Sister Act is in the hit/miss category for me. Love Never Dies IS awful though. And with the exception of "I Want the Good Times Back" most of the new Mermaid songs are kinda meh... Menken is in top form, I mean "Her Voice" is hauntingly beautiful, but the lyrics are so plain and uninspired.Poody wrote:You really think Sister Act is awful? I thought some of those lyrics were amazing and hilarious....PatrickvD wrote: The additional Mermaid songs, Sister Act and... that Phantom sequel are awful.

Tangled
Alan Menken, didn't he say time and again that Glenn Slater was the person he worked with he felt was closest to Howard Ashman in, I suppose, lyrics and bond?
I think they are saying the song sung in the tavern with the thugs is like the song "Gaston" sung in a tavern with macho men.bradk wrote:was that the songs *occasionally* rise to the level of 'A Whole New World' and 'Gaston.' Now while I do disagree with this statement, I find it odd that Gaston was chosen from all of the songs in Beauty and the Beast, which is arguably one of the best Disney soundtracks of all time. While Gaston is fabulous and a real credit to Ashman's writing skills, I'm not sure it's what you want your anthem to be when you have songs like Belle and the title song which are far more epic.

You should hear the songs from "Love Never Dies" before Slater was brought on! The title song was called "The Heart is Slow to Learn"..... it's horrible.PatrickvD wrote: Sister Act is in the hit/miss category for me. Love Never Dies IS awful though. I actually like the songs from "Love Never Dies," it's just the story plot is TERRIBLE.Poody wrote:You should hear the songs from "Love Never Dies" before Slater was brought on! Sorry, I disagree. "The Heart is Slow to Learn" was laced with more depth and sadness. the "Love Never Dies" lyric sound like a freaking hallmark card.Poody wrote:You should hear the songs from "Love Never Dies" before Slater was brought on! I haven't heard or remember all the Love Never Dies songs but I do have "The Heart is Slow to Learn" on a CD that came way before Love Never Dies and I LOVE "The Heart is Slow to Learn".DancingCrab wrote:Sorry, I disagree. I'm afraid you're right and those are pretty much my sentiments exactly. Comparing musical numbers by everything BUT the music (*ahem* lyrics) doesn't really work for me to be blunt. But if the fact that it's a bunch of burly men singing in a bar that makes for a great Disney movie alone, I concede.Disney Duster wrote:I think they are saying the song sung in the tavern with the thugs is like the song "Gaston" sung in a tavern with macho men.bradk wrote:was that the songs *occasionally* rise to the level of 'A Whole New World' and 'Gaston.'
I'm sorry I'm in the extreme minority* for those that have seen the movie but while I think it's a really good -- and occasionally great -- movie, the songs just hold it back from being something better. And it appears that most that are familiar with Slater's work here may agree just based on his previous work (which by the way I did not know of until after I had critiqued the songs). Of course it's still all subjective.
Evidently Lasseter loves the stuff because when I ran into him at a Princess and the Frog event, he told me I would love what Menken/Slater were doing for then-Rapunzel. Maybe it all changed since then, or maybe I just don't have an ear for Slater.
* although it seems to me that most who have commented on the film tend to neglect mentioning the music, as does Disney itself as I've previously noted.
