Depends. On. The. Kid.Kids would not notice the POYW error. Nor would they care. Anyone who thinks otherwise, obviously does not have any kids.
Sure, the majority of kids wouldn't notice. The majority of people probably wouldn't notice. But the majority of people are unintelligent. Should we have to cater to the lowest common denominator? At all times?
I showed this scene to my little brother. He's 11. I didn't say keep your eyes peeled, see if you can spot anything. I just played it. And immediately, he saw it. "Her mouth was moving and it didn't match the words!"
I would have noticed it as a kid, too. Because I ALWAYS noticed things like that in movies. As a kid, I could NOT watch Tim Burton's Batman without getting annoyed at the scene where Jack Nicholson is revealed as The Joker because he had a splotch of purple dye on the side of his (chalk-white) neck.
Again: It all depends on the kid.

I'm glad not everyone has such a low opinion of children. From what I've noticed over the years, children are often more attuned to small details than adults are. Whether they would care or not, I doubt, but they would notice the error.enigmawing wrote:When I was as young as four I was known to say "the animators were lazy" whenever I'd notice mistakes in cartoons, especially when it came to sync and cel painting errors. Not sure why you're putting it in quotations since they are indeed mistakes, which no amount of word-twisting or corporate excuse-making can get around. Unless Disney-ruler-of-the-universe has not officially classified these as "mistakes," which must mean we lowly commoners are not allowed to call a spade a spade.GreatGreg wrote:The Disneyphiles I watched it with did not mind nor care about the 'mistakes'

Overall, I apologize to everyone else for bringing up the error (albeit casually) again, since--like I said--I no longer care now that there's a replacement for their mistakes.

I want to give a big "thank you" to members like Escapay and tlc38tlc38 for telling us what we need to know for when we call Disney Customer Service. Now I can write all of these serial numbers and things down in advance so that I can be all prepared when I call. It's a huge help. Thanks, guys!
Kudos to Disney for actually listening to their fans this time. That probably sounds like sarcasm, but considering they don't always fix things like this, I'm very grateful.
For those of you who have already received replacement discs for other Disney titles (like Pinocchio), how do they arrive? Do they just throw the new disc into an envelope and call it a day, or do they put the disc inside some kind of protective casing? With stuff that comes in the mail, I'm usually paranoid about getting scratched discs. I'd hate to get a corrected Mermaid disc only to find that it's too damaged to work in the player.

All you have to do is call them and say you are calling about the Little Mermaid replacement disc program and read off some numbers from your package and they will take your address information mail you a prepaid envelope to ship back your discs and they will send you corrected discs that are currently being pressed. The only bad news is they are not replacing the 3D discs at this time, but this is still great news that they'v reacted this fast after release when they could have pulled a Lion King and ignored complaints altogether.
