This movie is getting some really good buzz, mainly for Emma Thompson's performance and the Mary Poppins nostalgia.

That's what I'm looking forward to. Definitely NOT Walt Disney as told by The Disney Company through another hammy Tom Hanks performance

2/3 of these, i agree with, but even these days I've yet to see Hanks ham it up.

Actually, I went to a screening of Mr.Banks a week ago. I'm surprised how much I liked it, I wasn't sure what to expect.

The film is a great mix of comedy and drama. I laughed A LOT (as did the entire theater), and I admit I shed a tear or two. It helps to have seen Mary Poppins before, since the film is FILLED with references. Emma THompson is GREAT in it. And I admit I wasnt sure if Tom Hanks was the right guy for the part, but he really did a great job.
The flashback to PL Travers' childhood were a little excessive in my opinion (but surprising: her father is NOT a stern guy who softens up over the arrival of a nanny like we all suspect), but other than that, I just think it was a great movie. VERY unusual...

I just got back from an advanced screening. Got a nice surprise this morning when I logged onto Facebook and a friend had six tickets she couldn't use (which I was more than happy to take off her hands

The film was excellent (though to enjoy it, you need to be pretty familiar with the Mary Poppins film). It also takes a bit to get used to Tom Hanks as Walt Disney, but he really does an amazing job. And Emma Thompson is great too

The tone of the movie reminded me a bit of Julie and Julia . . . But I enjoyed it much more that that film. I even thought Colin Farrell did a great job and normally I don't care for him at all.

Wow, just saw this last night, and it was just lovely.

A truly wonderful and interesting story, one that I'm ashamed to say I knew nothing about really ! Emma & Tom were superb, as was pretty much everyone in the cast. And it isn't a sugar-coated portrayal of Walt at all, he is very human and very much a businessman.

If you want to watch a film and feel uplifted and experience a few life - affirming moments, go and see this.

Saw "Saving Mr. Banks" and being a massive (classic and current) Disney fan, I absolutely loved it. Hit all of the right, emotional notes. It's really PL Travers' story and you absolutely get the sense why she was so protective of Mary Poppins. Emma Thompson is fantastic. The scenes in Australia are wonderful, truly delving into why and who she is and her relationship with her father. It never gets too syrupy. Tom Hanks is perfect as Walt Disney. He absolutely gets him down and I forgot I was watching an actor playing him. He is that good. The screenplay never sugarcoats Walt Disney. It really shows his stubborn side and his persistence in getting what he wanted. Jason Schwartzman and BJ Novak are absolutely delightful as the Sherman Bros and Paul Giamatti has a nice role as Travers' cheery driver. Most importantly, it follows the Disney rule of "for every laugh, there should be a tear." The ending and other assorted scenes really got to me. I also have to give props for Thomas Newman's magnificent score, which nicely compliment the classic Sherman Brothers songs. In the end, "Saving Mr Banks" is about why authors feel so strongly about their stories and why the adaptation process can be so difficult.

FYI, Mark Henn animated the bit with Tinker Bell you see in the trailer. And Diane Disney Miller gets a nice dedication in the end credits.

Saw the film today because it opened here in New York. It's very nice. I'm still not completely onboard with Tom Hanks as Walt, but he does have a few very nice moments here and there. Emma Thompson is just fantastic. There's a lot a great elements to this film, and I laughed and cried quite a bit. The scene where the creative team introduced "Let's Go Fly a Kite" to Mrs. Travers really got to me. Tears were rolling down my cheek like crazy. Overall, it's a great film!

Never mind that most of these tumblr losers probably never heard of Travers before in their lives, but I love how is it that they get angry that she's misrepresented. No Disney fan seems to give a shit about Walt.

Well my local AMC Theater isn't going to get it this weekend, but hopefully the following weekend. I'm a bit bummed out about this, however if it isn't there by the beginning of January I'll be traveling out of town to see it.

Unless you technically count the Touchstone and Miramax releases. But, in terms of pure Disney, I think the only performances to win Oscars were Julie Andrews, James Baskett, Hayley Mills and Bobby Driscoll.*

*Note: Baskett's was an Honorary Oscar, due to Walt Disney's unsuccessful campaign to get him a nomination for Song of the South. You don't see that anymore. Hayley Mills and Bobby Driscoll won Juvenile Oscars (something else you don't see anymore).

Blimey ! I had a feeling Mary Poppins was the last time, but it is really is incredible it was that long ago ! Hayley Mills was truly deserved as well, I know it's a Juvenile Oscar but I'm glad she was recognised. Heck, if it's good enough for Judy Garland!

I think Johnny Depp should have won for Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl for sure, his performance it so iconic in it, and so brilliant.

It would be marvellous if Emma did win for PL Travers …. would it be the first time in Acadamy history that an award has been one for someone playing the creator, and someone playing the creation ?

Well now I'm just plain frustrated with Disney a bit.

I talked to a guy who is one of the higher ups at the local AMC Theater and he said that Disney rejected them getting Saving Mr. Banks on the basis that they had too many Disney movies

For obvious reasons though I'll be going to a theater in another town sometime next week.
