At least Kristin Chenoweth is playing Maleficent as...you know...evil. Not whatever Angelina Jolie was doing.

But Angelina DID play Maleficent as evil. Even if she was only evil for, what, five minutes?

But, Jolie still got her mannerisms down: The looks, face expressions, the vocal projections and styles, the grace and posture. If you visioned Maleficent in real life, this is who you would get.

While Kristin's Maleficent is evil, the casting director seriously thought a high-pitched (didn't changed her voice), bubbly woman, known for comedic and cutesy roles, is perfect for the Mistress of All Evil? I mean, listen to Kristin's Maleficent's evil laugh here and compare it to the original Maleficent and AJ:

And that was easily the best scene in the movie. And then it quickly turns into Jolie and Woolverton's weird fan-fiction.

I mean, Descendants looks like fan-fiction, too. But, at least the classic Disney villains remain villains (unless we get a third act resolution where they decide to change their ways, but hopefully not).

The movie premieres on July 31, and the DVD and the soundtrack come out the same day!

Sons And Daughters Of Disney’s Most Infamous Villains Star In Disney’s “Descendants,” Premiering Friday, July 31

A MODERN-DAY COMING-OF-AGE ADVENTURE ABOUT THE TEENAGE SONS AND DAUGHTERS OF DISNEY’S MOST INFAMOUS VILLAINS UNFOLDS IN DISNEY’S “DESCENDANTS,” PREMIERING FRIDAY, JULY 31 ON DISNEY CHANNEL

Kenny Ortega Directs, Choreographs and Executive-Produces the Live-Action, Music-Filled, Dragon-Sized Adventure

Soundtrack and DVD Available July 31

Dove Cameron, Cameron Boyce, Booboo Stewart and Sofia Carson star as the teenage sons and daughters of Disney’s most infamous villains, in Disney’s “Descendants,” a live-action moviethat – with a knowing wink at traditional fairy tales – fuses castles with classrooms to create a contemporary, music-driven story about the challenges in living up to parental and peer expectations. Made for kids, tweens and families, the movie premieres FRIDAY, JULY 31 (8:00 p.m., ET/PT) on Disney Channel and Friday, July 24 to verified users on the WATCH Disney Channel app and WATCHDisneyChannel.com. The notable cast also includes Mitchell Hope, Wendy Raquel Robinson, Maz Jobrani, Kathy Najimy and the Tony Award-winning Kristin Chenoweth.

Disney’s “Descendants” will also usher in Disney Channel’s new comedy series “BUNK’D,” premiering immediately after the movie.

Emmy Award-winning Kenny Ortega (“High School Musical”) directs, choreographs and executive-produces Disney’s “Descendants.” Wendy Japhet (“An Education,” “The Italian Job”) is also an executive producer. Paul Becker (“So You Think You Can Dance Canada”) is the co-choreographer. The script was written by Josann McGibbon and Sara Parriott (creators and Emmy and WGA Award-nominated writers on “The Starter Wife”; writers of “Runaway Bride”), who are also co-producers. Mark Hofeling (“Teen Beach Movie,” “High School Musical”) is the production designer and Kara Saun (“Project Runway”) is the costume designer.

The story, set in the idyllic kingdom of Auradon, playfully presents the unexpected possibilities of what happens after the “happily ever after.” As it unfolds, Ben, the benevolent teenage son of the King and Queen (Beast and Belle from “Beauty and the Beast”), is poised to take the throne. His first proclamation is to offer a chance at redemption to Mal, Evie, Carlos and Jay, the trouble-making offspring of Maleficent, the Evil Queen, Cruella de Vil and Jafar, who have all been sequestered on the forbidden Isle of the Lost for 20 years. These villainous descendants are allowed into Auradon for the first time to attend prep school alongside the teenage progeny of Fairy Godmother, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty and Mulan. Only time will tell if these evil teens follow in the footsteps of their wicked parents.

As these sons and daughters of evil meet the children of goodness, their story incorporates empowering themes about self-confidence, finding the beauty within, freedom of choice, personal responsibility, teamwork, justice and empathy.

When this was announced I was actually looking forward to it. The concept of the children of the classic heroes and villains and what happens after "happily ever after" holds so much potential. With everything that was announced after that I grew more and more apprehensive. I knew it was a Disney Channel movie so certain things were to be expected but every new reveal just kept getting worse.

I think this is the final nail in the coffin. That has to be the worst version of Be Our Guest I've ever heard. The original is a classic, what I just heard definitely wasn't.

Yeah, I definitely stopped listening to that atrocity about five seconds in. Who thought this was a good idea again?

I love how they said that they're going treat Disney with respect with this movie. Yeah, how is the horrible casting, possibly cliche writing, RUINING the characters and their legacies, and making a beloved classic a RAP song, treating Walt Disney and his works, along now with the late Howard Ashman like terrible, lazy cash cows with respect?

You can now watch the actual clip where they sing "Be Our Guest" which somehow makes it even worse.

If you listen carefully, you hear Walt Disney & Howard Ashman, rolling in their graves. This just shows how much Disney Co truly cares about Walt Disney’s legacy. PATHETIC! I’m despising the company more and more. Seriously. This is what you call "treating the sources with respect?"

I liked the clip. Made the song better instead of worse, for me. But is it respectful to the original? Well, the entire story, no, the entire project would be, were it not that we could view this as an alternate take on the characters, not how they truly are, and that's how I'll view this mess.
