Both Tangled/Frozen trailers were released in June of their respective years "2010 & 2013" attached to an unnecessary Pixar sequel. Moana is just continuing that routine.Sotiris wrote:Well, it's about time.

Re: Moana
It would actually be pretty sweet if they attached it to the (also unnecessary) Alice in Wonderland sequel to get it out early. Better yet, if they made two trailers, a teaser for Alice and a full trailer for Finding Dory. I mean, apparently, the Moana trailer is 34 seconds shorter than the first Frozen teaser with Olaf and Sven fighting over the carrot, so it probably isn't incredibly substantial.
I mean, we still have a month to wait for the next Pixar film. It seems odd to have a completely ready cut of Moana's trailer ready only to wait for Dory's release.
Also, off-topic, but I find it amusing how Sausage Party got a PG rating for its trailer, which is the same rating as the trailer for The BFG. Never change, Canadian film rating committees. Also, I just learned that Alan Menken and Glenn Slater wrote at least one musical number together for Sausage Party. Just mentioning in case anyone was wondering what they were doing right now besides the upcoming Beauty and the Beast remake, now that Galavant has been cancelled, the Hunchback musical was denied a Broadway stage, and Disney has been reaching out to newer talent for Moana and their other upcoming animated films.

So you consider Toy Story 3, one of Pixar's most beloved and heralded works, to be unnecessary?DisneyEra wrote:Both Tangled/Frozen trailers were released in June of their respective years "2010 & 2013" attached to an unnecessary Pixar sequel. Moana is just continuing that routine.

Sorry my snarky remark, I couldn't resist.
But I'm glad we're getting a teaser for Moana soon. Sooner than those for Tangled and Frozen.

Artwork by Bill Schwab. The one where she's sitting sort of reminds me of Chel from The Road to El Dorado.

I consider ALL these triple sequels unnecessary. I don't want WDAS to follow this same path.DisneyFan09 wrote:So you consider Toy Story 3, one of Pixar's most beloved and heralded works, to be unnecessary?DisneyEra wrote:Both Tangled/Frozen trailers were released in June of their respective years "2010 & 2013" attached to an unnecessary Pixar sequel. Can somebody please tell me why I'm half-expecting Raven Symone's voice to come out of Moana's mouth?

Somewhat, yes. I can see a resemblance, despite not being identical.Sotiris wrote:The one where she's sitting sort of reminds me of Chel from The Road to El Dorado.

Re: Moana
Geez, Maui's design is so unappealing. I'll have a hard time warming up to it. Sometimes, he even looks psychotic.

So, Moana is officially set in Oceania. We went from Polynesia to an even broader region. Why does Disney have such a problem selecting a specific place? Don't they know you can still make up a fictional city/kingdom/tribe/clan in a real country?

Re: Moana
Well, at least Disney didn't depict indigenous people with their former Oceania-themed film, Rescuers Down Under (I'm excluding Nemo from this). So it's region change is welcome, due to we already having Lilo & Stitch which portrayed ethnic people from that region.Sotiris wrote:So, Moana is officially set in Oceania. Sighs. They've done it with Aladdin and Frozen, despite the latter film not directly confirming it's region. Really, why not actually confirming that it's set in Norway, when they actually went there to do research? At least Aladdin states that it's Arabian setting, despite not being specific about it.Why does Disney have such a problem selecting a specific place? Don't they know you can still make up a fictional city/kingdom/tribe/clan in a real country?
And of course Disney's made up other fictional settings within real regions, but I'm not in mood to summarize those.
Something that I've wondered about lately (which is worth to pounder about) is whether Moana will be a part of the official Princess lineup. Due to the Frozen-sisters (yes, I dare to use that term) haven't been official coronated, will Moana fill their spot?
I liked the cover, however. And the still of Moana posing smugly with the oar back of her head.

Re: Moana
I wish I could be excited about this movie, but I cannot.
Aside from looking like just another CGI animated movie, there's nothing about this that strikes me as "magical" or "amazing" as I would normally feel for Disny films. My biggest problem with it is the treatment of Eric Goldberg reduced to animated tattoos on a character? Please. This is the man who animated the Genie from Aladdin! And many other cartoon characters. Goldberg is too talented an animator to have his resources wasted on doing what is basically just special effects. This guy deserves better. Somebody get him involved on these independent animated movies!

Re: Moana
They said the same thing about Tangled/Frozen too. They called Tangled a Shrek wanna-be via it's trailers "remember the leaked trailer with not only Pink but Miley Cyrus music"? Even former Disney Animator Floyd Norman mocked Tangled's name change. And Frozen was just "Tangled with Snow", hiding Elsa, over promotion of Olaf & Anna's resemblance to Rapunzel.JTurner wrote:I wish I could be excited about this movie, but I cannot.

Re: Moana
So, I'm guessing that the trailer isn't attached to Alice after all?
It's nice that we only have three weeks until Finding Dory, but I was hyped for nothing. It's following the same pattern as every other recent animated November release from Disney. If a marketing tactic ain't broke, don't fix it, I guess, but I was hoping that Zootopia would spark a trend of Disney attempting to advertise their animated films over longer periods of time.
Illumination's Sing already has two trailers and that's being released a month after Moana, and Dreamwork's Trolls already has a chart-topping hit song under its belt. Even so, I wouldn't be surprised if Disney thinks that their name attached to an animated film is enough for people to flock to the theatre (although, honestly, it probably is at this point. Still, you could say the same for Pixar, but look at how poorly The Good Dinosaur did a few months after all the hype surrounding Inside Out...

Re: Moana
Like I said before: Moana's trailer will debut in June just like Tangled/Frozen. Here's Tangled's trailer 1, dated june 10, 2010Tangled wrote:So, I'm guessing that the trailer isn't attached to Alice after all?

And here's Frozen's Olaf trailer, dated June 18, 2013
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-WdC4DaYIeQ
Moana will follow this same pattern. It's 2nd trailer will drop in late September to commence the "2 month marketing blitz" Toys, Books, Cloths, ect will start to release in October. As for Zootopia's June 2015 teaser, that was because WDAS sat out all of 2015, so they must of had work for Zoo ready to show. Also, they had a D23 Expo last August, which can reveal a lot of new WDAS material to the public. You will see this with Gigantic around this time next year. No WDAS film in 2017, so Gigantic teaser in June with Cars 3, also another D23 Expo, but it will happen in July instead of August because Disney wants to beat San Diego's Comic Con to the punch. Lots of Gigantic stuff should be revealed, as well as info on Frozen 2. Then in late November, a full trailer for Gigantic will drop, similar to Zootopia's Sloth trailer. That trailer will play in front of Star Wars 8 as Zoo's sloth trailer did for Star Wars 7. After the success of Tangled, you just can't question WDAS marketing tactics because they clearly have worked for nearly a decade.
