Using my Best Buy Reward Zone card and STILL getting a point for every penny I spend, I picked up the "The Little Mermaid" Special Deluxe Edition with the Four Disney Pins and a regular copy of TLM and got both of the plushies of Flounder and Sebastian. Watched the movie immediately when I got home and was impressed with the new transfer. It is brilliant and on my Blu-Ray DVD Player it upconverts to a beautiful almost-hi-def picture that looks like you can reach in and grab Flounder and all the characters. What a great way to watch TLM. Have only watched "Little Match Girl" and the lame music video by Ashley (No talent) Tisdale. What is with that? Gonna watch the rest of the extras tonight after the ball game. Looking forward to the "Making of" Documentary, I scanned through it and it looks very interesting.

The only way to watch movies - Original Aspect Ratio!!!!
I LOVE my Blu-Ray Disc Player!

I am also really psyched to watch "Little Match Girl" (Disney animation I've never seen, woohoo!) and ride the virtual ride! I hear they are going to build some kind of Little Mermaid attraction at WDW, so maybe the ride will happen after all! Anyways, I bought my DVD at Best Buy today, and I got the free Sebastian plush! They made the bags under his eyes in a funny way though, ha. I have a lot of Sebastian stuff and still no plush Flounder (except the old McDonald's ornament), but when they're small I always opt for Sebastian because they're sort of life-size (since Sebastian IS small like that). Someday, I'll get a big plush Flounder.
Oh, and on the way out of Best Buy, they had gumball machines of Care Bears figures! I had to get one! They were fifty cents. I got Cheer Bear! Though, I was hoping for one I didn't have in another form (got the old Cheer Bear action figure from the 80s), but it is still really cool. Would love to get Good Luck Bear though. Also noticed that they do have the Galaxy High DVDs at Best Buy after all (in the Anime section!), for 6.99 too! But they only had the second volume, and I'm broke now anyway. I want to get them though!

IGN gave this set a perfect 10.

I'm very satisfied with this release. Could there have been more? Sure, but this is a case of quality over quantity. The documentary was very honest about the conditions at the studio. My only gripe about it is that they focused so much on the era the film was created in that there wasn't a lot about the creation of the film itself. The deleted scenes were interesting, and in a way, they doubled as flat-out storyboard sequences because many shots and lines found in the film were in storyboard form here. The Little Match Girl short was beautifully depressing, though not as depressing as I feared it would be. I'm annoyed that 3/4 of the bonus material was created in widescreen (and obviously from a high-definition master) yet were not anamorphic. My widescreen TV was a little zealous with the overscan and names and foreheads were slightly cut off when I cropped the black bars. The Virtual Ride was freaking cool and it angers me even more that this idea was shelved (it kind of peeved me that no one in the featurette said WHY this was abandoned). After viewing the film on my 64-inch display, I can't help but feel that many DVD reviewers out there are anal, plain and simple. The film looked marvelous, even better than the screencaps we've been getting. There was a thin level of film grain, but to my amazement, it never bothered me. It actually gave the film a very smooth, velvety look that benefitted the underwater scenes especially. I haven't listened to the commentary, yet, but I know it'll be a treat. Here's how I rank this DVD-wise amongst the other Platinums:
1. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
2. Aladdin
3. Beauty and the Beast
4. The Little Mermaid
5. Cinderella
6. Bambi
7. The Lion King
8. Lady and the Tramp
Overall, this is an excellent release, and while it could've used a few more featurettes, it's still one of the better 2-disc sets Disney's come out with in a while.

IIRC, it was set to be built near Videopolis in Disneyland, then they decided to pair it up with a Beauty and the Beast attraction in Disneyland Paris. The BATB attraction was to have been a Tiki Room-inspired show set to "Be Our Guest", with a live-action Belle joining an animatronic Beast. However, both were shelved to add Space Mountain to that park.Disneykid wrote:The Virtual Ride was freaking cool and it angers me even more that this idea was shelved (it kind of peeved me that no one in the featurette said WHY this was abandoned).
Amen. Luke's was the only one I've read so far where he acknowledges that the restoration is different, but doesn't bitch about it.Disneykid wrote:After viewing the film on my 64-inch display, I can't help but feel that many DVD reviewers out there are anal, plain and simple.
I thought you were going to pick it up during your break at work?nachonaco wrote:I go to bed in 2 hours and my stupid mom forgot to pick this up.![]()
TWICE!
LOL, me too. Gotta say, I got the strangest look from the cashier when he saw that I had X-Men 3 and TLM. Talk about polar opposites!jeremy88 wrote:

Picked up my copy earlier today and the restoration is pretty nice. I think you can still see the priest's "knee" in the Hans Christian Anderson featurette on disc 2. I am disappointed with the slipcover (no opening like a book!) and the disc art (have to handle it carefully to avoid fingerprints).
Just curious, is the Disney Insider usually a good indication of how the next Platinum cover is going to look? I remember Lady and the Tramp having the same Ariel cover art... This one has Peter Pan and he looks way off in my opinion.

So I got my copy (a long with my Sebastian plush) at Best Buy. I watched it as soon as I got home and LOVED every second of it, especially with it's fantastic transfer! I give the folks at Disney an A+ for the restoration, it was awesome!
I haven't watched any of the bonus features yet, but I plan on doing that tonight (thankfully I have no homework). Can't wait!
EDIT: Also, that slipcover is awesome! I'm normally not a slipcover collector because I like all my spines to match, but I'm so tempted to keep this one on rather than place it on the stack of shiny cardboard that I have shoved in the corner of my closet.

Was reading the first page and found this little beauty. Isn't it ironic that the one feature we expected doesn't show up at all? Perhaps the *only* reason the LI is better than the Platinum, it has full color character artwork as opposed to the transparent and reflective pieces of sh!te.Lucylover1986 wrote:And even if there's no bonus features we always have the one carried over from the Limited Edition, “full-color character artwork on discs"!

Yea, I forgot that they stopped the full color discs. The DVD set is so good though that if the DVDs were blank I don't think I'd care.Escapay wrote:Was reading the first page and found this little beauty. Agreed. I've only had my copy for a day and have been very careful with it. Despite that fact, both discs are already covered with fingerprints on their front sides. I know this is supposed to be a way to throw off bootleggers, but wasn't the other way (printing full color artwork directly on the disc ala Lady and the Tramp and Dumbo) supposed to handle that? I'd much rather have full color arwork, even if it is transluscent. These artless discs feel like cheap knock offs.Escapay wrote:Was reading the first page and found this little beauty. After reading the previous reviews I was apprehensive but I got my copy today at Circuit City & came home & watched it from cover to cover. Then I read Luke's review & I have to agree with Luke that this is a fantastic presentation. I watched it on a Samsung 52" dlp & didn't see any of the flaws others have seen. I'm sure they saw it but I am 100% satisfied with this awesome Platinum Edition.
