Yeah, as much as I think that Sleeping Beauty is a rather overrated movie to me, I still think there's some things in it that are better than Maleficent. The animation, art direction and music is still the superior elements that Maleficent hasn't taken away but I would rather have the character development and audacity which Maleficent strives for. I think Maleficent is an okay villain to me, why? I perfer the Disney villians who are the realistic ones, Lady Tremaine, Hans, Gaston, and most of all, Frollo are better villains than Maleficent is.

But calling Maleficent a better movie than Sleeping Beauty is just ignoring the really good elements the animated film had, and it's sort of annoying. Besides, Maleficent and Sleeping Beauty are VASTLY DIFFERENT movies to each other, there is no comparison anyway.
This is pretty much exactly what I've been seeing, and it's gotten to the point where I don't even to watch the movie because of that.

Did you mean "saying" instead of seeing? And I would watch the movie anyway, because it doesn't matter what other people think. We all know it's really not better than Sleeping Beauty.

Exactly, Maleficent is a movie that wants to take it's own spin or, in my view, taking a mad happy sledgehammer to the Sleeping Beauty story that's different than the 1959 animated film.

For what it was, I really liked it! :D

You know second time around I thought Anjelina's acting was even better. A whole great performance.

Angelina Jolie is the only one who could ever play Maleficent, and wow did she blow me away! The scene where she talks to Aurora after Phillip and the pixies leave is some of Jolie's best acting in her whole career and Linda Woolverton's writing in it was tear jerkingly good.

I caved and saw it and it was even worse than I expected, but thankfully it was short enough to not get boring.

The entire opening scene was just dreadful and way too long. I kept waiting for Angelina Jolie to show up and salvage the film, as much as it could possibly be salvaged, but it took forever. All of that exposition could have been trimmed down to about 5 minutes and the rest of the time could have been used for better scenes with adult Maleficent. I agree that Angelina shined the most in her "evil" scenes, but I couldn't really buy the weepy mother angle. Showing how she was driven to evil would have been better than her being good all along except for one fleeting moment in which she cast an evil spell, which she ultimately regretted and tried to reverse

I liked Elle Fanning more as Aurora than I expected. The fairies were self-centered bitches and terribly unfunny for comic relief characters. Prince Phillip was such a waste

I was starting to get in to the movie during the final battle scene and then it just ended all of a sudden. It would have been better to see more of Maleficent's powers in that scene, and have her tow the line of evil again while battling everything around her. I was a little annoyed that the crow/dragon didn't die too. That would have added some drama.

It was a decent idea and could have been really fun, but it was executed horribly. If not for Angelina's performance, it'd be devoid of any redeeming qualities

Unrelated, but the audience I was with LOVED the Big Hero 6 teaser. Disney animation is in a much better place than live action films right now.

No, it's the only thing I've been seeing from people who have seen the movie. Everywhere I go, I see people talking about how great of a movie it was, and how it was better than the original because the original was supposedly sexist...

I saw it again last night with my dad, an old friend of mine, and his dad and we all agreed that it was better than Godzilla. :P With that said, my opinion still stands that it was a really good movie on it's own terms and seeing it the second time made me appreciate the little details (like the fire sparks around the throne room during the final fight is a nice visual touch).

I don't know if it's just me, but I think that Sharlto Copley did a very nice job playing King Stefan's insane side and while he was paranoid hasty when Aurora returned, he aknowledged that she reminded him of is wife in a semi happy way.

Aw, that is terrible. But in the end, Sleeping Beauty is the film that will shine out.

Slightly OT: Check this out since I was talking quite a bit about Linda Woolverton.

This does explain why the three faries are the female versions of The Three Stooges in Maleficent. :P

from boxofficeguru.com:

Disney's Maleficent fell 44% in its third go around to an estimated $19M, bringing its cume to $163M. It is the second highest live-action film for Angelina Jolie and should easily pass 2005's Mr. and Mrs. Smith in the next couple of weeks.

It's definitely had the among the best legs of all the summer blockbusters. Domestically, there's an outside chance it could be the second highest (or even the highest depending on its legs) film of the summer, it seems it will easily pass Spider-Man and Godzilla. The only one that will likely stay ahead of it is X-Men. This also depends on how Transformers does. Frankly it's kind of astonishing that Maleficent is having this much staying power and will finish above those films. It has an "A" cinema score and must be getting great word-of-mouth among the general audience.
