Finally, I saw it!

And I've got to say; I liked it! I love it more than the first film. I'm somewhat upset that I saw reviews before seeing the movie that claimed it was messy. It wasn't messy, as Doug and Rob Walker claimed. If there were problems, it wasn't "they had 45 minutes of the main plot with a bunch of Kristoff and Olaf filler." I just thought the 2nd act was slow while the 3rd act was speedy Gonzales of everything happening. Yeah, Kristoff turns into Bryan Adams for one musical number, but that's just camp I can enjoy with popcorn.

What I loved about the film-
Animation- far more atmospheric, with dimension and dynamic space, detailed. The scene of Elsa riding the Nokk on the dark sea after she tamed it, it's pure beauty.

Idina Menzel's vocals - more dynamic and healthy-sounding. I loved the "Show Yourself" sequence.

Characters- I didn't feel that the main characters were off. A lot of the criticism is directed towards how Elsa retreats into her introverted ways, but I didn't see that. I saw that Elsa was ready for change while Anna wanted safety and security. Someone can be both extroverted yet stagnant, afraid of risks or vice-versa. It makes sense that Elsa is driven by power and perfectionism, while Anna is driven by emotional security and comfort.

The newer character could've had more screen time. I liked how Ryder bonded with Kristoff.

Subtext instead of paratext- While "Let it Go" was appreciated by LGBT fans as a catharsis song, it was only one part of the movie. Frozen 2 had a lot more instances of power and injustices, personally affecting a variety of characters.

But it's the "subtext" part that leads to the script's core problems. This movie had some heavy stuff. Though the reveal of Elsa and Anna's grandfather of basically plotting genocide was rushed in the third act. It was rushed, not forced. It was very believable, sincere and inspired by real events, but rushed. There is no way you could feature intense violence visually in Agmar's flashbacks. There was also no way you show the complex conflict of the Northuldra and Arendellians when the only Arendellians there were a group of soldiers. So ALL the exposition had to come out in the 2nd act. All these particular creative choices were made because Disney has a legacy to protect, that it cannot make the same mistakes something like Hunchback with Frollo groping Esmeralda. Lee and Buck had a beautiful story here, but they are not Miyazaki, who can create several animated films about war violence without corporate strongholds.

Though this sequel is not as good as Toy Story 2 or Shrek 2, it's still an improvement in some areas than the original. Again, I'm a different kind of film enthusiast being into more nuanced animation films and independent films.

She later meets Hans who would have lied about his past encounter with Anna and Elsa to gain her sympathy, all as an act of revenge.
You know what? That sounds exactly like a storyline that Disney would come up With a cheapquel during the 90's or even the early 2000's.

Yes! Actually, it was Chris Buck (director) and Peter Del Vecho (producer). They introduced the movie along with Olaf's Brazilian voice actor to an absolute thrilled audience (and all of us slept on the line to get inside), then we saw the movie (the claps after Into the Unknown were CHILLING) and they had a little chat after. I might do a little highlights of their talk after. We also got a presentation from Onward's Dan Scanlon (he showed us a good 15 minutes of the movie) and Bluesky's Spies in Disguise (and another one with Kevin Feige and the cast of Rise of Skywalker along with J.J. Abrams, but they were the most uninteresting lol)

The Digital Bits has a possible street date for Frozen II on physical formats.

Source: https://thedigitalbits.com/columns/my-t ... 21119-1630
Finally today, lots of you have been waiting on word of the final batch of Pixar 4K films from Walt Disney Studios. Sources now suggest that they’re lining up to street day and date with Disney’s Frozen 2 on Blu-ray and 4K. That street date looks to be 2/11/2020 (or close to it). So that’s likely when you can expect A Bug’s Life, Up, WALL-E, Monsters, Inc., and Monsters University on physical 4K, which will complete the Pixar catalog on Ultra HD.

Isn't February super early? I don't think that's the norm for Disney's fall releases.

Based on the Australian site, the release date for everything (Beauty and the Beast, Pixar, Frozen II) is March 3rd.
I guess we'll just have to wait and see...

Sorry for being snippy, JGF. I have, however, found that when the sources used by The Digital Bits aren't accurate, they are pretty darn close.

That's all right. :) Frankly even the other predicted date of early March that Farerb posted seems a tad bit early in my eyes because Disney tends to release these films more mid-late March. I don't remember what they did last year with WIR2 though because I had no interest in that film.

Ralph Breaks the Internet was released February 26th along with the 4K of The Little Mermaid.

Oh wow, that's super early. In which case, early March, especially a date that coincides with the 4K release of BATB, makes sense. I shouldn't be surprised that WIR2 was released so early because Disney must have realized it wouldn't have a very long life in theaters, unlike the original Frozen for example.

I finally saw the movie yesterday and to be honest, I thought it was just meh. It was better than it's predecessor, since it wasn't as awfully tonally inconsistent and flawed as it's forerunner. Yet aside from a couple of sequences, it never became as something special. Frankly, the film felt too brisk and rushed, especially in the first act before the big journey. I think the movie could've benefited of not rushing through the first act.
Otherwise, I agree that Kristoff's ballad Lost in the Woods was the most jarring scene. It really felt misplaced and it's staging didn't jelled with the rest of the movie. Otherwise, I didn't found Olaf as annoying as several people thought he was. I liked that Elsa was given more screentime, but it would've benefited more in the predecessor. In the first movie, she was after all facing a huge struggle, so thus she deserved more screentime. Whereas in this movie she's just plain dull and boring. But Show Yourself was still the best sequence and was the true showstopper of the movie. But I guess Disney haven't promoted it, since it's a turning point in a story and full of spoilers.
Otherwise, the visuals were nice. As for the story, I didn't found it as complicated as many people thought it was. But of all the new characters, Bruni was the most adorable, but also the most useless. Besides being one of the spirits, he didn't have much to do, nonetheless. The Northuldra weren't given enough screentime, despite that I like the inclusion of Saami people in this Norwegian premise. As for Anna becoming the Queen, I could see a slight growth in her, but due to her adorkability, it's still contradictory to picture her as a regal Queen.

Otherwise, I may sound completely lukewarm to Frozen II, cause I didn't thought it was completely awful. It was just like the rest of the Princess movies of this Revival era: Meh. Now we'll have to wait for Raya and the Last Dragon and hope that it will turn out good.

Apparently Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is being rumored to be released on Blu-Ray during the first week or so of April so early March for Frozen II's release sounds even more likely now.

Yes, I feel the real reason Disney doesn't promote "Show Yourself" is because it is spoilery.

I've seen the film again, and I think I'm liking it more and more. The sense of adventure is thrilling, and Show Yourself is just spectacular to see. Especially the emotions! Elsa's final cry is overwhelming.

I also saw it again this weekend! The first time I went to a morning viewing so there were a lot of kids, this time I went in the evening with almost only adults watching. I noticed the adults responded a lot more to 'Lost in the woods' than the kids did (which I get, I don't think kids will get all the references like the Queen pose and all). The difference between the responses was just really big, at the morning viewing it was really silent during the song and it felt off, while during the evening viewing a lot of people laughed and it was more like a comical break.

But I still loved the movie watching it for a second time. Especially 'Show Yourself', still my favourite sequence!
